Q: Checking cervical mucus?

Posted Monday, February 04, 2008 10:56 PM

Q:  Should I be checking my cervical mucus?  What am I looking for and how do I do it?

A:
First, put down any food you may be munching on. That said... yes, you should definitely set aside some personal time to check your cervical mucus when you're trying to conceive. It's an effective way to track ovulation and know when you're at your most fertile.

Quick review of the relevance of cervical mucus (or, vaginal discharge): In the days leading up to ovulation, it gets much more slippery, clear, and stretchy than normal. Your mucus will be at its stretchiest on the day you ovulate. It should resemble egg whites, more or less. Right now, your mucus is the perfect consistency for housing sperm -- meaning this is also the best time to hop in the sack and try to conceive.

Checking your own cervical mucus isn't tough. Insert your (thoroughly washed) index finger into your vagina and circle around your cervix (or as close as you can get) to collect the mucus. Remove your finger, and once you can see it press your thumb against it. Then pull your fingers apart, and note if the mucus breaks right away or merely stretches. The more stretchy the mucus, the more fertile you are. (This is where our fertility chart gets really helpful -- evaluating "stretchiness" is a lot easier when you've been consistently recording it and therefore have something to compare it to.) You can also simply wipe the entrance of your vagina with a tissue to get a mucus sample to evaluate, but the finger method generally works better.

re: Q: Checking Cervical Mucus?

I asked this in a post, but will ask it again here.  How does semen affect CM when you're charting?  I'd like to start charting my CM, but wonder if the day or two after having sex, what I'm seeing is "leftover" semen.  Any insight?

re: Q: Checking Cervical Mucus?

I don't know your question has been answered yet, but we do NFP and have been charting CM for years. Semen does make you moist in the same way as CM, but it doesn't stretch the same way and is generally more translucent. If it doesn't stretch between your fingers (or the tissue), it is probably just semenal fluid. Hope that helps. Good luck!

re: Q: Checking cervical mucus?

If you are checking regularly you can totally tell the difference.  The stretchy mucus is very stretchy.  Three of my best friends have gotten pregnant on the first try by checking their mucus.  You can also tell a few days (1-2) after if you got pregnany, you can feel the egg attaching, it feels like mild cramps and if you pay close attention there is usually a touch of spotting.  If you pay close attention you can see/feel all these signs.

re: Q: Checking cervical mucus?

When is a good time to test?  am/pm does it even matter?  Do you start right away or a few days after like OPK's?

re: Q: Checking cervical mucus?

it doesnt matter necessarily am/pm just as long as its your most concentrated urine... usually they'll say am pee is best bc its the most concentrated... but if you can hold it for 4 hours then that is usually concentrated enough to test... so  you could definatly test pm as long as you'd held it for a while(4 hours).

re: Q: Checking cervical mucus?

So would it be better to take a month of checking CM before starting to actually TTC or is it a just go for it kinda thing?

re: Q: Checking cervical mucus?

The cramping from the egg attaching may also be actual ovulation. The egg has to literally burst out of the ovary. About 25% of ovulating women feel it.

Why must urine be concentrated for checking cervical mucus? They don't share the same orifices?

The longer you take checking CM the more familiar you get with your own body. If you're starting to check your CM now you should chart it and look for patterns.

Happy baby-making!

re: Q: Checking cervical mucus?

i am pretty sure the question about "checking" was about taking a pregnancy test, not evaluating cervical mucus.

re: Q: Checking cervical mucus?

We aren't TTC for a while yet, but I've begun charting and using TCoYF as my info source.  If you are even considering charting, get that book from the library.  All of your questions will be answered and there are photos and diagrams about what to look for.  In addition they have charts you can use depending on if you want to TTC or just learn about your cycle.

re: Q: Checking cervical mucus?

