Tell us: Breastfeeding linked to good behavior?

Posted Monday, November 10, 2008 2:01 PM

The many benefits of breastfeeding have been known for years; but we're pretty sure you haven't heard this one yet: According to a recent study by the National Survey of Children's Health, breastfeeding can actually promote better behavior in children under the age of five. The study, which surveyed more than 100,000 parents of children between the ages of 10 months and 18 years, further adds to the argument that breastfeeding stimulates strong cognitive development.

So, what do you think about this study--skeptical? Do you think your child's behavior could have anything to do with whether or not you breastfed them?

re: Tell us: Breastfeeding linked to good behavior?

not sure how i feel about the conclusion of the study though i would be in the 15% of parents that were not concerned about their kids' behavior ... i have 3 kids under the age of 4 and exclusively BF-ed my older two for about 15-16 mos ... littlest one is only 5 mos ... so i can't really say ... but certainly i agree that there are many benefits to BF-ing!

i can't agree with the study totally because there are evidences around me that shows that an exclusively BF-ed kids don't have good behavior.i do agree that there are many benefits of Breastfeeding but the issue of good behavior is attributed more to training, i.e, parental, societal & religious upbringing of such BF-ed kids.

I just think it is crazy to say that breastfeeding produces better behaved children.  UM I'm sorry but I think that has more to do with how you raise them and their evironment and temperment.  But with that being said do support BFing and the many benefits.

I think (and nobody hate me for this please!!!) that breastfeeding mothers are probably more tuned into there children than formula mothers. I think that the fact that a lot of breast feeding mothers are SAHMs, the children get more one on one attention, which leads to better behavior (if the child is raised well). Maybe I'm reaching at stars!

re: Tell us: Breastfeeding linked to good behavior?

Shainababygirl, I completely agree with you. There are reasons why the female body is created to feed a baby, and its not just that the breastmilk is better for the baby, its the bond and relationship that is created from that skin to skin contact. Breastfeeding forces you to constantly be with your child. Not only that, breastfeeding clearly takes more effort and time, thus demonstrating patience and dependability in the mother, which children need to learn & test the boundaries. If the mom is already excercising these qualities in other aspects of their life, those qualities are sure to be seen in other areas of their lifestyle, especially parenting. Essentially, this study is stating the obvious. The more effort you put in the better the outcome.

re: Tell us: Breastfeeding linked to good behavior?

I think there is a link that is missing, the study implies BFing <I>causes <I> good behavior, but maybe it's the other known benefits like a bond with parents that then makes the child more receptive to wanting to behave.  I know with 4 and 5 year olds at the pre-school I worked at some children responded better to "you are making me sad" than others, which I would attribute to being more aware of how your actions impact others.
