Melissa Tober dishes on the highs (a positive pregnancy test on Mother’s Day) and lows (fast food cravings).
Q: How did you and your husband spread the word that you were expecting?
A: I found out I was pregnant on Mother’s Day. So I called my mom and said, “Happy Grandmother’s Day!” It was special because my mom had been diagnosed with cancer two years before, and I really wanted to make her a grandma. We did the same thing for my husband’s parents. After 12 weeks, I brought in an ultrasound picture to show my coworkers, though they already suspected I was pregnant because my clothes weren’t fitting the same!
Q: What little indulgences or cravings did you give in to during pregnancy?
A: The minute I hit my second trimester, I treated myself to a prenatal massage at Spa Sydell (spasydell.com). My body was aching so badly, and it really helped soothe my sore muscles. I also made a trip to Taco Bell, and I never eat fast food. It was after a 26-mile bike ride, but still!
Q: What about maternity clothes? Did you have fun shopping for them?
A:Yes! Most of my favorites came from Mimi Maternity. I also shopped at Macy’s at Lennox Square Mall and Gap maternity.
Q: What were your favorite activities while pregnant?
A: My husband and I were very active mountain bikers pre-pregnancy, so we switched to walking. And we really loved escaping to my parents’ cabin in the mountains.
Q: Your advice for other moms-to-be?
A: Love your growing body! Even though it’s changing and you might not always feel your prettiest, a cute outfit and a little pampering go a long way. Oh, and drink plenty of water!
