Q: Understanding ovulation?

Posted Tuesday, March 20, 2007 9:38 PM

Q: What exactly does ovulation mean and how can I tell when it's happening?

A: Ovulation is your window of opportunity for conception. It's the once-monthly release of an egg from your ovary, and the best time to try and make a baby. The tricky part is that ovulation can vary from month to month (even in the same woman), making it hard to predict. Try our ovulation calculator, or use this mathematical equation (don't worry, no algebra!) to put yourself in the ballpark.

Subtract 14 to 16 days from the date you expect your next period to start to find your likely time of ovulation. Your mission: Start having sex five or six days prior, every other day. (If your cycle is longer than 35 days or shorter than 21 days, or if the your cycle significantly varies from month to month, this equation might be off). Or, to avoid the math, buy an ovulation predictor kit at the drugstore. Pee on a stick around the time you expect to ovulate, and the color will let you know when it's time.

Cervical mucus gives another clue to ovulation. (Yeah, it's gross, but it pales in comparison to all the bodily fluids you'll come to know during pregnancy and birth!) Reach your fingers up there, and pull out some mucus. If it can stretch about three inches between your fingers without breaking, ovulation is imminent.

re: Q: Understanding Ovulation?

How do you figure the length of your monthly cycle? I get my period the same day of every month lasting 4.5 days each month.

re: Q: Understanding ovulation?

I am having some trouble trying to pinpoint the actual start of my period to count the days in my cycle. I know it sounds crazy but days 1 and 2 are extremely light- just a little spotting. Then days 3,4,5,6 get gradually heavier until the end.

I purchased the Clear Blue Easy Digital tests and I am worried that I just tested too early- I have used 5 already... or maybe it is not picking up on the hormone? I don 't know. Any advice on either subject?

re: Q: Understanding ovulation?

I am also having some trouble pinpointing the actual start date of my period.  Usually I am 1 or 2 days of light spotting, then a bit heavier for 2-3 days and light spotting at the end also.  Is the first day of my period the day I begin spotting?  Or the day it becomes heavier?  I'm trying to calculate my days of ovulation so we have a better chance for conception and unless I know when to start counting from, I'll never know the dates that would be best.  Any suggestions, comments?

My husband and I have been trying for the past 4 months with no luck.  But I just got an ovulation kit and will try everything you wrote.  If anyone else has tips please let me know!  And pray for us, we really want beautiful, healthy little baby.

re: Q: Understanding ovulation?

Well all I can say to all of you is don't stress!  Do not let trying to get pregant consume you.  I did and I almost didn't get pregnant.  It wasn't until I gave up that I got pregnant.  I think all the planned sex and ovulation tests and everything else just stressed me out so much that I couldn't concieve.  It should be fun.  I reccomend having sex every other day for the whole month.  But if that is too much then at least twice a week which should still do the trick.  Even during your cycle if you can.  Also when you ovulate you kind of feel a little like you are PMSing so have sex then also.  It will happen when it is meant to happen.  If you don't get pregnant after 1 year see a doctor.  If you are 35 or older see a doctor if you don't get pregnant after 6 months.  Good luck!

re: Q: Understanding ovulation?

I believe your period starts the day you start spotting.  dsbuschhorn -- I had been doing the basal temp chart and my temp was all over the place.  I couldn't tell if I was ovulating each month or not, and neither could my Dr.  He eventually put me on 2 clomids a day, instead of one clomid a day.  I come to find out, my ovulation was not during the typical ovulation days.  Mine was a few days later.  After trying on our own, with the drug called clomid, we had no luck.  Then more towards the end of my cycle month, I went to see a fertility specialist.  He did an ultrasound and took a blood sample.  He could tell me, from those two procedures, that I was in the mist of ovulating.  So, he was right, and I believe I am pregnant (took two tests and they were positive).  I am waiting to hear the Dr. say "You're pregnant".  I feel that the clomid and the Dr. taking the ultrasound telling me I was ovulating contributed to success this month.  I hope this helps some of you others out there!  Good Luck!!!!!

re: Q: Understanding ovulation?

I stopped taking Yasmin in November after probably 9 years of consistent BC. My cycles have been varied-one month it will be 25 days, another 28 days. I know it's not a huge variation but those days make all the difference! According to the predictor I should be ovulating right now but the test says that I'm not.I'm so confused by this whole process! I think that I thought it would be easier than this, just have sex and make a baby but it's turning out to be far more complicated. Any advice?

re: Q: Understanding ovulation?

I got an OPK that allows you to test everyday for 20 days since my period is extremely messed up (i have about 4 per year).  My doctor just put me on progesterone & I'm supposed to start it tomorrow.  According to the ovulation charts, I was supposed to ovulate 2 weeks ago, but according to the ovulation test, I actually ovulated yesterday.  I am so confused...I didn't realize that you could ovulate that close to starting your period again... Has anyone else experienced their ovulations being that far off?

re: Q: Understanding ovulation?

Is it normal for a woman NOT to ovulate each month? According to my OPK, I did not ovulate this month. At 41 years old, after years of regular cycles, is "the change" this sudden? Is this the end?

I am reading "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Weschler - it is a great resource for all of the questions above.  it goes into when to TTC, ovulation, variations in cycles... it hits it all!

re: Q: Understanding ovulation?

I see no one has answered many of the questions you guys have.  I'm by no means an expert but there are resources that would be very helpful to all of you.  Read the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility".  It will explain everything you need to know.

Spotting does not count as the start of your cycle.  You start counting on the first day of red flow.  Also, your cycle length starts on the first day of red blood flow (not spotting) and ends the day before the start of your next cycle (again not including spotting).  However many days in between is the length of your cycle.  Beware of mid-cycle spotting.  Many women think this is the start of their next cycle but often it can be implantation bleeding.

Definitely pick up that book!  It will help big time.  Also, if you are TTC, I highly recommend charting your basal body temperature and tracking your cervical mucus. The book will explain in detail.  Good luck!

re: Q: Understanding ovulation?

HI itzel you and i are the same... i usally get mine maybe three times a year maybe.. and they have been known to go on for weeks... But my husband and I have been married for a little while and are now TTC with no success I just saw a doctor yesterday and found out that PCOS sucks for people like us.  We almost never ovulate and so me have to be medicated for a while and then after about 3-9 months of medicine we can start trying.  So email with any questions i understand a little bit more now that i really spoke to my doctor.
