re: Tool: Fertility Chart

This may be obvious - but I've been looking and can't figure it out.  On the chart, there's a section for cervix with three kinds of dots, one is solid, the other is medium and the last is the largest and they are labeled F, M, and S.  I have no clue what this is referring to.  Help!

Posted by ezschunke    Wednesday, February 20, 2008 8:23 PM

re: Tool: Fertility Chart

It means firm, medium or soft... the closer to ovulation the softer the cervix gets... the dots are how high the cervical position is and the dots are if the cervix is closed, alittle open, or open... hope this helps!!!

Check out the book "Taking Charge of your Fertility".  This chart is fully explained in that book.

re: Tool: Fertility Chart

What about the "OPK/LH surge"?  What's that mean?

Posted by Btobe    Saturday, March 01, 2008 6:01 PM

re: Tool: Fertility Chart

OPK = Ovulation Prediction Kit.  LH is the hormone that the kit measures.  So if you are using an OPK, LH surge means that the detector is telling you that you are ovulating.

re: Tool: Fertility Chart

Anybody have advice as to conceiving a girl? I already have a darling son 10 months old..

Posted by bobby2007    Thursday, April 03, 2008 1:56 PM

re: Tool: Fertility Chart

To concieve a girl you should chart your fertility and try to have sex during the beginning of your signs of fertility (so when your mucus becomes clear and thin, but before it turns thick, white and pasty). It has been shown that "girl" sperm have more endurance and live longer in the fertile mucus, and can usually live until ovulation while having sex right around the time of peak ovulation will result in a boy because boy sperm are faster. For more information on this and your fertility in general,  I would encourage you to check out the book "Your Fertility Signs" by Merryl Winstein and to research "natural family planning" online. It is a wonderful, drug free way to both plan intercourse to aid in conception, or to avoid pregnancy! Best of luck concieving your baby girl!!

re: Tool: Fertility Chart

"Taking Charge of your Fertility" is a great book!  We were pregnant within two months after reading just parts of the book.  I didn't even really chart my cycle, just took my temp every morning and paid attention to my vaginal fluids.  It also helps to "practice" everyday.  Another great book is "What to Expect When You're Expecting".  Before purchasing either of these books I read tons of reviews on many books and so glad I chose the two I did.

On conceiving a girl, pksmith is right -- sex during early fertile signs should get you a baby girl.

re: Tool: Fertility Chart

There is a great book that uses the same fertility chart in it.

It's called "Taking Charge of your Fertility" and it's amazing.  I've been using it for birth control (you just use the opposite method for trying to conceive).  It's great and the charting really gets you in tune with your body.  I highly recommend the book

re: Tool: Fertility Chart

Well I guess I should have read all the comments before posting...as now I see the person before me recommended the same book!  Well, now you can see how truly great the book is, haha

re: Tool: Fertility Chart

Ok, my husband and I are trying to have a baby..., all last week we calculated that I should be "ovutating", so we were.  But it seems I have cervical mucus now the week after (I think, this is my first time doing this).  If I did get pregnant last week, would I still have this cervical mucus this week?

re: Tool: Fertility Chart

According to the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility," which I went out and bought after reading some of the comments about it here (and also highly recommend), under a section of pregnancy symptoms, it says "creamy cervical fluid starting in the latter part of the luteal phase and continuing throughout pregnancy."  So if you became pregnant last week I would assume that it could be possible that what you're experiencing is in fact a symptom of that conception.

re: Tool: Fertility Chart

I hope that this doesn't turn anyone off but this is the exact same method that the Catholic Church teaches instead of contraception.  Its called Natural Family Planning.

re: Tool: Fertility Chart

...well it seems to work.  My in-laws are Catholic and both MIL and FIL come from families with 10+ siblings!

re: Tool: Fertility Chart

My husband and I have decided that 2009 is the year to start our own little family. After browsing the The Bump, I've realized how naive I am about a lot of things, including ovulation cycles.  Looks like I've got plenty of homework to do in this topic. I will definetely check out to books recommended.

Waiting to see if I am or not

Its driving me nuts!! My husband and I started this month and I am waiting to see if it took. I am hoping that it did, we have been married a year and a half and can't wait to have a baby.

re: Tool: Fertility Chart

I started charting a couple weeks ago, but I have PCOS, so I have had creamy, seemingly fertile, fluid for 89 days now!!! I have already thought I may have ovulated about 3 times now, but the temp change doesn't last, so be careful to track your signs carefully before getting too too hopeful about having conceived! It was really sad for me.

This may sound stupid and being a science teacher I should know this but don't.  How do you tell the cervical position and openness?

re: Tool: Fertility Chart

i will quote how to find the cervix....

"The cervix exam requires only one finger.  You can make this exam while sitting on the toilet, or you can make this observation in a standing position with one foot upon the toilet.  You insert your index or middle finger up the vagina to touch the cervix.  With daily observations from Day 6 and up to the start of Phase 3, you will begin to notice the changes, even as a beginner.   The hardest part of this observation for some beginners is finding the cervix since it can be quite high and at first they have no idea what they are looking for.  The tip of the cervix is like the stem end of a small pear after the stem has been removed."

re: Tool: Fertility Chart

oh and to add to that, some tips to quote about finding the cervix ....

"1.  Don’t observe the cervix in the early morning because the muscles supporting the uterus contract a bit during the night when you are sleeping.  Thus the cervix may be higher upon awakening.  You should be up and around a while before making this observation.  This gives the uterus and cervix time to return to their normal position.

2.  Don’t make the internal observation after a bowel movement.  The opening of the cervix may open more at this time. "

re: Tool: Fertility Chart

This is very similar to the chart that Natural Family Planning uses (which I highly recommend).. why would that turn anyone off??  It's a NATURAL method that is very effective and married persons who follow the program only have a 5% divorce rate.. I don't know how that could turn a person off!  Anyways, NFP has a course that shows you how to effectively monitor fertility and the best time to conceive.. it's a very good class if anyone is interested in a natural and healthy child planning method.

re: Tool: Fertility Chart

Just use fertilityfriend.com. i'm now in my second month of TTC (period hit yesterday. definitely not pregnant) and this tool is AWESOME. I LOVE it! You get a 30 day trial period of all the VIP features which are great, and they almost always have sales going on if want to go ahead and purchase the VIP membership. I got 90 days for $16.95. You just enter your information every day, and it charts everything for you. so simple. it took me a couple days of playing around with the site to get used to it, but now I love it! Go use it! (oh, and if you don't want to purchase the VIP membership, the basic is still free, but after you've used the VIP stuff, you'll want to purchase it!) Hope this helps!

re: Tool: Fertility Chart

I'm confused about the cervical fluid part right under the waking temp.  On the sample, all it has is a P (I'm assuming for the period days).  What else, if anything, should be put in those boxes?  I hope you know what I'm talking about!  Haha!

re: Tool: Fertility Chart

After visiting this board and reading the suggestions about the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility I ran out and bought it.  I am amazed at the amount of info I truly didn't know.  I am so glad I picked up this book and LOVE the software that came with it to help me keep track of my ovulation.  My husband and are planning on TTC in the next few months and now I feel as though we are prepared and are informed on how to go about this new journey.  I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who is TTC or thinking of TTC!!!
