Q: PCOS and Fertility?

Posted Tuesday, May 08, 2007 4:06 PM

Q: I was just diagnosed with PCOS… does this mean I won’t be able to get pregnant? What can I do to increase the likelihood of conceiving?

Dr. Joseph Hill: PCOS stands for Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome -- a common reproductive endocrine disorder that is associated with irregular or absent menstrual cycles and excess production of the hormone testosterone (called hyperandrogenism). Increased secretion of this male hormone generally causes excess hair growth, oily skin and acne. Due to the lack of regular ovulatory cycles and monthly release of an egg, PCOS is often accompanied by infertilty. Should a woman with PCOS become pregnant, the chance of early loss may also be increased.

While there is no definitive treatment for PCOS, there are therapies (often birth control pills) that aim to achieve regular menstrual cycles. If you want to get pregnant, medication (pills or injections) can be used to induce ovulation.

re: Q: PCOS and Fertility?

Hi!! I was diagnosed with pcos when i was about 14! I have been on the pill ever since and i went off of the pill in April of 07 because i was getting really bad mood swings from the pill. My periods haven't been coming reguarly which i expected. However, i was wondering if age played any type of factor with trying to become pregnant? I am 27 and would love to have a baby by 30!! I have an appointment with my obgyn in november but have a bunch of questions! Also with being off of the pill for a little while now will it be harder for me to get pregnant we were thinking about starting in March of 08! TIA, you can e-mail me at megan42603@comcast.net

Thanks,

Megan:)

re: Q: PCOS and Fertility?

My sister was diagnosed with PCOS about 4 years (she wasn't displaying the normal symptoms). They tried lots of fertility drugs, but nothing worked. Then they put her on a low carb diet to help lose some of the weight the drugs had added, and within a few months, she was pregnant.

re: Q: PCOS and Fertility?

I was just diagnosed with PCOS. My last cycle I took Femura and had a ultra sound but my folicles were 16, 15, 9, 9, 10 in size they said that wasn't mature enough for induction.  The nurse said, "Folicles could possibly not have eggs in them."  I am scared and feel like I am loosing hope.  Although on this next cycle my doctor will be adding other meds with the femara and the inducing ovulation medication.  I am just afraid that I am going to become overwhelmed and stressed.  I need your help to understand if this is a loss cause or should I push forward.  It is hard to stay calm during a situation I have no control over.  I will only go so far as to feel like I am in some type of control.  I don't believe that we should go broke as a couple to get pregnant that could cause stress on our marriage.  I guess I am just venting to the internet world right now.  I hope this ramling isn't just coming across unthought out.

re: Q: PCOS and Fertility?

cmpiazza - I feel your pain. I've been searching for a PCOS group in my area (St. Louis) and nothing exists. I feel like I can't talk to my husband about it anymore b/c he feels like he needs to DO something to fix this when he can't. I get so down about it, feel like I have nothing to hang on to. People just tell you to relax...they don't understand. If you need a personal sounding board, place to vent or someone to share experiences with you can talk to me!

Jaime - I understand your frustration, I'm in the Lou too with PCOS.  I "friended" you so that is me.

PCOS and Fertility?

women with PCOS can get pregnant. We've been TTC for 3.5 years. I get pg last year (MC at 8 eeks) and 5 months later i got PG again (MC at 9 weeks). I think my success was due to diet change and we "stopped trying" to save for invitro - both times. go figure. We lost both pregnancies. There is hope. I recommend working with a specialist and if all else fails and you can afford invitro, do that. or just skip to invitro if you don't want to waste time. Before I got PG, I had dropped about 12 lbs, was eating organic meat, eggs, milk, and did 3 rounds of accupuncture to ovulate. I was also put on Clomid 50mg for 3 cycles then the 4th 100mg and i got PG that cycle once they upped the meds. I was trying anything in the book...good luck. there is hope.

re: Q: PCOS and Fertility?

I was also diagnosed with PCOS a few years ago, when I was about 20. Luckly my mom was working for a fertility doctor and was able to diagnose my symptoms, and test later confirmed it.  I've been on Metformin ever sense and it has made the world of difference.  I have lot the extra weight that diet and exercise never could.  I have spoken with my mom and her doctor about it and they both say that it is one of the easiest treated of fertility problems.  I am getting married in August 8th, 2099 and we will be trying for a baby soon after, so we'll see what happens.  If worse comes to worse though and I can't get pregnant, I'll just have the surgery and go from there.

re: Q: PCOS and Fertility?

I was diagnosed with POS about 10 years ago, when I suffered from severe acne and my dermathologyst recommended me to go to the gyn for testing. I got married last year and we want to have babies in 2010 but knowing now that it might be difficult to get pregnant, I guess we should start earlier than that. I have an appointment with the gyn in May. Is there anyone in here with POS that was successful in becoming pregnant? Or do you know someone who did? Just wanting to be realistic and be prepared for what may come...Thanks!

re: Q: PCOS and Fertility?

