Q: Ovulation predictors?

Posted Tuesday, October 16, 2007 8:03 PM

Q: I’ve been trying to figure out when I’m ovulating so I can get pregnant. Do those ovulation predictor kits really work?

A:
Yes, they do. According to the American Fertility Association to release an egg. And that spells , the best over-the-counter kits measure luteinizing hormone (LH), which can be detected in your pee stream. The presence of LH means that the brain is telling the ovaries j-a-c-k-p-o-t.

These kits aren’t like Twinkies, though -- they won’t last forever. They’re usually only effective for two years, so be sure to look at the expiration date. Prices range from about $14 to $25, depending on brand. Most come with a five-day supply of sticks, to be used in as many days. Your job: Pee on the stick, and wait for a line to appear. If its color is the same as the shade indicated by the instructions, ovulation is imminent (within 24 to 48 hours). If it’s too close to call, retest within the next 12 hours.

If you’re having a hard time with the ovulation predictor kits (is it the exact color on the box?), try a small electronic monitor. It can read the results for you, and tells you even earlier when to expect a surge in LH. The monitor can get expensive, though, (you have to keep buying new sticks to pee on) so weigh the pros and cons before you open your wallet.

re: Q: Ovulation Predictors?

We were trying for 7 months with no luck.  I didn't know if it was stress or that fact that I'm soooo irregular (I have about 4 periods a year).  Also, I was off birth control for about 2 years before even trying to conceive.  I used an ovulation kit and I got pregnant with the first stick that showed I was ovulating!  I'm definately a believer of ovulation kits.  Also, I did my homework and Consumer Reports recommended the Clearblue Easy kit (which I used).  I recommend spending a little more money for the digital kit, it cost me about $35 for 7 sticks.  It's a great feeling when you see a digital smiley face looking at you and giving you the green light.  Happy conceiving!

re: Q: Ovulation Predictors?

I am cheap by nature, and my bbt tracking seemed to show my ovulation late in my cycle at first, so I worried about only having 5-7 sticks, so I went with Answer daily ovulation moniter. These are no muss no fuss dipsticks, 30 sticks for $20.. but I will say they are not very clear, and I still do a lot of guessing. I think if we don't get pregnant this cycle, I may upgrade to the digitals.

re: Q: Ovulation Predictors?

We used Clear Blue Ovulation Kit and it predicted the days on the money, we got off of BC in December 2007 and did the kit on the 10th which is what the kit suggested and got a happy face on the 13th....here we are January 28th and we got a positive preg test on the 25th.  I would definitely recommend the kit.  Good luck!

re: Q: Ovulation Predictors?

I have been using First Response OPK's.  I haven't had luck with them just yet - but hopefully this month.  We are CD18 as we speak.  My girlfriend told me that they got pg the first month using Clear Blue OPK's...so if we are not pg this month, you bet I will be switching to Clear Blue.  I have been right around 26 to 28 days each cycle, but with First Response...I have yet to get a FULL pink double line.  I get one and 3/4 of a dark pink line each cycle.   Good luck to everyone...and wish us luck too!  =)  We sure hope it happens this month!!!

re: Q: Ovulation predictors?

I have a really long cycle - usually 40 days.  Has anyone had any luck with OPK with an unpredictable cycle?  Trying for 3 mos now and it's very hard not knowing when AF is going to show...good luck all!

re: Q: Ovulation predictors?

I'm in the same boat with kellen908.  My cycle is anywhere from 36 ro 47 days.  This month I am trying the First Response Daily Ovulation Test (20 tests).  I'm on my 15th day of testing and still haven't seen a matching line.  It is a little difficult to read since some of the days I get a second line that is lighter than the control line, but I've never had a match.  Has anyone used the full month of tests?  I don't think the tests with only 5-7 tests would work for me, since I have no idea when to start.  Obviously 10 days would be too soon.

re: Q: Ovulation predictors?

I have used those predictors for three months with no positive result.  I am getting really concerned that i don't ovulate.  I am 33 and don't know how soon my doctor will see me to discuss this.

re: Q: Ovulation predictors?

Is it possible to be ovulating and the tests do not pick up on the hormone? I am worried that maybe I tested too early. Also,  I am having trouble counting the days in my period because days 1 and 2 are very very light spotting and then days 3,4,5,6 are full force. Do I still start at Day 1? Please help...

re: Q: Ovulation predictors?

So I used one of these kits for the first time this mornth. I won't know until next week if I'm prego, but I wanted to get some opinions about what I experienced. I've had some issues for a lot of years with irregular periods, heavy periods, and occasional cyst, so on and so forth. According to the ovulation calculator on this site I should have been ovulation last week, with my most fertile days being around the 14th and 15th. So, I started testing on the 11th, and while the test wasn't positive, the "test" line was pretty close to the line on the test that is always there. So I kept testing and by the end of the week the "test" line wasn't even there at all ! To me, this means I was maybe on the tail end of when I actually had ovulated. Like maybe it happened some time between the 7th and 10th ? Any comments on this ??

re: Q: Ovulation predictors?

i've been trying the first response and haven't had luck either. the lines aren't matching up when i should be ovulating. Does this mean i'm not ovulating? even if i have periods?

re: Q: Ovulation predictors?

