5 Thing Thursday

OK, I'm posting a few hours early, but still... most of you will read this on Thursday.

 1) Going anywhere for Thanksgiving, the family coming to you, or just doing a small intimate Thanksgiving this year?

2) If we do a 5 Things: Ladies Edition, what question(s) would you want to ask the collective wives/fiancees/girlfriends of the dad's board?

3) I may have asked this already, but what are your hobbies?  Golf?  Video Games? Amateur taxidermy?

4 and 5 are you.

I will probably post next week's 5 Thing on Wednesday because Thursday will be a busy day for me.  If we come up with good questions for the Ladies Edition, that will probably be a dual 5 Things a week from Thanksgiving.

1) Going anywhere for Thanksgiving, the family coming to you, or just doing a small intimate Thanksgiving this year?

We do the same routine pretty much every Thanksgiving.  All of our immediate families are within an hour drive of us, so we head up to my in-laws for Thanksgiving lunch, eat our turkey then the ladies go to Big Lots (for some reason they are open Thanksgiving day) while the guys watch football and slip into turkey comas.  After that, we head down to my parents house and have Thanksgiving dinner.  The main course is the same, but aside from mashed potatoes and stuffing, the sides are completely different, so it isn't like eating the same meal twice.

2) If we do a 5 Things: Ladies Edition, what question(s) would you want to ask the collective wives/fiancees/girlfriends of the dad's board?

Maybe ask what they enjoy seeing us do, or participate in either during the pregnancy or as fathers.  Maybe what they would like to see us do that we don't do as much as we should. Ask their favorite part of being pregnant/being a new mom???

3) I may have asked this already, but what are your hobbies?  Golf?  Video Games? Amateur taxidermy?

I used to play some video games (mostly Madden), until my XBox 360 got a quarter of the red ring of death and I've had better things to spend money on than replacing a system I frankly won't get to play much any longer.  Aside from that, probably watching sports and going to the zoo.  Yes, going to the zoo is something I consider a hobby because if I go to a new city, I like seeing their zoo or aquarium.  I've actually made day trips and a full vacation once in my single days based on a zoo or aquarium.  Went to Atlanta because while watching Monday Night Football, they showed a whale shark as one of the commercial lead out local shots of Atlanta, and I've always wanted to see one, so I hopped on the computer, found the Georgia Aquarium, did some research and came up with a vacation down in Atlanta based off it.  I've been to at least 8 different zoos and 5 aquariums (not counting Sea World or Animal Kingdom).

 4) On Tuesday I turn 37.  My present?  I get to take my son to get tubes surgically placed in his ear canals to hopefully prevent the ear infections he's been getting for the last year on and off from happening any longer.  Granted, my son's health is a great gift and something that needs to be done, but not how I originally saw my birthday going.  Fortunately, it isn't a highly dangerous procedure and from nearly everyone I've talked to, my son will be back to normal (or close to it) by later that day.

5)  Starting today (Thursday) is one of the busiest weeks of the season for my job.  However, I'm on vacation starting Saturday, so I am thankful I don't have to deal with it.

1) Dinner at the in-laws on Thanksgiving evening. Not sure about my parents. My mom talked about skipping town so we may not even be doing anything with them.

2) What they like to do when they get time to themselves. What they want for Christmas. Favorite thing about being a mom. Favorite thing their SO does for them. Favorite meal to cook when they have time to cook. Favorite meal to cook when they don't have time to cook. Favorite thing to do with their kid(s).

3) Bowling once a week. I try to run a couple times a week (we have a jogging stroller now). Going to parks. Sometimes watch a football game. I read at night before bed.

4) Bowling again: Set my series record with a 690 last night. Would love to get a 700 by the time the season is over. I got new shoes and it's crazy how much of a difference they make.

5) We joined the gym again so we can go swimming. Going tonight and hoping to go a couple times a week.

