WWYD Re: Playgroup set-up

I'm hosting play group on Wednesday for the first time in quite awhile. I think the last time I had it here, we had a gate blocking off the kitchen. Since then we've gotten the kitchen entirely baby proofed, and I just let Leo roam in there as he pleases.

If you were a mom at a play group, would it bother you that the kitchen was accessible, even if all the cabinets are locked and there is nothing dangerous in there? If they do wander over there, they would be like at most 10 ft away from us, but we wouldn't be able to see them.

If you were me, would you put a gate back up, or no?

eta: Also, would it affect your decision if you knew your child would throw a big fit if he couldn't get somewhere he's normally allowed to go?

I think you should leave your house however it is you normally have it set up.  It should be up to the moms to keep an eye on their kids.

I never block off the kitchen at home, so I wouldn't think anything of it if I went somewhere without the kitchen blocked off. We have locks on all our cabinets, the oven has a lock, and all the doors (pantry and laundry room) are shut...I don't see anything dangerous about that at all!

IMO if the child wanders off, it's the mom's job to go retrieve him and make sure he's not putting himself in danger. You've baby-proofed, but the mom's still need to do their job.

I think it would be fine either way.  I might set up a gate because I think its easier to keep the kids corralled.  I can't imagine any kids throwing a fit over that, they'll be too distracted with toys and other kids.  But if you don't feel like setting it up, I'm sure that would be fine, too.

Don't put it up.  It's baby proofed, and the other moms will come expecting they'll have to supervise their children.  Don't worry about it!

Thanks - I'll leave it down. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't committing a serious breach of play group etiquette :)

I never blocked off the kitchen. All our cabinet doors are locked and it is pretty safe for DS.  Maybe you have have the gate handy and if any of the mothers seem really uncomfortable with it you can put the gate up. But the moms should be watching their kids.
