I have a very low supply in one of my breasts (my left).  I have been doing everything I can to increase my supply, but it is only increasing in my right breast, not my left.  This is causing my right breast to get miserably engorged, thus making me look like a circus freak with one HUGE breast and the other is small.  All I want is to get the other breast up to speed with the right.  Is there anything I can do?

I was just wondering if a tiny bit of leaking and feeling letdown are signs that labor is soon.  My due date for my 2nd baby is today and last night leaked from my "better" breast and today have been feeling letdown tingling. I wasn't thinking about the baby, feeding, hearing a baby cry or anything related at the time. I also have never had pre-baby leaking with either pregnancy.

Thanks!

Is there a way to encourage LO to be a more efficient at eating?  I keep reading about how so many babies are finished in 1-15 mins per side and my DD is still content to nurse for hours at 2 months.

My son seems to latch poorly on just one nipple. It is sore and appears to have even bled. I am treating it with a combo of lanolin and warm salt water a few times a day. It got better when I rested that side over night and I can nurse him there again. But why is there a latch problem only on one side. I am trying to unlatch and make him do it right before letting him nurse, but it still hurts during the latching period. Is this because of previous damage? How will I know he is doing it correctly if it still hurts to latch.

DS will be 7 months this week and he still nurses every 2 hours and will only take one side. He also nurses every 2-3 hours at night. Any suggestions to get him to drink more at one sitting so we can decrease frequenecy of nursing sessions- I LOVE nursing but am really getting worn down by his schedule. Thank you!

My LO eats about every 2 hours, so I'm trying to figure out the best time to pump given that by the time he finishes eating, I only have about an hour and a half to play with him, put him to sleep, and try to pump...and then have milk ready for him to eat again! I only want to pump 1x per day to get a bottle for MH to feed him.

I have the exact same problem (same sides and all). I even offer the left side first when nursing. When I pump I do one side at a time. The R lets down at a lower suction and the L needs 2X or 3X more suction to get a good let down. A lactation consultant at the hospital where our pediatrician said it probably wont change or get better. I've started eating oatmeal lately, I'm hoping it'll change.

I am 5 weeks pp and still dealing with a lot of nipple pain. I breastfed my daughter for 9 months with no issues, so I am frustrated.

It started with badly cracked nipples and engorgement that turned to mastitis, that I treated with antibiotics. I fixed a bad latch with a lactation consultant at 3 weeks and treated thrush with diflucan, nastatin cream and a bunch of other suppliments.

Now I still have small "slices" in both nipples that look like they are filled with a milky film. Is this still the trush and is that most likely causing my pain? I am taking advil to help deal with it but I am anxious to be over this hump. Any other ideas on how to heal my nipples? My son nurses constantly so they never get a break!

How long can you keep breast milk after it has been warmed from the refrigerator but not yet offered to LO? Can you put it back in the fridge? I can only find guidelines for milk that has been thawed from the freezer, not warmed straight from the fridge and I'm not sure if the guidelines are different?

im wondering what the success rate of the supplemental Nursing system is, im still trying to get my daughter to nurse (with battle after battle because of being bottle fed for so long) i was wondering if the SNS will make that process a little easier (since i have like no supply now) that way she thinks shes getting something which in return will help me start producing milk again.

Most women have more milk in one side. You may or may not be able to get the supply up on the low flow side. I recommend pumping only the low flow side a few extra times a day (or when the baby didn't nurse on it well). Don't pump the good breast each time or it will continue to increase production. However, if you need to pump the "stud" for storage purposes, just do it only as often as you need to. If the baby is willing, start and end on the low flow side, using the good flow side in the middle. Comfort sucking can also happen on the lower producing breast. Be so greatful for your super producer and pad up the other side with a "cutlet" or pad so you don't appear so lopsided.

