Q: How often should baby kick?

Posted Thursday, August 16, 2007 10:21 PM

Q: Some days the baby kicks all the time and other days he's really quiet. Is this normal?

A: When in comes to in utero activity, there’s a wide range of normal. As long as baby’s overall level of movement is consistent, there’s no need to worry. If you’re in your second trimester or the early part of your third, your baby may be more active than you think. On some days, you simply may not feel all of his kicks and jabs. If you’re worried, try counting kicks over the course of a few days; ideally, you should feel at least 10 within 2 hours. Write down the time you feel the first kick, then note the time of every new one you feel until you reach 10. Don’t expect the same pattern every time you count. Remember, you are looking for significant deviations over the course of a couple of days. If you ever experience a sudden decrease in baby’s movements, check with your OB. She may want to take a look.

Fetal Movement

I am 19 weeks and I still have not felt my baby move.  I know they say that you should feel something between 18 -22 weeks.  But I guess I am just so anxious.  How will I know if it is my baby rather than something else?

I didn't feel my baby until 19w6d - and I definitely knew it was the baby! I think it feels like a "flutter" if you feel it early - but at 19w6d, I could tell it was a baby foot or hand :)

re: Q: How often should baby kick?

I felt the baby around week 18, but had to be really still to feel it.  I've heard that laying on your back is a good way to feel something because your muscles get in the way.  Typically, I feel it most right near my belly button.  To me, it never feels like a flutter, but more like a hand brushing up against me.

re: Q: How often should baby kick?

I just turned 22 weeks and I am just able to feel the kicking. The flutter thing is hard for me to relate to but to me it feel like sorry to say this but when I have something with too much cream in it and my belly feels like it has mini pops going on inside.

Yeah for me,  in the beginning, it wasn't the flutter feeling I had heard so much about. It felt like when your eye twitches or your muscle spasms. Now at 22 weeks you definitely know. And just like bunbeda said if you lay back (and possibly out your legs up if you can) you will probably feel something in less than 30 min.

re: Q: How often should baby kick?

I felt the first movements at 18 weeks.  It did not feel like flutters, but a strong pulse.  At first I thought it was gas and when I would lay in bed I would feel it even more.  Then I thought that I was probably cutting my circulation so I would switch position and lay on my left side.  At about 20 weeks my husband would rest his ear on my belly and he could hear a pop sound whenever the baby kicked.  I'm 22 weeks now and the kicks are slightly stronger than they were at 18 weeks.  It's such a neat feeling.

re: Q: How often should baby kick?

My little guy has been moving since 17 weeks!! It really caught me off guard b/c everyone told me it would take a while for first timers. Though I was pretty fit and petite to start with, I think is the reason why I felt so early and often.. Anyone dealing with hiccups? Squirming sensations?? Maybe he's squished?

re: Q: How often should baby kick?

I'm petite and fit and could feel him moving at 17 weeks.  I feel him all the time.  I'm 23 weeks now and this last week he has definitely gotten stronger.  He never felt like a flutter.  Like nicshaw it was like nerve pulse.

re: Q: How often should baby kick?

It just started feeling definite moving (or at least what I couldn't blame on possible gas) when I started by 22nd week. Now, I realize that I was feeling the baby probably since week 20 but didn't know it!

re: Q: How often should baby kick?

I'm a plus sized girl, and at week 22 - I feel the baby some days and some days I don't but he's been fine at every checkup. Anyway, not all moms are petite and not all belly buttons are going to pop soon.
