Q: Start taking clomid?

Q: What is Clomid, and when should I go on it? What should I expect when on it, and how effective is it?

Dr. Joseph Hill: Clomid, or Clomiphene Citrate, is a medication the blocks the receptor for the female hormone estrogen. This causes the pituitary gland to secrete more follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), which in turn stimulates the ovary to make an egg.

This medication is useful in helping women who do not ovulate regularly to produce an egg every month, but has limited use in helping women who already ovulate become pregnant. If ovulation does not occur using this medication, there are others available that may. If the medication successfully stimulates ovulation but more than four to six cycles go by without a pregnancy, other therapies should be attempted.

Ovulation is successfully stimulated with Clomid in up to 80% of women who do not otherwise ovulate, and 50% of these women become pregnant. Approximately 90% of the pregnancies achieved through Clomid occur within the first four cycles on the medication.

Clomid is associated in some women with mood swings and depression, but both should go away once off the medication.

re: Q: Start Taking Clomid?

Proper monitoring while on Clomid is VERY important.  Clomid can be a wonderful drug to help struggling women conceive.  But...it can contribute to cysts, can delay ovulation, and can thin the uterine lining.  (I personally did not have these issues while on Clomid)   Clomid is a very common drug, but it is a serious drug and unfortunately it is often given out without proper monitoring.

There are other possible side effects not mentioned here.  Clomid can also produce hot flashes and headaches (I had these).  The one good side effect is a more intense orgasm and in some cases, spontaneous orgasm while sleeping!  Some women experience no side effects at all.

I am currently taking 1000 mg of Metformin.  I have been taking this for 4 months with no success.  I think it is time for plan B.  Is this it?  ANd I am so afraid of having multiples..... What is the rate of this happening?

re: Q: Start taking clomid?

I'm currently taking 2000mg of metformin because of PCOS, I miscarried 2 weeks ago, which was a sign of hope for me, I was not able to get pregnant for 2 yrs, when my cycle start again the doctor gave me clomid to take with proper instructions, I hope this works. The rate for (twins) is 10%, which I hope I will be part of that 10%, but in the outcome I will be happy with what ever i am blessed with.

re: Q: Start taking clomid?

I also am taking 2000mg of Metformin and have been taking it since April...with no success.  I had some spotting a few days ago, but that has been my first sign of any kind that anything is going on inside me.  Im hoping that my doctor puts me on Clomid when I go in to have my annual checkup in August because I honestly dont think the Metformin is doing anything for me.  This is soooo frustrating, but its good to know that there are others out there going through the same thing.
