How much memory does a 24 mp picture take up?

The camera I'm about to buy is 24 mp.  Does anyone have any estimate of how much memory a picture file would take up?  My current camera is only 6 mp and each file takes up about 1 megabyte of memory once I convert it from RAW to JPEG.  I really want this camera because it's full frame, but I'm not sure if 24mp would make my computer really slow.  My computer is 3-4 years old and if I buy this camera, I can't buy a new computer for quite a while.  With my old camera, I can download 200 pictures off my camera card in just a couple minutes.  If I get this camera, will it take hours to download pictures?

Also, I know if you shoot in JPEG, you have the option of not using all the megapixels that the camera has.  But if you shoot in RAW, that's not an option, right?  It automatically uses all 24mp?

My main camera creates 22.3MP files. Each RAW is around 25-30MB. I use a 2009 iMac, and it is fine to work on. It is definitely not blazing fast, but it gets the job done. I download my images through Lightroom 4, so it converts to DNG, then creates a set of standard previews for all. That takes somewhere around 15 minutes or so when I download an 8MB card that is full. I use a card reader.

And I think you would need to check into the specs of the camera. My main camera has the option of full-size, medium or small RAW files.

Thanks so much!  That helps.  I think I bought my laptop in the summer of 2009.  It looks like it has 288 GB, but half of those are used up.  I am in the process of deleting a lot of extra pictures that I have on my computer.  So it sounds like maybe this is do-able.  I just may have to be more on the ball about deleting extra pictures.  The camera I'm getting is the Nikon D600.  I'm not sure if I can select different sizes of RAW on it.  I'll have to look into that.

You can get some EHDs (which you should have for backup anyway) and/or upgrade your RAM.
