Q: Flying with baby?

Q: Flying with baby -- anything I need to know? Can I bring formula on the plane? Can I bring his infant seat as carry-on or will it have to be checked? What would you suggest I take or leave home? -MrsBalletStar05 MrsBalletStar05 is not online. Last active: 11/28/2007 9:34:04 AM

Online art director Nest Lori: Two weeks ago we took our 10-month-old son on his first flight to visit his grandmother in Rochester, NY. Even though the airtime was only an hour and our total trip was only three days, we still hauled what felt like a week's worth of gear through the airport -- the concept of "traveling light" simply doesn't exist when you're traveling with a baby.

We received some great tips ahead of time from BTDT moms, and developed some methods of our own. Here are some things you can do to make your next flight with baby a lot less turbulent:

Contact your airline ahead of time.
Find out their policies on checking strollers and car seats, and how much extra baby-related baggage you're allowed. Our airline let us take a big diaper bag and didn't count it as part of our carry-ons.

Consolidate. Anything you can bring that is dual-purpose will make life simpler. I saw a few people using the Go-Go Kidz Travelmate (shown here), which easily attaches on to your carseat and converts it into a stroller. Brilliant!

A sling or carrier is great for going through security. Since we had to put our stroller on the x-ray conveyor belt (we brought our folding Maclaren Triumph), I wore Cooper in my beloved Ergo Carrier through the security area. Having two hands free made things much easier, especially when recollecting our belongings after passing through the checkpoint.

Don't necessarily board early. As a courtesy, airlines allow you to board the plane early if you're traveling with small children. Reconsider doing this. Remember it takes 30+ minutes for everyone else to board, and all of that is just extra time your child will be spending in a cramped seat getting antsy. You don't have to board early.

Sit in the window seat.
I'm normally an aisle person, but since I was holding Cooper  on my lap, we wound up trading seats with the kind woman sitting next to us. Being in the window seat prevented his squirmy arms and legs from stretching out into the aisles where flight attendants and other passengers are constantly walking back and forth. (Yes, it's a harder seat to get out of, but we figured that was the trade-off).

Feed on take-off and landing.
The changes in pressure bother those little ears so it's a good idea to nurse or bottle-feed your baby during the ascent and descent. This forces them to swallow and helps keep the ears open -- worked like a charm for us!

Bring entertainment! So they don't wind up trying to climb up the seat in front of you (as Cooper attempted several times), bring tons of books and toys to keep baby's attention. Remember to leave home anything that squeaks loudly or makes noises -- the passengers sans-baby will thank you.

Plan ahead and relax. Traveling with kids can be stressful. Make packing lists for yourself and tape them on the back of the front door so you won't forget anything on your way out. If you are visiting family, contact them ahead of time and ask them to pick up things like diapers and wipes -- this will prevent you from having to pack such bulky items in your luggage.

re: Q: Flying With Baby?

I traveled by train when ever possiable, the seats are alot more comfortable, and and you can get up and walk around when ever you want to. Most trains have a snack car with tables that you can play at for a change of pace. And you can keep your stroller with you if you like to have a great place to change dc and they can sleep easily in it. -For me it was definitely worth the extra length of time it took compaired with air travel

The Go Go Kidz Travelmate is a MUST! We have used it for a few years now and it has made traveling MUCH easier. No need for the stroller. You don't have to take the travelmate off to fit it in the airplane seats or the car seats.  Plus, if the plane is a bit bigger it rolls right down the isle as well.  My kids love riding in it.  Plus, I have even lifted the baby from being rolled, kept him strapped in, and lifted his seat right onto the airplane seat.  It was awesome! Worth every penny. Can't believe you don't see more people with them - seriously amazing!

re: Q: Flying With Baby?

One more thing...as far as boarding early...not quite the norm anymore. In the past few months we have flown JetBlue (who were amazingly helpful!!), Continental, and American. None of the airlines let us board early and I was a Mom by myself with a 3 year old and an infant.  So just heads up on that...however, JetBlue went above and beyond from walking me through security, to helping me board the plane and get off the plane and while I was on the plane. In 3 years no other airline has been that accomadating! Just a plug for JetBlue!

re: Q: Flying With Baby?

As the mom of a 10-mo-old boy who has flown solo with him several times since he was born in February 2007, these are great suggestions.  However, re: carrying your in a sling or baby carrier through security, I have NEVER been allowed to do this!  The security agents have always made me take my son out of the carrier, put the carrier through the x-ray, and carry my son in my arms.   I suppose you may get lucky and get a security agent who takes  pity on you and lets you keep the carrier on, but just don't count on it.   And as for your last suggestion, I couldn't agree more!  If you plan ahead and adjust expectations so that you know everything won't be perfect, you'll have a much better experience.  Good luck!

re: Q: Flying With Baby?

I flew with our 4 month old son to Berlin, Germany and he did great. This is the time to fly because they are still not mobile. We took a red-eye to London and he slept most of the way (he woke up twice to feed and fell back asleep). On our way back to the states he was up for a while and we just walked around, entertained him and just made sure to feed when taking off and at landing.

re: Q: Flying With Baby?

One bad thing about airlines is how they weigh your bags - if you're over, you pay.  If you take extra bags, you also pay a hefty price.  But if you plan right, it's sometimes cheaper (and easier) to ship things to your destination.  If you pack far enough in advance, you can pay a cheaper shipping fee for longer delivery with the US postal service (vs. a FedEx or UPS 2 day service...).  You know you're going to need a weeks worth of diapers and there's no bulk store where you're going?  Ship it!  This works with extra outfits that you don't need during traveling.  Just make sure you compare prices to get a decent rate.  Once you get to where you're going, you don't need to worry about not having enough hands to get through the airport without losing you mind or your kids!

re: Q: Flying With Baby?

As far as bringing your carseat as a carry-on -- you won't be allowed to bring it on the plane unless you have a seat for the child, but you can gate check it (if they lose your luggage you get new clothes-- if they lose your carseat you're stranded at the airport!  So I ALWAYS gate check my carseat).  I would recommend getting a protective bag for it to make it easier to lug to the terminal AND to keep it from getting messed up.  We've only been on 2 trips with my son (but 10 take-offs and landings, so the carseat has been loaded that many times), and the bag already has a hole in the front that looks like it's from being dragged.  I'm happy that it was a bag, not my son's seat!

re: Q: Flying With Baby?

I second the poster who says you are not allowed through security with your baby in a sling or carrier - I flew with DD when she was 2 months old, I was alone, she was asleep, and they STILL made me wake her up and take her out to go through security, AND for take-off and landing.  So the carrier may make your life easier during the flight and walking through the airport, but the times when it's most needed, you're not allowed to use it.

And you're not allowed to bring any liquids, so we always brought empty bottles and pre-measured formula, and we would fill the bottles with water from water fountains after we went through security.  We've also been known to ask for water on the plane.  Just don't try to bring pre-mixed formula through security - they'll make you throw it out.

re: Q: Flying with baby?

I went right through security with Cooper in my Ergo without a problem. They even commented on how cute he was! I guess we got lucky.

re: Q: Flying with baby?

You're allowed to travel with formula pre-mixed now.  You just have to declare it when you go through security.

re: Q: Flying with baby?

I just flew with my 6 month old daughter in October 2008 and you are allowed to bring liquid formula or pumped breastmilk through security, but I agree with the earlier post that you MUST declare it when you go through. I would recommend packing all of your bottles in a large ziplock bag, so that when you go through security you can pull it out of your carry on and show it to the security officer.
