Signs of potty training?

DS has told me a handful of times--in baby signs-- that he needs a diaper change, and sure enough he has pooped. He's very interested in the toilet, likes flushing it, and this is funny, since I bring him in when I go he's seen me wipe myself so if I sit him on his potty he points at the toilet paper and so I give him like a couple squares and he "wipes" himself. His front side, and then he goes up to his belly and then anything else he sees in front lol.

My point is, kids don't come with instructions so I don't know if these are real signs or just curiosity about something new. And if they are real signs, what do I do next? Are there any good reads out there or potty training? I just feel clueless as to what to do.

What are you doing for potty training?

So funny!  DD does the same thing :)  She's just now started saying "poopie" and low and behold, there's a diaper to change.  I'm treating all of this a pre-potty training stuff though.  She still won't walk independently (cruises just fine, just needs the confidence to let go!), and doesn't seem particularly bothered if she's wet.  I'm debating between getting a potty for Christmas or for her second birthday and starting to sit her on it a couple times a day, most likely whenever I go.

We're not starting with DD yet for several reasons, mostly that she shows no interest. From a mom blog I read (Crappy Pictures), I read great reviews of a book called "oh crap. potty training" from a woman who is apparently a professional potty trainer (who knew there was such a job?!). What I liked about how she describes her method is that there is no one size fits all method, and she makes no promises to have your kid potty trained in 2 days or a week or whatever some of the other books promise. So I bought it and downloaded it (only available as a pdf), but I haven't read it yet.

ETA: Meant to add the link to her website so you can check it out: http://www.jamieglowacki.com/

We have introduced the potty.  She will sit on it, and she likes to go through the motions, like wiping and flushing.  We have successfully caught pee several times (try after waking from naps) and a poop once.  I don't think of it as training, more just getting her comfortable with the potty so it's not shameful or dirty.

I was wondering the same thing. DD will say "poopoo" when she needs to poop and she will also squat/sit on things while she goes but i dont want to push her too soon. Its so hard to know!

Wondering about that myself. DD will scream "Ca Ca!" when she's gone #2, but I'm not sure she's exhibiting any signs of wanting to potty train. On the other hand, since I'm forbidden to sit on the pot by myself, she will always sit on her little stool across from me and stare me down while I'm doing my business. Perhaps she's trying to mimic me? I think that we're going to buy her a little potty and see if she'll just sit on that.

That literally made me laugh out loud. :-) DD has almost no interest when I'm on the pot, but I can totally imagine this scenario!

My doctor said that once she starts waking from her naps dry it shows that she can hold it and is ready to start potty training.

IVF, ICSI, acupuncture, meditation and a miracle... our baby girl is here!

Yeah, it's funny how she won't do it to DH, I guess I'm the special one! ;)

I have no experience, but I'd say that those sound like some pretty good signs to consider starting!  DS's only interest so far is flushing the toilet.  He loves it.  He also likes to put his hands in the toilet...ugh.  Other than that, not much yet.

DS was in the bath the other day and he started "making bubbles" so I grabbed him out and sat him on the toilet.  After that, he pointed at the toilet every time we went into the bathroom.  That weekend, DH and I bought a training potty to keep in the bathroom.  DS likes opening and closing the lid, and sometimes we get him to sit on it.  We figure if we have it around, he'll get more comfortable with it.
