Q: When do I need to go to the doctor once I have found out I am pregnant?

I had a miscarriage in June and seven weeks later I am on my period for the first time in months. Last time I found out I was pregnant I immediately got a doctor's appointment. It was determined that I was a mere four weeks pregnant. I had an ultra sound that day. I went back at seven weeks and got to hear the heartbeat. At eleven weeks I went in for a check up and found that the heart had stopped. Im worried about going in too early, I got very attached to the pregnancy and was devistated by the miscarriage. But, I don't want to put the pregnancy in harms way by not going soon enough.

Am 35 y/o and have been TTC X8 months without success.  I have had a progesterone 21 test, labs, and my husbands semen analysis all came back normal.  I also have been monotoring ovulation and timing when we should have sex...still no luck.  What else can we do?  Am so frustrated and getting depressed when my cycle comes.  My MD said to keep on trying and to come back in Feb if I don't get pregnant.

re: Expert Denise Gershwin, CNM

I stopped taking my birth control last July and my periods have always been a little weird. The last day of my period was December 23 and I have been experiencing cramping and nasuea so I think I am about to start- but no period! I have also taken 3 pregnancy tests and they have all said negative. What should I do?

re: Expert Denise Gershwin, CNM

I am newly pregnant with my 3rd child and I am really not looking forward to the time that comes after having my baby. What I mean is after my 1st and 2nd baby I had lost alot of hair in the front and clumps come out even just running my fingers through my hair. Now Im due to have my 3rd in November of this year and I have a really important  date coming up in July of 2010. Now I was wondering what am I deficient in like my body what am I lacking why my hair continues to fall out because this carries on for a year post baby. Is there any supplements that I can take afterward that can make my hair not fall out???

re: Expert Denise Gershwin, CNM

I am 20 weeks pregnant and completely excited that our baby girl is coming this fall. However, I haven't really felt overly excited about seeing a different OB/GYN every time I go to my checkup visits. However, last week I had my recent visit and totally hit it off with the mid-wife that we had our appointment with. I would like the opportunity to have her delivery our baby if possible but I know that the doctors at my office have another office closer to where I live. How much of a difference is it between the doctor and the midwife? My husband really wants to cut the cord if possible and I was wondering if that was a possibility?

re: Expert Denise Gershwin, CNM

Denise,

I am AMA and will be delivering when I am 37.  I have only 1 child and she is 18 yrs old.  I had a natural child birth that went very quickly and was fortunate that it was pretty easy.  I am considering a midwife rather than a doctor for my delivery, although I do still see the same doctor who delivered my daughter :)   My only concerns with switching to a midwife is that I am not sure they will accept me because I am AMA and also I tore terribly with my daughter and had to receive 2nd degree stitches.  I do not want someone who does not have great experience to stitch me up if it happens again.  Any advice for me?

re: Expert Denise Gershwin, CNM

Hi, I had a right salpingo-oopherectomy in July of 2007 and it was determined that I had a mucinous borderline tumour that was about 7cm wide.  They said there was no tumour spread and I've been having follow up at the cancer centre every three months and all is seemingly well.  I was given the go ahead to try and conceive in January so my husband and I have been trying.  I would like to have a midwife for my birth, but my family doctor said she would consider me a high risk pregnancy which midwives wouldn't normally take on.  I'm a birth doula and would LOVE to have a midwife there for my birth when I do get pregnant and was just wondering if you would consider me a high risk pregnancy?  In your opinion, would midwives take on my case?  I didn't have to have chemo or radiation.  Thanks!