Hi Corky,

Thanks for answering my question.  I'm pretty sure my DS is about to go through his 6 month growth spurt - the crabbiness and extreme sleepiness of the past 2 days mimic the days before his 3 month spurt.  I'm a working mama, so if it is this week, how will my body know that I need to make more milk?  I wouldn't be nursing him more to signal it (except at night)...should I try another pumping session or 2?  I'm just concerned he isn't going to be getting enough - especially since he is on the small side.

Thanks!

I was in an automobile accident last week and need to have a repeat chest  x-ray this week. Can I still nurse afterwards. When I had a CAT scan last week in the ER they used a contrast dye and I was told to dump for a few days.

My one breast is such a slacker!  It was catching up but now it has slacked again.  What can I do?  It is much smaller and I am afraid of it drying up.  LO is 2 1/2 months.  She hates nursing from this side, although I start her off there at first.  I only get 1 oz compared with 3+ oz from the other side.  Thanks for any input!

For the 1st time...LO was not latching right- like her lips looked okay more or less, but I could just feel that it wasn't right.  It wasn't the right kind of sucking. She also pops off the nipple suddenly...not sure what that means. My nipples are feeling slightly abused.

I took her off and tried putting her back on- there were a few times it almost felt right but not 100%.  We have been giving her 1 bottle a day since week #1 - so I find it hard to believe that's the reason. I nursed for over an hr trying to get it right and she finally fell asleep.

Now I am worried this is an issue and now  how do I know she even ate enough...

Interesting question and I think Yes. Oxytocin is the hormone that makes the uterus contract and also makes us let-down our milk. It stands to reason that as you start into labor your breasts would also be responsive to the Oxytocin. Breast stimulation can cause uterine contractions too.. I love the physiology of this. Have a wonderful birth.

I pump and bottle feed expressed milk to my little girl (3 month old) for most of her feedings (4-5 of 7 daily feedings).  We have trouble latching because she has a VERY tight jaw and the pain is too great to breastfeed exclusively (I've seen Wendy twice for this :).  Does my baby lose her ability to "self regulate" with so many bottle feedings over the course of the day?  I try very hard to slow her feedings down so she can be judge of how much to take, but I still feel like she is taking 3.5 to 4 ounces regardless.

Also, when she does breastfeed in the evenings and during her night feeding, she seems to be feeding for an extended period (like 1 to 2 hours sometimes!) -- though I don't feel like she is really working the whole time.  Is she just using me as a human pacifier (I don't mind :) or is she just eating a whole lot (see my "self regulation" question above).

 Thank you, thank you...

Dorian

Well--not really. Babies are different as are mothers. Evidence supports that the range of normal for minutes at the breast is extremely varied. We know that this range is from about 3 minutes on one breast (super producer) to 30 minutes on each side. You DD is a little bit of a "gourmet" and may require this length of time to get the milk she needs. Suggestions: Switch her more often. She may get the breast to let-down milk again with every switch. If you suspect she is not really feeding but needs the mommy contact, learn to wear her in a sling and go for a walk or get the laundry started.

My son is almost 8 weeks old and is doing well so far with breastfeeding and is gaining weight (he's in the 86% for weight).  My question is, should I be waking him to feed during the day so that he's eating at least every 3 hours.  We are still struggling with getting him to sleep longer than 3 - 4 hours at night and don't know if this is a sign he's not calorie loading during the day. Thanks!

Hi~ I am headed back to work next week and have been EBF for the past 6 mos. with little one. For the past two weeks I have been attempting to pump at the same times that I will pump when I go to work. Right now I am only yielding about 2-3 oz. per pump (usually pump 1 hour after LO feeds). I have been eating oatmeal and taking Motherslove to help increase my supply. I am also feeding the little guy a lot at night and early in the morning. Will I start to pump more when I am away from him? I am pumping a total of 4 times during the day (5 am...10 am...5 pm..and 10 pm...).  Is there anything else I should be doing to maintain my supply?

