I always go into Finley's nursery, dim the lights, put on some soothing music (her nightime baby einstein) swaddle her up. Offer her the pacifier and then rock her and gently pat her back...works everytime! I try to make her as cozy and comfy as possible so she knows she is warm and safe.

Each baby is different. Normally putting your child on your chest where they can hear your heartbeat works, it reminds them of the womb.

I always do the nuh-nuh hum and gentle sway. My mom used it when my sister and I were young, her aunts used it on them and I definitely plan to use it on my child. It is a tradition and guaranteed soother. The belief is the hum creates a quiet vibration in your chest that gets the baby to calm down. I've seen it work in two minutes, the most 15 minutes.

I usually pick my daughter up, give her her favorite blankie and either rock her or walk her around the room while singing to her. She usually calms down.

I find that if I behave to my son the way I want him to be he will calm down. I talk quietly, smile, make eye contact and stay calm - he will eventually calm down. Gas drops and a gumdrop pacifier will also work when he is gassy or overtired.

Swaddle, shushing, side to side rocking, and sleeping on my chest all helped my daughter to feel calm and relaxed. It's amazing how well swaddling a baby helps them.

Patting the butt, not too hard, but just enough to give a good pat. Combine this with a good secure hold over your shoulder, and babies fall right to sleep.

Not sure how my husband figured this one out, but he takes a tissue and lightly brushes her face and forehead with it. It's amazing to watch how quickly she stops fussing and bats her eyes until she's either calm or asleep.

My husband & I are originally from Texas & two-stepping to country music is one of our favorite things to do. When my daughter was upset, we'd wrap her up & hold her between us while we danced in the living room. She loved it & it was a great bonding experience for all of us. She's almost 4 now & she still asks if she can dance with us!

SWADDLING! both my two girls were swaddled til they were about 5 mos which i know is longer than most babies but it truly comforted them! i am due in june with my 3d girl and though it's my first summer baby i do plan on swaddling again ... =) ... just trying to find the perfect summer swaddle blanket ...

Every baby is different. Our child has been a blessing and swaddling will calm him down. He's 7 months and still has to be swaddled everynight to go to bed. By showing love and remaining calm a baby will eventually calm down. Good luck mommies and daddies!!!

I'm glad I read the rules!

When my daughter was fussy,depending on if it was feeding time or after a feeding time, I would check her diaper or see if she was rooting for food. Then If neither was true, I assumed it was gas... as it often was, then I would bicycle her legs and push her knees gently to her tummy to help her pass the gas. She didn't like to be swaddled after she was two weeks old, so that trick never helped with my daughter, unfortunately... nor did rocking!

My suggestion for any new mom is to try everything under the sun and systematically discover what your child's likes and dislikes are. That helps you to find out what is wrong in short order!

I think different babies are best soothed in different ways. My two children responded to somewhat different things. My son enjoyed being swaddled, while my daughter couldn't stand being restricted in any way. My daughter was calmed by loud music, while my son always appreciated silence. My best advice is to listen to your baby and try lots of different movements, sounds and positions. Both of my children have been soothed by being walked back and fourth, as I'm sure most babies are.

Of course all babies are different, but whatever your method it's always more effective if you are calm and relaxed (sometimes easier said than done!) An upset baby is not going to be easily soothed by stressed or frantic parents. So, take a moment to breathe and relax. If you are calm your baby is more likely to be calm.

I would pick my baby up, cradle him, and sing him a lullaby that I wrote for him. I would hold him close to me and just sing and it just calmed him down. I still like singing him that song.

I don't have a lot of experience soothing newborns yet (that tune will change come October!), but I know that older babies and toddlers can be just as distressing when they cry. They like it when real contact is made: quality eye contact and really talking *to* them, not just *at* them. I think this helps little ones know that you're trying to ease their problems, not just get them to be quiet (which is just easing *your* problem!)

My dad used to take me for a ride in the tractor and swears by it. I'm not sure that'll work in NYC where I live now, but, hopefully, in September when my first is born and my dad comes to visit, he can help us find an alternative.

When my neice would need soothing, I would swaddle her with flannel receiving blanket and gently rock her back in forth as I stood, it put her right to sleep!

when our baby was less than a month old she was just an angel and was so easy to care for...i had a hard time recovering from labor and with breastfeeding (woo~ the pain)...she ate, poop, and slept. From 1+ month til before she turned 3 months was the nightmare phase when she would be up from midnight to 6am crying nonstop. The only thing that soothes her is the sound of the blow dryer so I'd sleep with the blow dryer blowing all~ night next to us on the bed (probably a fire hazard but it got both of us some much needed shut eye). We tried everything else but nothing else worked (Happiest Baby on the Block's 5 Ss, white noise CDs, bathroom vent, etc) only the sound of the blowdryer did the trick. At 3+ months I nursed her to sleep and would put her down in her own room in her crib. If she wake up at night to feed then she'd eat with her eyes closed and then continues to sleep after feeding. Sometimes she'd sleep from midnight to 5am without feeding. At 4 months she got her bottom 2 teeths and started teething on the top soon after, I tried all kinds of teeth rings and none really effective to her satisfaction. I then thought of the idea of making frozen breastmilk popsicles and it worked like wonders. I didn't have to worry about what she was ingesting (unlike chew toys/teething rings) and it stayed cold (unlike teething rings that would burst if frozen therefore can only be kept cool in the frig and would warm up quickly after she puts it in her mouth). I would recommend this for any breastfeeding moms of fussy babies due to teething pain.

When my little guy was a baby I would always sing the song from Dumbo "Baby Mine" and just hold him tight. He would fall asleep within minutes. He is 5 and this still works.

I am mom to four now grown babies, but the most effective way to soothe a crying baby is very simple: cuddle them. If they have colic, rubbing the back gently and humming softly into his/her ear helps. I also breastfed all four of my kids, so sometimes that was all that was required. I think just remembering how hard it is to be a tiny, helpless little person in a great big world and how much feeling loved alleviates that fear, is helpful.

When I kept my niece and she would cry I would whisper in her ear and she'd quieten down and eventually fall asleep in my arms. I say all sorts of sweet things like "You are so beautiful," and "I love you so much," over and over again and she'd relax and fall asleep. It worked like a charm. Now she's five and can't wait for her new cousin to get here! She will come up to me and make up sweet songs and sing to my growing belly.

Swaddle the baby, then hold the baby in the football hold with the baby on it's side, lean the baby up against your hip and rock your hip back and forth. It works like a charm, I used to be a nursery nurse, and trust me it works!

Soften the lights do not wear bright prints or cover them with plain colors and swaddle the baby and rock. Do not look directly at them this is overstimulating.

If its during the day and she is just fussy I like to hold her close, pat her butt, and walk or sway back and forth. If i'm trying to get her to sleep then swaddling and shhhing in the ear seems to work wonders to quiet her down.

Patience. After assessing the basics, diaper, temp, tummy, you sometimes need to realize that crying is just part of the parenting. Babies sense when you are stressed and that can only make matters worse. Take a dep breath and have patience and realize your little one may just need to clear his lungs:)

find out first if your baby has a dirty diaper or hungry. then try to swaddle. my daughter had to be swaddled everywhere till about 7 months and noise.i ran the vacuum when she was napping so we didnt have to be quiet when she slept, but have patience try to find out what your baby likes. some babies like loud music. or white noise. some like the quiet.

I nursed so nursing my little girl always did the trick. Bu after we weaned she would curl up in my tummy and lay her head on myshoulder and I'd pat her bottom until she slept. For her daddy, he'd put her in the carseat and drive until she settled.
