Re: Deli Meat

I'm avoiding the typical deli meat; I figure better safe than sorry. However, a lot of the delis around here cook their own turkey breasts each day and slice it, and that is what they use on their sandwiches. I will eat those.

Are you avoiding deli meat? No.

If not, are you heating it up, or eating it cold? Mostly cold.

If you're eating it, do you eat the packaged stuff or straight from the counter? Both. Mainly counter.

What about things like garlic sausage, salami, pepperoni - do/would you eat those? heated or unheated? I like all of it but haven't eaten any. Well pepperoni on pizza and that's it.

I eat any deli meat, fresh cut from a counter, non heated. Maybe once every couple weeks.

I eat everything. The only thing that I avoid is alcohol during pregnancy.

The only thing I avoid in pregnancy is alcohol.  I eat deli meat and don't heat it up.  My OB only suggested heating up rare cuts, which aren't something I like in general anyway.

This! I also avoid medications other than what's on my doctor's recommended list. Periodically I'll heat up deli meats if I'm making something at home, but only if I'm making a hot style sandwich. Oh and in my normal life I would eat steak medium rare, while pregnant I usually order it medium +.

Oh and I do eat packaged, but prefer fresh cut meat from the deli.

Well I guess I should stop eating everything since it seems like everything could hurt my baby.

Seriously though, I'm getting tired of stressing over the things that may harm her. I'm not drinking alcohol or smoking or doing drugs. Cold lunch meat, a hotdog, or bacon and sausage is FINE in moderation. Don't go stuffing your face with it every day but especially the nitrates thing... you'd have to eat A LOT in one sitting for it to cause harm. So tomorrow I'll be eating some pigs in a blanket and sausage dip and go about my day, knowing my daughter is fine.

I'll only eat it at certain places. I won't buy sandwiches that have been pre-made (deli counters, markets, sheetz, etc) but if I know the meat is fresh and hasn't been sitting around all day I'll eat it.

Eating it cold

See first response.

You don't have to get snippy about it. Some people just don't understand the reason some doctors recommend avoiding certain foods.

The reason some avoid deli meats is not because of nitrates - it's because of the risk of listeria. But the risk is very low, and you can get listeria from other things (I feel like spinach might be a recent one?). Moderation has nothing to do with it (a little bit of food with listeria will get you as sick as eating a lot of food with listeria). You just have to know your food sources and use common sense. Don't eat deli meat that's been sitting out all day, for instance.

I wasn't getting snippy. And I meant nitrates in moderation. Not the listeria. I can't answer that which is why I didn't because I rarely eat lunch/deli meat and when I do it's from Firehouse anyway so I don't have to worry about the heated/unheated debate.

I haven't been eating it, but I don't usually eat a lot of it anyway. Occasionally (pre-pregnancy) I'd have a turkey sandwich and I usually go out someplace to get it, so I've been avoiding that. I did have a turkey melt for dinner the other day. But not a huge deal to me because I don't eat a lot of sandwiches to begin with!

Are you avoiding deli meat? - More than I did before getting pregnant

If not, are you heating it up, or eating it cold? - Usually, yes, I've heated it up. I've eaten it cold a few times.

If you're eating it, do you eat the packaged stuff or straight from the counter? - both

What about things like garlic sausage, salami, pepperoni - do/would you eat those? heated or unheated? - I've been eating sausage heated and unheated. I've eaten salami and pepperoni heated on pizza or in subs.

RussianMommy:

I tried making a poll, but it's not letting me click on it

anyways.... I know this is a hot topic on the bump.

Are you avoiding deli meat?  Avoiding, no. And I even eat sushi too (only from a reputable restaurant) on a rare occasion! GASP!

If not, are you heating it up, or eating it cold?

If you're eating it, do you eat the packaged stuff or straight from the counter? I usually stick to the natural no-nitrate prepackaged stuff but I'll sometimes eat it from the counter.

What about things like garlic sausage, salami, pepperoni - do/would you eat those? Yes. heated or unheated? Heated because unheated is just unappetizing.

counter only and not heated for me. I only avoid deli type meats with nitrates including bacon, sausage etc.

All deli meats have nitrates in them. If it's been processed, they've added preservatives.

I haven't changed my eating habits, besides avoiding alcohol, for the pregnancy.

Listeria risk is SO low, i don't know why anyone even gives it a thought. You have a much better chance of getting hit by lightning. Or a car.

DW doesn't like deli meat anyway, but I did unknowingly feed her raw fish last week.  She only likes cooked sushi dishes, even when not preg. Ordered a special roll with cooked shitake mushrooms, seared wagyu beef on top ad eel sauce. Found out yesterday there was a mistake on the menu, it was minced raw tuna inside, not mushrooms.  Oops.

Lurking from 3rd tri here...but I've been eating deli meat, mostly heated but I've also had it cold. Been eating it since first tri. Packaged and straight from the deli. I've also eaten pepperoni cold and cooked. I haven't really worried about it too much! Everything has been just fine with it so far.

1. I have been avoiding deli meat this time around.

2. With my previous pregnancies, I heated up my deli meat.  I was working at the time and there just weren't that many lunch options.  Now that I am home, it's easier to avoid deli meat altogether.

3. I've never bought the prepackaged stuff.  I always get my deli meat from the counter.

4. I haven't had things like pepperoni or sausage unless they're in a cooked meal.

I eat whatever cooked meat I want. Cold, hot, whatever. My OB specifically told me deli meat was fine.

I do not eat deli meat when pregnant unless it is heated.  I have never eaten packaged stuff, only from the counter.

While the risk of Listeria is in fact very low it is a risk nonetheless and unlike many of the things we are told to avoid (alcohol, nitrates, fish high in mercury) eating it in moderation won't help.  You only have to have the bad luck to eat contaminated meat once.  Also, just as an FYI, unlike pretty much any other disease causing bacteria Listeria can grow at refrigerator temperature, it doesn't need to be left sitting out.
