Q: Cleaning products harmful?

Q: Are fumes from floor cleaners and stains dangerous to my baby?

Dr. Ashley Roman: Unfortunately, there are few scientific studies to guide us on this issue. The precautions I recommend are generally common sense. Read the labels of your products carefully and avoid any products labeled as toxic. Use gloves when cleaning, avoid aerosol sprays that can be easily inhaled, and keep the room well ventilated. Because you are pregnant, you may be more sensitive to the smells of products that contain ammonia and chlorine. You may also want to consider using or making alternative cleaning products with baking soda or vinegar.

re: Q: Cleaning products harmful?

I try to use non-toxic cleaners but occasionally, a good bleaching is absolutely necessary, especially since I neglected all my cleaning duties in my first trimester. I use Clorox Cleanup Spray, but make sure the room I'm cleaning is ventilated (door open, fan on, windows open) and I wear gloves. The smell is actually kind of comforting (maybe I'm weird) but I try not to get too close. As with anything, use good sense and don't go crazy. Remember, our moms and grandmas kept clean homes and we all turned out ok.

re: Q: Cleaning products harmful?

I've found that the Clorox Greenworks line is not only wonderful at doing its job, but it has a gentle, pleasant smell.  I don't even mind cleaning with these products with my toddler around - they're all plant-based cleaners that don't have harsh chemicals.  Did I mention they do a great job? The glass cleaner doesn't streak at all and the bathroom cleaner requires little to no scrubbing to remove soap scum and hard water deposits!  I use the all-purpose cleaner on my floors in a solution and it doesn't even dry out my hands.... I highly recommend these cleaners even for the non-preg among us!

The "Method" line of cleaning products (sold at Target, and I've found it at many grocery stores) is fantastic and all-natural as well.  They clean better than the cleaners I was using previously.  I switched to using them for everything.  I like knowing they're safe for my baby too.

re: Q: Cleaning products harmful?

Unfortunately, most cleaning products sold at your local store are harmful. Even beauty products and baby soaps. (Unless it says organic or plant based.) I converted my home recently...www.melaleuca.com. The safest and best environmentally friendly products out there, and are at wholesale prices. Baking soda and vinegar don't disinfect and kill all germs. Contact me at mygreenjob@gmail.com for more info. Thanks

I have been using Seventh Generation sold at Target stores or many places sell a natural brand called Meyers. Both of these don't have the harsh chemicals.  Look at a store that sells natural or organic products. I even saw it at a sporting goods store. Its a bit more in cost but its worth it.

I use Mrs. Meyers. It's natural, vegan and plant-based. It comes concentrated and I just mix some up in a spray bottle. It's about $8 a bottle, but it lasts forever and smells great, too! For sterilizing, I just use peroxide.