After ovulation, if you are pregnant, should you still see any cervical mucus?  I didn't know if it was still present.  If it is does that mean you are not pregnant?  Thanks this is all very new for me!

re: Q: Checking cervical mucus?

I am suppossed to be ovulating tomorrow, and usually when I am about to ovulate my cervical mucus is usually plentiful. I have had absolutely no mucus, I am drier than a desert, which isnt like me. We have been TTC for about 6 months and I just took a test that came back neg. I am not sure what this means, and i am wondering if I really am preg so I am not gonna ovulate, or if something is wrong...what do you think.

re: Q: Checking cervical mucus?

I have been charting my CM for about two weeks, this have been very enlightening for me. I went for my fist gyn appt on the 15th of this month and during the \sono exam we saw the egg sac on the screen - it was amazing! I thought it was something wrong but he said "that's a beuatiful egg" go home and have sex everyday for a week. I always felt when I ovulated, now I know why....that egg sac (actual name is egg cyst) is big enough to feel. The day of that appt, my CM was just like egg whites only yhen I have no idea what it meant - now I do. Sperm can live up to 5 days in our CM, that's great news :)

re: Q: Checking cervical mucus?

I am 38 years old and TTC.  I am currently on my 2nd cycle after having stopped birth control.  AF showed up after 34 days so I am assuming that I did ovulate.  I am currently at day 16 (near ovulation) and have not seen any egg white cervical mucus yet.  I am also concerned that my CM is not suitable for conception and would like to know if this will eventually resolve itslef.  Can I still get pregnant even if my CM is not egg white in consistency?

re: Q: Checking cervical mucus?

After I ovulated this month my cm was so dry (sorry tmi)nothing on tp or underwear but when i checked with my finger in my cervix i saw white thick chunky cm??I never had this before. Then after a few days it was kinda whitish/yellowish creamy lotion like cm.Is this an early sign of pregnancy?BTW it isn't an infection or anything.

re: Q: Checking cervical mucus?

The lotiony CM is considered "creamy" quality cm.  It usually comes before Eggwhite but can come after too.  I'm with what ZEBE912 said, every woman should own the book TAKING CHARGE OF YOUR FERTILITY by Toni Wescheler.  It is truly the bible to a woman's reproductive system.   I can't believe how much i didn't know about my cycle before i read that book!

re: Q: Checking cervical mucus?

I'm new here and trying to learn all I can (2 years off birth control, and NOTHING!), and I just bought that book that so many have recommended...hopefully it's as great as you all say it is!  Knowledge is power, right?

re: Q: Checking cervical mucus?

This subject is new to me, and I don't fully understand it.

Do you still have mucus when you actually conceive, or does it stop? And if you still do, what does it look like?

re: Q: Checking cervical mucus?

Hi! This is my first posting and was curious about whether or not you still have CM after conception too. My DH and I are just starting TTC so I just want to know what to be on the lookout for whenever we get our BFP. Thanks!

Brand New! Need Advice!

Help! I'm so confused. My DH and I have been TTC for about 6 months, but only this last cycle have we really been charting everything. I started testing with an OPK on day 11, and now I'm at day 14, and as of yesterday, it still said I wasn't ovulating. We've been having sex everyday, and for the past 2 days, twice. Is this the wrong thing to do? I just read it's better to do it every other day. Also, I'm not seeing any CM at all. I did a few days ago. The creamy kind. But now nothing. Am I being too anxious? Could ovulation still be coming? Any advice or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

re: Q: Checking cervical mucus?

Intercourse every other day is what my GYN said is most helpful.  Too-frequent intercourse can actually lower the sperm count.

re: Q: Checking cervical mucus?

so....me and my fiance are getting married in August and after tht we are going to start TTC. i just got off my BCP about 2 and a half weeks ago and am experiencing what i believe to be a white thick CM on my underwear. I used to have PCOS but have lost about 15 lbs and have been eating healthy and exercising a couple times a week. is this just vaginal discharge or is it CM?
