"It was
quite surreal at first, but now that the reality has set in (and I’m
not even 100% sure it actually has yet), it’s the most amazing feeling
in the world!"
Matt and Sharett
Matt & I met when we were both 18 years old – we immediately had a strong connection. So strong, in fact, that after he went off to Arizona State University for a year and we didn’t talk at all, he felt compelled to call me to try to spark things back up! I was reluctant, but after a few months I gave in and gave him a second chance! We dated for 4 and a half years before we got married at the age of 24. I was so impatient about becoming his wife; I insisted we go to the courthouse about 2 or 3 months after we had gotten engaged! We do still plan to have an actual wedding ceremony, but not until after the little one comes. So time went on and at first neither of us were ready for children. We were fairly young when we wed, so this was not a surprise to most. We have been married for almost 3 years now and it still feels like the honeymoon phase! It’s the most amazing thing ever and I love him more than anything!
The big decision
So Matt had made up his mind at least a year or more before I did that he wanted to start a family. I mean, I always knew I wanted to have children, but I just wasn’t sure when – it took me a little while to finally make that decision. And it’s a big one, let me tell you! But I tend to abruptly decide about things like this. It’s like, one day, I will say, oh, I’m not sure. Let me think about it. Then the next I’m like, let’s do it now! Kind of how the courthouse wedding thing happened! So when I went to Matt and I said, when do you think would be the best time for us to start trying for a baby and he said, now, I was all for it!
That was fast!
We began trying to conceive a baby in January 2010. By the beginning of February, I had missed my period! I was thinking there was no way it could happen this fast! But it did! A few days after my missed period, I knew I was pregnant! So of course I did the home pregnancy tests (3 of them) that all came out positive. Then I headed to the doctor and got the blood pregnancy test done—it was positive, too! And thus began our journey into the unknown! It’s been the most exciting time I’ve experienced in my life! It was quite surreal at first, but now that the reality has set in (and I’m not even 100% sure it actually has yet), it’s the most amazing feeling in the world!
Breaking the news
As soon as we got the results from the blood pregnancy test, Matt and I were ready to tell our families! We were just about ready to burst holding the news in for a week! So the first stop was my mom’s house. She and my grandmother were there. Now, my mom was caught completely off guard with this news because no one knew Matt and I were trying for a baby! So here’s how it went:
Me: Mom, I’M PREGNANT!!
My mom: *looks at me disbelieving* No you’re not.
Me: It’s not April fool’s day, Mom. Yes, I am!
My mom: No you’re not! I want to see the pregnancy test!
Me: *rolls my eyes*
Then there were hugs all around! My grandmother was listening and chuckling the whole time. This is my mom’s first grandchild, so she was elated once she believed the news! A day or two later I sent her the picture of the pregnancy test! The next stop was Matt’s family. He called his immediate family and had everyone meet up at his parents’ house for a barbeque. Surprisingly, no one suspected what was going on! As everyone was gathered at the table & grace was said over the food, I looked around to make sure everyone was there. Once people were settled, I said, “So, everyone, I’M PREGNANT!” There was a small uproar at the table and all the baby talk began! Any names picked out? Do you want a boy or a girl? Just wait for all the fun stuff your body’s going to go through! That last comment was from Matt’s sister who has 2 children. It was definitely a fun day for both of us & one we’ll probably never forget!
My first appointment
I felt like it took forever for my first appointment with my obstetrician to come! I found out I was pregnant at about four weeks along, but they would not see me until eight weeks (apparently that’s pretty standard). So the day FINALLY arrived and I was beyond excited to get to see my little peanut for the first time. On top of the excitement, there were nerves! I had been horribly nervous for four weeks waiting for this appointment. I did a lot of reading and did not like the statistics I found on miscarriage in women who are pregnant for the first time. This was very scary stuff for me. And I had a million questions for my doctor since this was my first pregnancy.
So I had the ultrasound and found out everything was going great. I was even a week further along than we thought initially! This appointment really put my mind at ease. Next the doctor recommended that I get the first trimester genetic testing done. About three weeks later, I went in for that testing. It’s a non-invasive test, so I wasn’t that worried. On top of that, I’m still fairly young, so I figured there shouldn’t be too much risk for genetic abnormalities. I haven’t gotten the test results back yet, but this appointment was really great! We had a wonderful ultrasound technician and got to see our baby in 2D and 3D! Absolutely the most amazing thing I think I’ve ever seen! My baby is growing like a weed – it’s unbelievable! I’m going to be a mother for the first time and I’m scared, nervous, elated, and giddy all at the same time!