I also have pcos, I am not currently trying but in a couple months I will be going to a new set of doctors at Women and Infants Hospital. I didn't approve of my ob/gyns approach. I will keep everyone posted when the time comes. Right now I am still trying to lose weight on my own...We will see how it goes!

re: Q: PCOS and Fertility?

I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was about 14, I was put on bc and had a steady boyfriend. We used bc and other kinds of protection, and I still got pregnant at 20. Now, we have a beautiful baby girl, got married, and are trying for our second. I'll keep you updated on whether we are successful or not. But I just wanted to let you know that it is possible to conceive with PCOS, and it's worth it!!

re: Q: PCOS and Fertility?

I'm 31 and about a year and half ago I was diagnosed with PCOS, but thinking back I started was placed on the pill for irregular periods I was on the pills for ten years I got off of them and a week later I got pregnant, I think I got lucky on the timing.   I did have a difficulty pregnancy and went into premature labor I was two weeks in the hospital and the remaining of the time on bed rest.  I want another child and I I know that it's not going to be as easy.  But I'm grateful that I have a healthy four year old and I feel so blessed.

re: Q: PCOS and Fertility?

I'm glad I found this site, and to find women who are going through what I am.

My family doesn't understand. I was diagnosed Oct 2007 with PCOS after 2 yrs of TTC. I have went through a storm of emotions and so has my hubby. I'm 25 been married for 2 1/2 years. I just recently had a miscarriage last month, and now I know there is Hope. I have been taking Metformin 1000mg 2x a day and tomorrow I start Clomid, I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I know it probably won't work the first time but I'm keeping Faith and praying every night. I will update in the days to come, especially with the side effect from clomid. I Thank Everyone for Posting the experiences they have been through.

re: Q: PCOS and Fertility?

I was diagnosed with PCOS about 6 months ago and we have been TTC for 8 months. Nothing yet. I tried to judge my cycles on my own but finally tried an ovulation kit to see if I was even ovulating. I am so hopefully now that I know exactly when the time is right. My doctor suggested I use a basil body temp thermometer but it is so much easier to pee on a little stick and let it do its thing while I am in the shower in the morning than have to take my temp. and wait before even getting out of bed. I recommend the ovulation kits to everybody who cant figure out their cycles. I have a friend who TTC for 2 years and she used the kit religiously and said some months she didnt ovulate so its not uncommon not to. And she doesnt even have PCOS or any type of contition that would interfere with getting pregnant. So its basically a crap shoot.

re: Q: PCOS and Fertility?

My only neice just turned one and seeing my husband with her and having my own experiences with her left me yearning for a baby of our own.  My husband wasn't exactly on board for starting a family yet...but I wanted my body to be ready when he decided he was ready and got off BC in October. So in December when I missed a cycle I thought maybe I'd gotten lucky---a month later with many false pregnancy tests and still no cycle I saw my doctor.  Through it all I keep thinking that I NEED to start now if there ever going to be a chance that we'll have a baby...that by waiting another year (which is all my husband is asking for) that my life with biological children is going down the drain. How can I get him on board? What do you all think?

re: Q: PCOS and Fertility?

I was diagnosed at the age of 13 with PCOS and have had to have surgery twice, once at 13 and again at 18, to have cysts removed. My periods have been regular and I have not had the sharp pain i used to get. They told me i should have no problems TTC, now that im getting married in a year, we want to start a family right after the wedding, but we are scared that my history of horrible cysts and a dr.'s diagnosis of PCOS will keep us from having our own children. Does anyone have any advice? we want to wait a few more months before going to a DR. but i have been off BC for 7 months now because i was gettin crazy mood swings and my periods are still regular..

thanks

Possibilities...

Like everyone else here, I have P.C.O.S., or so they all think. I haven't done the ultrasound yet...(I'm waiting another 6months--so we will have been trying for a whole year by that point).   But, I feel like I've been tested for everything else: Thyroid abnormalities, anemia (I can't spell it). I'm discouraged my husband & I aren't pregnant. But, it's really comforting to realize that I'm not alone.

And, to "Jamie&Jason"...when you wrote "I get so down about it, feel like I have nothing to hang on to. People just tell you to relax...they don't understand. " ....you made my day. I can SOOOO relate to that. I'm there.

thanks to everyone.

Hopeful. . .

My husband and I have been trying to conceive for about one and half years. After committing to a vegetarian lifestyle, I experienced a cycle. I was very excited and more excited when it did not return. I finally went "back" to the doctor for an update on my progress, but nothing had changed. My heart was completely broken when the doctor suggested I go back on birth control for the next two months to establish a pattern in my body. I came home and cried for several hours. After reading several of these post, I feel hopeful. I have my ultrasound next week to confirm my doctor's suspicions. But one thing she did say to me was that it wasn't impossible to get pregnant. And from what I am hearing on these boards is that she is right . . . so I am hopeful.
