GTKY: Holiday Edition

In honour of US Thanksgiving tomorrow...

1. What holidays does your family celebrate? Only ones pertaining to your religion? Only the holidays that are tradition where you currently live? Something else?

2. Do you serve 'traditional' foods on these holidays or a more modern twist? (Ie switching mashed potatoes for garlic mashed cauliflower/root vegetables)

3. What holiday traditions that you grew up with do you want to pass to your DC?

German and US holidays aren't too different, so basically the only holidays that are different and celebrated are Thanksgiving, Boxing Day, and the 4th of July. We celebrate all of those (well, sort of. Boxing Day we just sit around with his family eating and watching tv...).

2. Do you serve 'traditional' foods on these holidays or a more modern twist? (Ie switching mashed potatoes for garlic mashed cauliflower/root vegetables)

traditional

3. What holiday traditions that you grew up with do you want to pass to your DC?

DH and I are still negotiating xmas since he opened presents xmas eve and we opened on xmas morning. Otherwise just my family's annual xmas reunion (celebrated usually the weekend before or after xmas). I hope that my kids can attend fairly frequently.

A mixed bag of all the fun stuff we can think of. None of use are religious, so we do family traditions and stuff we enjoy.

2. Do you serve 'traditional' foods on these holidays or a more modern twist? (Ie switching mashed potatoes for garlic mashed cauliflower/root vegetables)

Thank you for the amazing idea of mashed root veg and cauliflower --- will def. be trying that! We do a combination for Thanksgiving, but then mostly traditional foods. But we are vegetarian so shake it up no matter what.

3. What holiday traditions that you grew up with do you want to pass to your DC?

Cozy time with family. Candles. Spending time getting ready. Advent calendars. Baking.

Guess I should answer my own GTKY post...

1. We celebrate the Christian holidays observed in the UK (though we are fairly non-religious, ourselves), and usually do something to mark 4th July and Thanksgiving. We have so far, skipped Halloween. Not sure what we'll do about that when DS is older.

2. Currently, I don't host anything so traditional foods are served at ILs. Thanksgiving dinner is made by me, but it's just for us...so we have tried new things. But usually it's traditional (turkey, mashed potatoes, vegetables, gravy) because it's my favourite.

3.  Carol service on Christmas Eve, Stockings for everyone (DH's family stockings are just for kids).

We still celebrate the American holidays.  Our Christmas is on the 25th, not the 24th like here in Denmark.  Halloween is a new holiday in Denmark but it has really become bigger each year in the 4 years we have been there.  The kids get confused though.  They can't remember if they are supposed to ask for candy or bring candy to the neighbors.

2. Do you serve 'traditional' foods on these holidays or a more modern twist? (Ie switching mashed potatoes for garlic mashed cauliflower/root vegetables)

Traditional holiday food.  We eat healthy most of the time, so the holidays are the times to use butter in anything, and to make 3 pies for 2 adults.

3. What holiday traditions that you grew up with do you want to pass to your DC?

I want to make sure that my children grow up understanding the meaning of Christmas and that it is more than just Santa, a tree, and some presents.

I celebrate Christmas Eve now that I live in Spain. I also celebrate Christmas Day but when I was growing up Christmas Eve was the day to get the house ready for Christmas and to do last minute shopping. Here, I have dinner with my In-laws.

On Christmas, I make a huge traditional American brunch and stay at home with DH.

I also celebrate 3 Kings Day now too. We exchange gifts on Xmas but have stockings on 3 kings.

At my house, we eat traditional American food. At my In-laws they just do tapas.

3. What holiday traditions that you grew up with do you want to pass to your DC?

Everything. My parents went crazy with holidays traditions when I was kid. I love the month of December. Baking cookies, visiting Santa, decorating the house, shopping.

We celebrate all the US holidays.  We have not been in Scotland long enough to really understand/celebrate the British holidays...Guy Fawkes night I probably would have enjoyed sans dog...poor Max was petrified at night for a week straight leading up to the holiday...he.hates.fireworks.

2. Do you serve 'traditional' foods on these holidays or a more modern twist? (Ie switching mashed potatoes for garlic mashed cauliflower/root vegetables)

Today for Thanksgiving we are in Edinburgh because DH has a class for work. (been here all week) therefore, we will not be celebrating Thanksgiving...I am missing my family back in the States right now! I usually stick to the traditional stuff anyway

3. What holiday traditions that you grew up with do you want to pass to your DC?

We are not overly religious, but going to Mass on Christmas eve and some of the food recipes that have been passed down through my family I hope to pass to her.
