The Trials of Teething

We have one very cranky baby at our house, and two very frustrated parents who are feeling quite helpless at the moment. I’m almost certain my little guy is teething, but so far his pearly whites have yet to make an appearance. I’m one of those moms that doesn’t like to give Motrin or Tylenol unless it’s necessary, but I’m wondering if I should just give him a dose to see if it makes him more comfortable. It’s so unlike him to cry for no apparent reason, but he’s had a rough couple of days where he just can’t seem to settle down. He just turned six months (yesterday!), and he’s been drooling and chewing on everything within reach for the last six weeks, so it make sense that he's teething. On our pediatrician’s recommendation, I put a damp baby washcloth in the freezer so he can chew on it for a little instant pain-relief, and one of my coworkers offered these teething tablets that she used for her boys.

What are your favorite tips/products for teething babies?

re: The Trials of Teething

Susan - I am a big fan of Orajel. When the twins are really inconsolable, I just rub a dab on the top and bottom gums and it starts working immediately. Both babies definitely seem shocked when I first apply it, as it is a weird sensation (I tried it out myself first!), but a moment later they are happy and much more comfortable. It's been a huge help for us - especially at bed time!

re: The Trials of Teething

I have to disagree with Judy. Orajel hasn't done much for us, and when he's in pain he doesn't even let me near his mouth to put it on his gums! I give him Tylenol Infant Drops when he is really uncomfortable and inconsolable. Within 15 minutes he is usually pain-free and sleeping soundly! The most I'll give it to him is two nights in a row. Be sure to consult your pediatrician before giving your baby any meds. Good luck!
