Q: Calming the queasies?

Posted Wednesday, March 14, 2007 9:32 PM

Q: “Morning” sickness is a lie -- I feel nauseous all day! Any tips on soothing it?

A: Unfortunately, there’s no magic pill for curing that horrible, about-to-barf-any-second sensation. But, forcing yourself to eat something will help, even if it’s the last thing you want to do. An empty stomach only increases nausea. (And, of course, you and baby need nutrients.) Try to eat frequent small meals throughout the day, focusing on stomach-friendly foods like starchy carbs, yogurt and fruit and avoiding greasy and spicy foods. (Or, just eat whatever you think you can keep down.) Prevent dehydration (another nausea trigger) by sipping small amounts of water throughout the day and eating hydrating foods like fruit and popsicles. You can also try Sea-Bands, which are oh-so-stylish stretchy wrist bands proven to reduce nausea by stimulating acupressure points. (They’re available at most drugstores.) Finally, if you’re spending a good part of the day over the toilet or simply can’t stomach the thought of waiting until your second trimester to feel better, ask your doctor about over-the-counter or prescription medications that might help.

Get Preggie Pops, they're the only thing that got me through work some days.

re: Q: Calming The Queasies?

Sucking on hard candy (like the above-mentioned Pops) can help alot, but for my first pregnancy the only thing that would calm my tummy was those red-and-white swirly peppermint candies.  Peppermint tea is good, too, especially after meals.  But this time around even that doesn't seem to be enough to save me!

re: Q: Calming The Queasies?

I found that carrying a bottle of caffeine-free gingerale with me to work to be most helpful.  The ginger settles the stomach, and the bubbles release the gas that is lying in your empty stomach.  I used preggy pops for a while, and they were great, but they suddenly weren't enough.  So I went back to what used to work for me as a kid, whenever I had an upset stomach - gingerale.  It's a lifesaver!

carbonated water is helping me and BONUS--I'm drinking WATER. The So Clear brand from walmart is great. And cheaper than bottled water. I like the mandarin orange the best.

re: Q: Calming The Queasies?

I eat the same breakfast every morning (cheerios and a glass of milk) and then have saltines and water on the commute to work.  Then I have more saltines.  I have a mid-morning snack (usually yogurt or cottage cheese), and then eat plain grilled or backed chicken breast for lunch.  By 2pm I no longer feel queasy.  I find sour candy like the preggy pops or a sour apple jolly rancher to be good, and I also like lemonade.  Sometimes I drink gingerale too.

re: Q: Calming The Queasies?

I have been drinking Ginger Beer~ No, it's not alcoholic, haha. It's basically really strong gingerale, they sell it at Trader Joe's. Also, Lemon Ginger herbal tea has been great :)

Does anyone know where to find the preggy pops?

re: Q: Calming the queasies?

I was so sick and dehydrated that I was put into the hospital at 10 weeks with Hypermesis Gravdirum They recommended not to eat eggs, spicy foods, or dairy products. Eat small frequent meals, not letting my stomach get empty. I did all that and with the help of Zofran I started to get better, it does take time! Hang in there! The 2nd Trimester is better!

re: Q: Calming the queasies?

Peppermint tea is my new best friend. I drink it in the morning when i wake up and at night before i go to bed. It helps me feel "normal". I dont feel quite as quizzy and it helps me sleep better too!

re: Q: Calming the queasies?

Diclectin at night has become my best friend, but only works 5/7 days.

usually, as soon as i wake up, i go for a glass of water. it makes it come up easier and quicker, if it does at all.

people say keep crackers at the bedside table, but they come up anyway, grosser and clumpier than ever, IMO. no crackers for me.

however, when i'm not at home, i keep like, 3 boxes of original tic tacs or tons of peppermints in my bag. :D
