Stuff we love: Our top picks from the ABC Expo

Posted Monday, September 29, 2008 10:37 AM

It seems like everyone’s got baby on the brain, including the 800-plus vendors that showed up at the ABC Kids Expo in Las Vegas to show off the newest products for moms and babies. Here are the products we couldn’t stop talking about:

Shady Baby Stroller Umbrellas

Okay, so the all-black stroller umbrellas made by the same manufacturers as your baby’s wheels aren’t exactly stylish, but they get the job done. Even so, you might be itching to find something more unique, quirky, and, well... a little more fun. Enter ShadyBaby stroller parasols! These stylish umbrellas ($35) have a clamp that fits around most strollers, so all you have to do is push a button and tada! Your baby is out of the rain or protected from the sun. Starting in October, ShadyBaby currently has about five designs; our favorites include the rocket dots and damask print with a red ruffle. ShadyBaby.

Kina Lambskin Booties

These lambskin booties from Kina are handcrafted in New Zealand and made entirely of natural lambskin and lambswool. Don’t feel too guilty about the lambs either; Kina booties are made using material from lambs that died of natural causes. The soft “shoes” retail for $38 and come in three different shades of brown, as well as red, pink, and baby blue. They’re even made small enough to fit infants. Kina.

DadGear Diaper Vest

Something for the guys! Okay, so your man isn’t into the whole diaper bag thing. Can you really blame him? Now he can look good and carry the goods with a diaper vest from DadGear ($82). How does it work? The travel wipes and bottle go in specially sized pockets on the right side of the vest while the front pockets are all about the diapers. There’s even room for his stuff (the other him, as in, the big one) like a left chest pocket for his cell phone, keys and iPod. The guys at DadGear thought of everything—they even put a small changing pad in the back. DadGear.

Ingrid & Isabel Everywear Pant

The geniuses that brought you the BellaBand (gotta keep those jeans up somehow!) is at it again; this time with a pair of pants that can be worn three different ways. Not only that, but they’re so comfortable we’d wear them pregnant or not! The “Everywear” pant retails for $88, which might seem like a lot to pay for a pair of pants until you realize you can wear them to the gym, grocery store and out to dinner. Pull them down low beneath your belly for support, over the belly for full coverage or fold them down to create a skirt-and-leggings look. Ingrid & Isabel.

Mamaroo Infant Seat

We’re all over this new bouncer-meets-swing by 4moms. The “Mamaroo” has five movements, including the rocking motion moms universally make (think: standing with your knees bent and bopping softly back and forth). It also has five built-in natural sounds, such as “heartbeat,” and comes in a variety of colors (we love the orange!). Right now, it’s slated to retail for $200.
Available in February 2009

SwaddleDesigns Ultimate Receiving Blanket

Badass moms beware: SwaddleDesigns now has a cheetah-print version of the Ultimate Receiving Blanket, so you can wrap your baby up in (your) style. The square blanket is 42” x 42” and is made of 100-percent preshrunk, super-soft cotton flannel and costs $25. SwaddleDesigns.

Timi & Leslie Luxury Diaper Bags

We know you’ve seen a million diaper bags. But the latest and greatest from the bag company Timi & Leslie will have your prebaby designer tote still sitting in your closet even after your baby is out of diapers. We had a hard time picking just one bag to show since we’ve deemed almost everything in the collection as wear-worthy, but this eggplant-colored, patent leather “Ruby Bag” was a favorite. We admit this is a splurge, since some of the luxury bags go for around $400, but we couldn’t resist! *Sold only in stores or by online retailers, TimiandLeslie.

Combi Coccoro Car Seat

The car seat just got much cooler with Combi’s Coccoro line of convertible compact seats that come in colors like chestnut, Key lime, cool mint, strawberry shake, hazelnut, carrot cake, and cherry pie (is anyone else hungry now?). The Coccoro weighs just 11 pounds and is specifically designed for smaller (and, ahem, more fuel-efficient) vehicles. Available in 2009, Combi.

Baby Silk Skin Products

Baby Silk was developed by two pediatrician-moms who wanted to make a better product for their little patients. The entire line of lotions, creams, soaps and wipes is made with ingredients like marine silk, botanicals, vitamins E, and B5 and soft scents from orange and Gala apple blossom oils. Try the Gentle Scalp Rub and Gentle All-Over Cleansing Towelettes. Prices are higher than you’d see at your local pharmacy (individual products range from $7.50 to $28), but you can feel good about this -- MD Moms makes a donation to a different charity every year. This year it’s the Oscar Litwak Foundation, which works to create and maintain playrooms in pediatric hospitals, clinics, and wards. MDMoms.

My First Shades Sunglasses

We love these sunglasses for babies made by My First Shades, not just because they come in fun designs like flowers and ladybugs for girls and ducks and baseballs for boys, but also because the stretchy band actually keeps them on your baby’s face. Even better, the band is both safe (read: no plastic around baby's head) and comfortable. Oh yeah, every pair provides 100-percent UVA and UVB protection and is waterproof to boot! Prices range from $15 to $20. MyFirstShades.

*All prices are subject to change.
