Q: Yoga okay 7 weeks?

Posted Tuesday, August 28, 2007 1:55 PM

Q: Is it safe to do yoga? I'm about 7 weeks pregnant but in October of 2006 I miscarried around 9 weeks. I just want to play everything on the safe side. --MissMoochie

Dr. Ashley Roman: In general, it is safe to do yoga during pregnancy. It is important to stay well-hydrated and avoid Bikram yoga or yoga performed at hot temperatures. If you had a first trimester miscarriage in a prior pregnancy and have had no problems with your current pregnancy such as vaginal bleeding or spotting, yoga should still be OK. But, if you are concerned or anxious about exercising given your history, I would suggest waiting until the second trimester before starting or resuming yoga.

working out ok still?

I just found out that I'm pregnant- I guess I'm 5 weeks since it's been 5wks 2 days since my last period. I work out with a personal trainer, who has me mostly weight training 3 days a week. Do I need to stop working out this way? What is still safe?

re: Q: Yoga OK at 7 weeks?

Hi alyson005-

Definitely check with your doc about these concerns, but there's probably no need to stop training. Check out this Q&A for a few more details:

re: Q: Yoga okay 7 weeks?

There are yoga classes specifically designed for pregnant women, just do a search in your city for "prenatal yoga". I live in cleveland and found at least 5 places that offer such a class, one right down the street! It is nice because only pg women in 2nd or 3rd tri are allowed in the class, and it is taught by a certified teacher with specific training in what positions are best for pg and labor.

I just found a place in my area that does Prenatal Water classes. Anyone ever done this? I'm seriously contemplating signing up.

re: Q: Yoga okay 7 weeks?

I have taught prenatal yoga for many years and train yoga teachers in prenatal yoga.  Look for a prenatal yoga class.  The instructor should ask what week you are in and other pertinent health questions (first pregnancy? nausea? discomfort?)  If you take a regular yoga class, look for one that is not hot upon entering the studio.  Always err on the side of caution when in postures.  Drink water during class and stop if you get too warm.  Ask around for teachers who are gentler and more supportive if you feel pressured to do every pose (that is not a good yoga practice).
