re: How Big is Baby?

Thanks to Paula for finishing the "How Big is Baby" timeline! My entire family can't hardly wait each week to find out what the new fruit/veggie is -- so I was disheartened when the original article only went up to week 20. I'm glad to see it's now carried out all the way to month 9! Although, I do agree that month nine could be something better than a cucumber??

re: How Big is Baby?

I love this timeline! It gives such a great visual. I am a nurse in an OB/GYN office and I am definately going to tell my patients about this. Thank you!

re: How Big is Baby?

For month nine . . . what about a certain sized pumpkin?  i'm not a doctor, and so i'm not sure that it would be the correct size, but it does seem like it would be bigger than a honeydew. just a suggestion.

re: How Big is Baby?

Spaghetti squash maybe?  That seems more reasonable...

re: How Big is Baby?

I am not sure how I feel about the Cucumber comparison, but the rest are awesome!!! LoL, my son was def bigger then a cucumber when he came out!!

re: How Big is Baby?

OOhhhhhh I see. Never seen an English Cucumber before! Sorry about the last comment, I understand now!!! LoL.....

I tried to think of another suggestion, but you are right, its hard!! :) I LOVE this timeline!!!!! THanks!

re: How Big is Baby?

I don't understand the comparisons either. A melon is definately bigger than a cucumber or a bannana.

re: How Big is Baby?

How about a small pumpkin or watermelon? Even a large cabbage (hence, "Cabbage Patch")?

re: How Big is Baby?

I would much rather imagine giving birth to a cucumber than something like a watermelon!

re: How Big is Baby?

Ok- how about a Spaghetti Squash... its the perfect shape and size!  In my opinion of course :)

re: How Big is Baby?

I think a large zucchini would be a good comparison.  It has the length of a cucumber, but more bulk and weight.  I know I have pulled some out of my garden that fit right in your arms like a newborn.

Posted by jmmyers3    Friday, September 14, 2007 1:28 PM

re: How Big is Baby?

it does sound a lot easier to birth a cucumber.

The fruits and veggies make sense when you look at the little info at the bottom....    :)

re: How Big is Baby?

i think my cucumber is actually the size of pie pumpkin or bigger!  but thanks for giving us a visual timeline.

re: How Big is Baby?

I think a spaghetti squash or a small pumpkin would be better too.

re: How Big is Baby?

On week 9 it states that baby is no longer an embryo, but is now a fetus. That is not correct. The baby becomes a fetus after 8 weeks of embryonic development, which would be week 10 according to LMP. You start your timeline at week 4 and have the embryo as a two week old zygote.

re: How Big is Baby?

wouldn't it be easier to follow if you used the measurements based on actual  other living animals? For example. week 20, your baby is the size of a chipmunk!

re: How Big is Baby?

How about a PUMPKIN or a WATERMELON or even a GOURD for month 9.  After all, that's what it feels like!  :)

re: How Big is Baby?

Can we have lbs and inches with the grams and cm.  I have no idea what 300 grams is equivalant to or 43 cm.  Not unless I get out my ruler and calculator anyway. :)

re: How Big is Baby?

i would have to agree that cucumber just seems off, and if it is supposed to be an english cucumber why wouldnt they just say english cucumber.

i just found this on another website for the 26 week description "Your baby now weighs about a pound and two-thirds and measures 14 inches (an English hothouse cucumber), from head to heel. "

Great to see it in inches!!!  It's a lot easier to tell other people now when they ask how big the baby is...

re: How Big is Baby?

This is really cool because I can tell people "my baby is as big as a plum!" One thing that kind of stinks though, is that visually, the chick pea looks like the same size as the watermelon...they're all zoomed in to make them all look the same size!

re: How Big is Baby?

I like the comparisons for the most part BUT, whoever thinks that fullterm is at 37 weeks is seriously mistaken-this website should know better than that!

Posted by bellachic    Monday, June 23, 2008 10:20 PM

re: How Big is Baby?

medically you're considered full term from 37 weeks.  dating scans can't be completely accurate (they usually say they could go one week either way), and because babies born from 37 weeks are completely viable, it seems to be the cut off for 'full term.'  if you gave birth any time from then, your baby wouldn't be considered premature.

re: How Big is Baby?

I am only at 9 weeks, but I think my baby is way past a green olive. It feels more like it's pushing toward a mango or cantelope, but I dealt with this same feeling with my other two. I'm already in paneled pants, but I have only gained a pound. YIKES! Looks like we're in store for another big baby.

This is such a super fun comparison to look at! It's really fun to go to the store, grab a mango or something and say, "look, Atreyu's this big!" My husband says he's going to bring the new item home each week to keep track. :)

Some people with my lemon status say they have felt the baby movee I wish I knew what that felt like.  I do get random sensations "cramps" but I don't think (know) if that's the baby moving or not

re: How Big is Baby?

Love that an olive and a prune are descriptors... we are calling baby Olive right now, because the amnio sac and embryo on the sonogram looked like an olive in a martini... Prunes... eating a lot of those to get this digestion moving!

re: How Big is Baby?

This can be slightly confusing as fruits and veggies differ in different parts of the country but I love using the visual aids with my students are who very excited that their teacher is having a baby!

re: How Big is Baby?

DH and I love this, too. We both use Facebook, so weekly we post a picture of what size our baby is. Our family and friends can "see" our baby growing week by week! We're not going to find out the sex, so we simply call the baby by its "fruit name" each week. =]