Wow she got those teeth early. Usually babies are a little bit older when the teeth appear and have a bit more ability to understand cause and effect. However, your baby is going to understand quickly that if she bites, she won't be able to nurse. If she bites, take her off and say "No biting". Put her on again and if she bites, take her off again and repeat "No biting". This time don't return to the breast again for a little while. Try to pay attention to when during the feeding she bites. Many babies do this toward the end of the feeding and moms learn to recognize this moment and remove the baby before it happens. Meanwhile give the baby plenty of teething toys so she can meet that need.

I'm EBFing and have recently started pumping daily to build up a small freezer stash of milk.

I'm concerned that I'm only getting 1.5-2.5 oz., total, per pumping session. I BF'd my first daughter as well and would get twice that much milk when I pumped.

My baby has doubled her birth weight (is now almost 15 pounds), has plenty of wet and dirty diapers, seems satisfied after nursing most of the time, and definitely is healthy -- but is it really possible that she's getting enough when I'm pumping so little milk?

And when I leave her, how much milk should she be given at a bottle feeding? It seems like I'll have to pump 2-3 times to get enough for one decent-sized bottle feeding, and I'm kind of discouraged about that. Any suggestions on more efficient pumping, or increasing my supply?

How can I tell the difference between non-nutritive sucking and actual eating for nutrition/hunger?  Before naps and bedtime, my DD will fall asleep at the breast, but keeps lightly and slowly sucking.  Is she really still eating, or just doing it out of habit or reflex?  Sometimes I just pull her off and stick her in the crib, but I often wonder if I should leave her on.  I usually always let her stay on for at least 10 minutes (which is about how long her nursing sessions are during the day).  Thanks for any advice!

My supply is so low at night I've been supplementing with 1 bottle of formula & breastmilk anight per the pediatricians advice. I let my son nurse on both sides before I offer the bottle but after he's been nursing for a while, he'll start squirming and grunting and then eventually pull off screaming and desperatly trying to relatch to eat and will then guzzle down the bottle in minutes. In the morning my son will eat off of one side so I've been pumping for 20 min on the side he eats on. I do this for the first 4 morning sessions (twice on each side) to help increase my supply. I usually only get 1/2 ounce per pumping session and put that in the bottle I give him at night.

Do you have any suggestions on what else I can try to help create more milk for him at night so I don't have to give him formula?

Should I be pumping the side he feeds on AND the side he doesn't feed on in the morning; just pump the side he feeds on; or just pump the side he doesn't feed on?

I have had a milk blister on my right side for 2 weeks. I have tried treatment for thrush (though I don't think it's causing it since it's not helping at all). I posted a couple weeks ago here but got no response. What can I do to get rid of this?

I have 2 questions:

1) I've battled low supply since the beginning b/c DS was in the NICU for a while and couldn't nurse.  After doing everything possible (oatmeal, herbs, pumping after feedings, power pumping, domperidone...), I'm making just enough for him.  Now he's sleeping well and goes one 6 hour stretch (from 11:30-5:30)  without eating.  Do you think it's okay for me to sleep through that time or do I definitely need to get up and pump?  I'm torn b/c I'm back at work and need my sleep, but I don't want to damage my supply.

2).  At work I pump 3 times.  The first time I get 4 oz, the second time about 3, and the third about 2.75.  I've been pouring three bottles with about 3 oz/each.  Should I instead give him what I pump at each time as that is probably closer to what he'd get when nursing or should I continue to make the bottles even amounts?

My son is 6.5 weeks old and exclusively breast fed (either directly or expressed breastmilk in a bottle). He had been eating every 2-2.5 hours during the day, but just recently started going longer during the day between feedings - like every 3-4 hours. For example, this morning he went from 9 am to nearly 1 pm in between feedings, at which point I woke him to give him a breastmilk bottle. My question is if it's normal for babies to begin to go longer stretches between feedings as they get older, or should I be waking him every 3 hours during the day for feedings still (as my ped instructed us to do when he was a newborn). Thanks!

How long should I breastfeed for after LO is born?  I've heard 6 mo, 1 year and 2 years.  Also I would always want my LO to have breast milk but what  if I do get insufficient milk from my breasts what formula is the closest to breast milk?