Bowling used to be something I did a great deal.  I was in a youth league for years and when I went to college, I actually took bowling as a one semester class.  Going into that class, I was probably about a 150 average with a high of 219.  Coming out of that class I was about a 230 average with a high of 289.  I even toyed with the idea of seeing what it would have taken to try to get on the PBA tour, but never really took any action on it, stopped bowling and became incredibly rusty.  I took my wife bowling on our first date and it was pathetic... I was lucky to hit 125.  It had been at least 5 years after the class and my game went to crap.

Driving to my mom's place 5.5 hours north.  It'll be my mom, my 3 siblings, and us.  We're also using it as a chance for me to get back to my alma mater for a hockey game on Wednesday.

2) If we do a 5 Things: Ladies Edition, what question(s) would you want to ask the collective wives/fiancees/girlfriends of the dad's board?

I don't really have anything since I post so much on the other boards... (and have been lurking for nearly a year on them as well)

3) I may have asked this already, but what are your hobbies?  Golf?  Video Games? Amateur taxidermy?

geocaching is probably my biggest hobby.  love golf, racing, running, and still play my ps3.

4) basketball season is here already.  for the first time in 10 years, I didn't have a break between the end of soccer and the start of bball.  I had a referee clinic last week and a game Tuesday already.  Saturday is another varsity game before the t-day break.

5) I've very excited for hockey this year.  Wednesday I'm going to my old stomping grounds for my first game on campus in 3 years.  It will also be L's first.  I already have tickets for Penn State vs. Wisconsin in Feb.  I'm a huge PSU fan in all sports, so I'm excited to watch them all year on tv and to see their first game in Madison.

there are two motivations in sports, which is yours?

1) Going anywhere for Thanksgiving, the family coming to you, or just doing a small intimate Thanksgiving this year?

So after I talked a couple weeks ago about how I've started to really enjoy Thanksgiving because I got to cook a bunch of food, I don't get to do that this year.  We are going to spend Thanksgiving with friends and I won't be cooking anything.  The things we've been asked to bring are right in my wife's wheelhouse.  I will probably bottle up some of my beer to take over.

2) If we do a 5 Things: Ladies Edition, what question(s) would you want to ask the collective wives/fiancees/girlfriends of the dad's board?

None.  Still not sure I understand why we are doing this.

3) I may have asked this already, but what are your hobbies?  Golf?  Video Games? Amateur taxidermy?

I have been homebrewing for almost 4 years.  That is what I spend most of my free money/time on.  I also play video games.  Mostly shooters and RPGs on the Xbox.  In addition to that, reading, board games, hiking, and camping.

4) We had to get a new car this week.  My wife's trusty Honda Accord was no longer trustworthy.  We wanted to get an SUV of some kind and even considered a minivan.  We ended up with a new (to us) Mazda CX-9.  It still gets decent mileage and gives us a 3rd row of seats when we want it.  Otherwise they just fold flat and extend the cargo area.  I think we'll be very happy with this car going forward.

5) Last Friday I got the results back from a beer judge examination I took in the summer.  I passed and got the score necessary to advance as high as possible in the program without taking additional testing.  It was very exciting.

I was about a 170 bowler when I took a college class and I swear I struggled to get a 130. The lanes were horrible and the class was horrible.

230 on normal lanes is really good but I don't think it would cut it in the PBA. The oil patterns they bowl on will drop your average fast. A PBA bowler on lanes I bowl on would probably average in the 250s.

I used to do this a lot.  Every summer we talk about getting back into it, but we never do.

1) Going anywhere for Thanksgiving, the family coming to you, or just doing a small intimate Thanksgiving this year?

We are house sitting for a friend so we will have Thanksgiving there. Friend is very wealthy so they have a huge house that will easily hold my wife's and my families equally.

2) If we do a 5 Things: Ladies Edition, what question(s) would you want to ask the collective wives/fiancees/girlfriends of the dad's board?

What is the one thing you wish your husband had done differently during the pregnancy?

3) I may have asked this already, but what are your hobbies?  Golf?  Video Games? Amateur taxidermy?