Has anyone had any luck with the microscope thing that tests your saliva?

re: Q: Ovulation predictors?

I recently purchased ovulation tests from early-pregnancy-tests.com. It was a really good deal -- 40 ovulation tests plus 10 pregnancy tests for $25. The main drawback is that they are not mid-stream tests, you have to pee in a cup (I just bought a pack of Dixie cups) and put the test strip in it that way. The really cool thing is that these tests have enabled me to locate the exact day I start ovulating. With the ovulation tests, I have come to find that I ovulate a few days later than I thought... Since I got so many tests in the package, I didn't feel like I had to limit how many tests I used each day. I tested twice a day to be sure I didn't miss the LH surge. I really recommend them if you are looking to demystify the timing of ovulation. (If you end up ordering them from early-pregnancy-tests.com, make sure you read the comments that past customers have left -- they give good tips for what to look for & expect as far as the results go).

re: Q: Ovulation predictors?

I have not used the kits, instead i track my basal temp every morining. I too have longer periods, i ovulate around day 18. my hubby and i have been trying for 6 mos now, after being on BC pill for 6 yrs straight. this past month i have been on fertility pills due to lack of regualr cycles. For women with longer cycles it means you ovulate later in the cycle (not day 14). the book Taking Charge of your fertility really helps you to understand the process i recomend it to anyone!! good luck

re: Q: Ovulation predictors?

I also ordered from early-pregnancy-tests.com and have been testing all week, sure enough today I got a positive result!!!

re: Q: Ovulation predictors?

I have used the first response test the last 2 months with no luck. My cycles are between 37 and 40 days long. The box only come with 5  tests, I am not sure if I am using them the right week. Maybe I will try the clear blue - I hear they come with more tests......We shall see.

re: Q: Ovulation predictors?

My first month off of BC my cycle lasted 36 days so I bought two different brands of OpK's, Answer which comes with 30 sticks but expire 30 days from the day of opening so I would you use a couple at a time. The other brand was a generic brand  of Rite Aid. I started from day 10 of my cycle, for a week nothing. At day 20 I got a positive result for the Answer brand for 2 days and not for the Rite-Aid. Now I am just waiting and hoping.  For the Answer brand I would get a faint line for the test as the instructions would say could happen, but if the line matched in darkness then it was a positive, it seemed confusing until I got the positive result. good luck. Unfortunately our bodies are not so text book.

re: Q: Ovulation predictors?

I also got the 30 day sticks because my period times ranged from 30-50 days. The test is best taken at 2pm every day. It needs to be around the same time everyday.

re: Q: Ovulation predictors?

I have a fairly regular cycle and used the kits for about a year with no luck.  Then we stopped using the kit and got pregnant the first try.  I gave my extra kits to a friend who was TTC for a few months.  She had long, very irregular cycles and it worked for her the first time.  Good luck!

re: Q: Ovulation predictors?

I tryed several differnt ovulation predictors.. none of them worked. I did some research and found an article by CBS on the ovulation predictors and it basicaly said that only the clear blue easy brand worked.. I got a positive for the 2 month that I used them and I am now 6 1/2 weeks along! The clear blue easy definatly work and they come with a free digital preg test!

re: Q: Ovulation predictors?

I purchased a bunch of OPK strips from babyhopes.com and they seem to be working really well. I can read the lines clearly and they are so much more affordable than buying them at the store. Babyhopes also has free shipping on every order!

re: Q: Ovulation predictors?

I just started using the Ov Tests this month.  I took my first test on Day 9 and it was positive.  I tested a few hours later and it was negative.  I must have caught the tail end.  If I had started testing on Day 10 I would have missed it.  So I guess I ovulate earlier in my cycle than most women.  We TTC everday for five days prior and two days after the positve test.  On the 19th I can take a PG Test.  I am very hopeful.

re: Q: Ovulation predictors?

I just started using the Clear Blue easy ovulation test on Tues. on the 7th and AF stopped on the 2nd. It is saying that I am not ovulating yet but I have cramping like I am or like I am going to start my period!  Don't know what this is about but I hope the kit works. This will be our sixth month trying and first time trying the kit.

re: Q: Ovulation predictors?

these kits only let you know when there is a LH surge so it is possible if you are testing once a day to miss your surge which is why you wouldnt get results.  there is a small chance of the test not picking up the hormone depending onthe sensitivity i would test twice a day if you arent seeing results

re: Q: Ovulation predictors?

I have been through two different sets of 7 day kits (2 different brands) with all negative results. Is it possible to have a regular period and not ovulate? My cycle is 28 days. I am really bummed it didn't work this time...
