Q: Early maternity clothes?

Posted Friday, February 29, 2008 5:34 PM

Q: I’m still really early in my pregnancy -- 10 weeks -- but my pre-pg pants just aren’t comfy.  Is it way too early to be hitting the maternity section?

Erika Lenkert: At 10 weeks I'd already packed on a cuddly 10 pounds, so believe me when I say I know what you mean!

Whether you hit the maternity section or otherwise, you have to do something because the one way to guarantee your favorite duds won't be waiting for you when you lose the baby weight is to stretch them beyond repair now.

Maternity clothing can be more expensive than regular fashions and it's likely that at this stage your shape is more plump than prego, so you might consider buying or borrowing a couple of regular items in larger sizes now. You probably won't be able to wear them for that long, but you can turn to them again post-partum.

However, there's nothing wrong with getting into maternity gear the minute you learn you're pregnant, if you want to. Just know that shopping maternity before you truly "pop" means you're more likely to have to buy larger sizes later. (Hey! Another excuse to shop!)

The most important thing is that you're comfortable, physically and emotionally. And one surefire way to feel good about yourself is to find comfy fashions that fit you and look good.

re: Q: Early maternity clothes?

I'm at six weeks and had to go buy a few new pairs of pants this weekend and a few new tops, lucky for us maternity style tops are in style everywhere!

re: Q: Early maternity clothes?

I am at 11 weeks and have "grown out" of most of my pants too. I went to the thrift store and bought a few pairs of crepe drawstring/elastic waist pants that I hope will get me through the next few weeks, as well as that dreaded fourth trimester. I also bought some regular khakis in 1-2 sizes larger than my normal.

I went looking for some maternity pants, but they were all so expensive, and have such odd looking waistbands that I'd have to wear really long tops with them.

Luckily, a lot of the fashions in the misses sections right now are cut with empire waist tops or "trapeze" tops, so I will have some crossover tops which may not last all pregnancy, but are perfect for now and later.

I am 10 weeks and in the same boat as you my pants are just not comfortable. I heard about the Bella Band and it is a godsend. You just unbotton your pants and put the Bella Band on works great.

re: Q: Early maternity clothes?

I use the tummy sleeve from motherhood maternity (onlyl $15), similar to the bella band, and like the gal above said, it's a godsend. I'm 13 weeks and have about half my pants that are too snug to wear normally, but the tummy sleever works great! (the other half were always a little loose, and now fit normal-to-almost-snug).

re: Q: Early maternity clothes?

This is my second time around with pregnancy, and I discovered a belly band like the two ladies above.  With the right tops (which are oh-so-fabulous right now) I was able to rock out in my pre-pg jeans until 6 MONTHS just by leaving them unbuttoned!  I didn't buy any special band, but rather took one of those 'sucker-inner' super supportive slips that I never wear anymore, and cut it to about 8 inches.  It totally did the trick and saved my wallet and fashion fierceness a ton!

I'm 11 weeks and in maternity clothes... My pants were not comfy at all and I was tried of that rubber band trick... My tops still fit but make me look fat  but maternit tops are more flattering and curve to your belly I think...

The belly bands only work so well...don't get me wrong it's truly a great thing while your "hiding" at work. I'm shopping this weekend for maternith clothes and I'm 10.5 weeks now!

re: Q: Early maternity clothes?

I am at 11 weeks and I am wearing maternity clothes, or at the very least empire-waists.  I thought, why buy baggy clothes when they'll only work for another month or so?  I am normally very hour-glass shaped, so all my regular stuff is tapered to fit my normally thin waist.  Now I am wide in the waist, too, so I had to do something to look nice.  I am not a "baggy t-shirt" kinda gal.

re: Q: Early maternity clothes?

Yeah, I am at 11 weeks too, and am sitting at my desk wearing my normal pants and a bella band.  I cant bring myself to wear maternity yet, they just wont fit.  Maybe in another couple weeks...

re: Q: Early maternity clothes?

I'm 15 weeks and still fitting in my size 0 jeans with the aid of an elastic band looped through the button hole.  I have been looking for the belly band in my local Target but they were sold out of the small and the M/L was too big for my bump. I decided to try ebay and was lucky I found a set of 3 belly bands (black, white and brown) for only $25 and the shipping was free.  If anyone finds a deal online or offline, please post and let us know how much you saved!

re: Q: Early maternity clothes?

At almost 11 weeks, I had to buy maternity pants....I have an hour-glass figure and now that I have a bit of a baby bump already.....I would rather go for comfort than trying to make those last pairs of larger pants fit with hair ties.  Target has great maternity work pants that still make me look slender. =)

re: Q: Early maternity clothes?

I agree with the other moms, I am 10 weeks pregnant and have the same issues, some of my pants are good while others don't work at all anymore, I have purchased some maternity clothes but not much, Im going to look next week for some more so I have different outfits.