I do enjoy some time on my PS3- enjoying it while I can before my daughter is here. I am an avid reader. I love college sports over pro sports any day of the week. I am pretty big into amateur astronomy. I also cook on my smoker at least once a week- I like coming up with my own recipes for rubs and marinades and bbq sauces. I really need a new hobby. Recommendations for a soon to be new Dad?

4)  My wife's family is freakin insane- moreso her sister than anyone else. She is delusional and is incredibly jealous of my wife. It makes holidays hard to deal with because of her.

5)  You guys need to venture into the Parenting board. It is awesome and really has nothing to do with Parenting most of the time.

1) Going to both sets of relatives over the Thanksgiving weekend.

 2) Nothing, my wife and I communicate pretty well.

3) reading, games

4) trying to lose weight, but it is hard with MIL cooking basically pasta and potatoes for dinner.  There has been times that we would have some type of meat then mac and cheese, stuffing, noodles, and potatoes as side dishes.  This doesn't help a guy who turns carbs to sugar quickly.

5) Gave my son another bubble bath.

1) Going anywhere for Thanksgiving, the family coming to you, or just doing a small intimate Thanksgiving this year?

My wife has to work overnight on Thanksgiving, so we're going to do a little Thanksgiving between the two of us on Wednesday, and I'm going to head out to Queens to see some friends on the actual day.

2) If we do a 5 Things: Ladies Edition, what question(s) would you want to ask the collective wives/fiancees/girlfriends of the dad's board?

I dunno.

3) I may have asked this already, but what are your hobbies?  Golf?  Video Games? Amateur taxidermy?

I read a lot, watch football/TV, play some video games.

4) Mom's CT scan results came back.  The tumor is still there after chemo, but the cancer hasn't spread anywhere, which is great news.  They're going to do some low-level radiation therapy that has some pretty good results with her type of cancer.

5) We've started setting up appointments to interview prospective Pediatricians.  One office left my wife on hold for 5 minutes, another wouldn't set an appointment unless I told them exactly which doctor I wanted to meet with.

1) Going anywhere for Thanksgiving, the family coming to you, or just doing a small intimate Thanksgiving this year?

We always go to my wife's family friends house. They are excited to meet the baby. I'm not a huge fan of going there, mainly because I want to lay around, eat and not have to shower on the Holiday....but showering is mandatory according to the wife. I can't wait until my kid gets older and we start our own family tradition, I already told my wife that I want to cook and serve dinner in my own house with my family soon...consider this year our transition year.

2) If we do a 5 Things: Ladies Edition, what question(s) would you want to ask the collective wives/fiancees/girlfriends of the dad's board?

Um, I'm not sure. I definitely don't want to see anything about what to buy DH during the delivery/his birthday or because it's a Tuesday.

3) I may have asked this already, but what are your hobbies?  Golf?  Video Games? Amateur taxidermy?

Hobbies....all I do right now is work, raise the kid and try to sleep whenever possible. But when I do have spare time I love to run, preparing for my next 5K/10K soon, hit the gym, read, cook and I work in entertainment, so TV and film occupies 50 hours a week and I'm always at the theatre and catching up on the DVR.

4. Not a whole lot new this week, still job hunting, kid is growing like a weed and my wife and I are hanging in there.

5. However, we have started co-sleeping with my son. He only sleeps soundly when he is in the bed with both of us on his stomach. Not the ideal situation, but after talking to a ton of parents we learned that a lot of people go outside of the mode and do what's necessary to get through this season. My son will not sleep on his back and won't sleep more than 10 minutes unless we are within reach. Sounds kind of cute, but it's a lot of work and really scary. Fingers crossed this season will pass soon and he will be on to the next phase/milestone.

We were in that position. You sometimes have to do whatever you can to get a couple hours of sleep. And it is scary. We never figured out the solution to keep him in his bed. He'll start out there just fine but will wander back to our bed in the middle of the night. I will admit, it starts having its perks when they get older so we don't worry about it too much. I figure he'll start sleeping in his own bed when he's ready.
