Q: Treating heartburn?

Q: How can I safely treat heartburn while pregnant?

A: Oh, one of the many joys of pregnancy: heartburn. But that burning sensation in your chest and the acid reflux in your throat don’t have to be a given. Check out over-the-counter medicines like Tums and Rolaids--just be sure you look at the labels. Avoid antacids that contain sodium citrate, sodium bicarbonate, aluminum, and aspirin (which may be listed as salicylate or acetylsalicylic acid) because they increase constipation and swelling. Make sure you check with your doctor before you take any other type of antacid. It’s always better to be overly cautious than an OTC renegade when you’re pregnant.

If you’d rather go the homeopathic route, try a tablespoon of honey in warm milk, a handful of almonds, or some fresh or dried papaya. Some find that chewing gum after meals also helps reduce acid.

re: Q: Treating heartburn?

Try drinking a large glass of milk after a meal or before going to bed, works for me! But when I'm on the go, Tums work great! Plus you get the extra calcium!

re: Q: Treating heartburn?

Probably not the best solution when we're trying to avoid putting on excess weight, but I've found that vanilla ice cream helps.

re: Q: Treating heartburn?

a steady supply of tums seems to be doing the trick for me!

re: Q: Treating heartburn?

Eating alot of tums can leave you constipated... like that isn't already a problem! I drink milk and chocolate milk when heartburn hits, and it works wonders for me. Plus its great for the extra calcium you would be getting from tums as well.

re: Q: Treating heartburn?

OMG! My heartburn and indigestion has been ridiculous lately.   Nothing helps, I've had to cut even the most seemingly benign foods from my diet because they make my chest burn for hours afterward.   The ice cream thing sounds promising though.   But is there ever any relief?

re: Q: Treating heartburn?

I always warm up a glass of milk and my heartburn is gone after that:)

re: Q: Treating heartburn?

I'm getting heartburn just from drinking a glass of water so my midwife has me taking Prilosec. Makes me hope that old wives tale of "lots of heartburn = head full of hair" is true. I need for there to be a good reason for all this discomfort.

re: Q: Treating heartburn?

I was using Tums but that only relieved the symptoms, and not preventing it.  So my doctor recommend Zantac 150mg twice a day. It works like a charm!

re: Q: Treating heartburn?

I find that Tums work the best. My doc said that Pepcid would be okay to take too if it got bad.

re: Q: Treating heartburn?

I tried both Tums and Pepcid, as recommended by my OB.   It worked for a while, but in that final month, NOTHING worked, and EVERYTHING caused heartburn.   My doctor finally wrote a script for Protonix, and it has worked beautifully.   I don't need tums or pepcid now....and no heartburn what-so-ever.   I only wish I would've asked for it sooner!!!

re: Q: Treating heartburn?

milk.....its awesome... i dont like taking any pills while pregnant. it just feels strange because what i eat my baby uses. i dont want any drugs in his system.. sometimes my heartburn is so bad i could go through a gallon of milk in one day.

re: Q: Treating heartburn?

I tried Pepcid (per OB's recommendation), milk and vanilla ice cream, which worked for a while, but then the heartburn got so bad I had to sleep sitting up at night.  My OB then suggested Prilosec, and I cannot believe how well it's working.  No heartburn at all after the 3rd day of taking the Prilosec.  Btw, at my 32 week ultrasound a couple days ago, the perinatologist said my baby girl has a whole head of hair--gives some credence to the wives tale!

re: Q: Treating heartburn?

I keep hearing TUMS will make you constipated, but after 10 years and 4 pregnancies, I have yet to experience this...and I take A LOT of TUMS!! They are my best friend lol

re: Q: Treating heartburn?

I don't like taking things like Tums or Rolaids. When I start to feel a little acid reflux & heartburn, I take a shot of Apple Cider Vinegar. It immediately goes away! It sounds weird to drink something acidic. But when you get heartburn, your body is essentially not producing enough gas which creates the burning sensation. Adding more acid into your body is actually helping.  I swear by this, try it and you'll see!

re: Q: Treating heartburn?

it sounds like it would have the adverse effect but i swear it works! i had a friend tell me about sipping some green olive juice a year ago when i was complaining about heartburn ...i ignored her until i was absolutely desperate and tums, milk, ice cream, other dairy, AND zantac failed me...it worked!

re: Q: Treating heartburn?

zantac and mint choc chip ice cream do the trick.. my baby is looking bald.. so we will see about the old wives tale....

re: Q: Treating heartburn?

I had awful heartburn and I tried it all! Milk, gum, tums everything, and the only thing that has worked was apple cider vinegar pills. I have a prescription for something stronger and more conventional but as long as the apple cider pills work. I will stick with them.

re: Q: Treating heartburn?

Baking soda in water also works great, too.  Just don't do it too much or you could neutralize all the acids in your stomach.

re: Q: Treating heartburn?

I actually was able to get by using dill pickles the first two trimesters. I would just make my husband get up in the middle of the night and slice me one up. At least it gave him a story to tell about mommy's craziness during pregnancy. When the heartburn/indigestion became too bad I started doing a glass of milk - also worked awesome. I made it until 27 weeks before taking a Tums and now I take maybe one a day. I still prefer the natural methods though.
