Food and whine

So, I've struggled with weight my entire life. The only time I've been satisified with my weight is when I eat a low-carb diet (not the crazy bacon-every-meal, no green food version, just sensible meat and veggies and dairy.)

I stayed with that the first month or two of PG. But I quickly developed an aversion to salads (thankfully, I can eat them again - and I do!) and chicken. Well, chicken has turned into all meats but ground beef.

I'm trying to make some meal plans that aren't pasta or pizza, but every other recipe I look at turns my stomach.

Thankfully I was never sick or anything this pregnancy, and I don't have any cravings to speak of. But the aversions to all of my regular foods are driving me INSANE! Anybody have any good advice for trying to research low carb recipes but not see anything with chicken (or eggs. Did I mention that I no longer love eggs either?)

If this is my only pregnancy complaint, though, I realize I'm very, very lucky. I just wish there was a google for pregnant ladies so we could filter out things.

Please don't follow a low carb diet when your pregnant. You will gain weight with pregnancy. You cannot avoid this. I understand wanting to eat healthy and gain a healthy amount of weight but restricting carbs is not good for you or the baby right now. Instead try incorporation complex carbs such as whole grain, fruits vegetables and beans. Your body needs MORE crabs while pregnant. If you cant eat meat, try getting your protein from beans and yogurts. You said you can do ground beef, what about ground turkey? Try making chilis, whole grain pasta with fresh veggies, salads with veggies and nuts, thai lettuce wraps....also if you have so many aversions I would try drinking ensure to be sure you are getting all proper nutrients. Maybe you could research healthy vegetarian recipes.

I'm sure there are low carb websites where you can click / unclick certain ingredients.

Check out www.wholeliving.com and www.eatingwell.com. I use both of these sites for recipe inspiration all the time. I search for an ingredient I want to use and see what comes up. That might help find some things that are healthy and that you can stomach. GL.

We follow the Paleo diet here, which is no grains/sugar (meat, fish, veg, fruit ok, and I eat dairy as well). However, when I'm pg, that just goes out the window. I try really hard, but salads - yuck. Most meat - turns my stomach. Fish - don't even bring it in the house.  Its gotten better since first tri is over, but I too am also finding that carbs, dairy & fruit are the only thing that ever sound appealing to me.

Fortunately, MH is still really committed to our new lifestyle and he has taken over cooking dinner.  I'm taking the same attitude I do with my daughter - this is what is served, so if I'm hungry, I'm going to eat it.  It doesn't make me nauseaous, just usually is unappealing.  But I'm hungry enough and KNOW its good for me. Could you maybe enlist your SO to help out?

Also, hang in there.  Your aversions & cravings will likely continue to keep changing, so don't give up all hope!  Just try to eat sensibly and even if you aren't able to stay as dedicated as you want while pg, I promise you will be feeling back to your old self pp!

I am a diabetic so I have to watch my carbs but the PP is correct that you need more carbs while pregnant.  I stick to 45 carbs with breakfast, 45 with lunch and 60 with dinner (what my doc, nurse and nutritionist recommend).  I am in no way giving you medical advice but it might help to have an idea of a guideline.  What works for me is I really try to make sure that I have a source of protein with every snack and meal.  For snacks I will have peanut butter and crackers, string cheese and crackers (usually whole wheat crackers), yogurt, etc.  Nature Valley Protein chewy bars are AMAZING and are high in protein, fiber and low in carbs.  Plus they have dark chocolate which makes me happy.  There are lots of great cereals that are low in carbs and high in fiber and protein (and dont' taste like twigs and bark).  For lunch my go to during the work week are Healthy Choice or other frozen dinners that are around my carb goal and then I might have some almonds or something with it.  A lot of the cooking/recipe websites list nutritional information so it is pretty easy to make sure you are making good choices for homemade meals.  Good luck and remember that once in awhile life is just a lot more enjoyable if you have a Frosty or cookie.

Try looking for gluten free recipes. If you cut out gluten you end up cutting out a lot of simple carbs and eating more complex carbs.

I don't LC just to lose weight. I do it for energy, to prevent migraines and to just feel better. Your theories about needing carbs are common, but not necessarily factual. You don't need bread or pasta. Plus, I never said anything about not eating veggies and fruits. In fact, I actually mentioned my way of eating including veggies.

When I feel healthiest is when I'm eating lean meats, veggies and dairy. That's a perfectly healthy diet. (And by "diet," i mean "way of eating," so please don't get bent out of shape about the word. It doesn't mean restrictive.)

My husband is good about pitching in with everything, but cooking isn't his forte. He does brown meat, grill burgers and make chili. But if he's put in charge of dinner, I can guarantee we'll be having spaghetti or tacos every night ;) (I'm very fortunate, though. He does any and everything else around the house.)

Totally agree with you MrsR.  To say that your body NEEDS carbs (I presume Kimmie meant grains) is completely untrue.  Just try to hang in there and eat as best you can.  You know how much better you feel when you eat right.

Whao! I think you are getting defensive for no reason.First off, you stated:

"So, I've struggled with weight my entire life. The only time I've been satisified with my weight is when I eat a low-carb diet (not the crazy bacon-every-meal, no green food version, just sensible meat and veggies and dairy.)

This sounds to me as though you are eating a low carb diet to keep your weight in check. You posted asking for advice on what to eat and where to look for recipes considering you have so many aversions to your regular diet. First of all you DO need more carbs when you are pregnant. Every single article and Dr I have ever encountered has stated this. Carbs are where you get your energy. And a lack of them will cause headaches. That's common knowledge. I never said eat bread and pasta. I said make sure you incorporate complex carbs to your diet. And you find them in fruits, veggies whole grain etc. I also gave you some meal recommendations which included food you said you could eat and suggested where to look online for recipes. If i misunderstood the tone to your post, I apologize, but when you clearly state weight issues and low carb diet don't be surprised when people tell you this is not a healthy attitude to have when pregnant. Im  very sorry if you took my response to your question the wrong way. I didn't mean to, nor did I say anything negative or rude. So please to respond to me in a condescending and defensive manor. However, if you arent actually looking for advice or an answer to your question, than why post?

I've eaten mostly spaghetti and tacos this whole pregnancy and it's been working great for me :)

All of what both of you said. I am a newly diagnosed diabetic, and I actually was not put on my "diabetic diet" until I was pregnant. I have been eating less carbs during this pregnancy than pretty much any other time in my life, and while I did lose a considerable amount of weight during my first trimester, my doctors were all actually happy about it. You don't NEED grains, you can get all your carbs from fruits, veggies, nuts, dairy, etc. and be just fine. I do still consume all forms of carbs in moderation, but I personally believe that loading up on carbs throughout pregnancy is NOT a good thing. Even if you are not diabetic, or even gestational diabetic, it still can't be good for your blood sugar to eat a high carb diet. I eat low carb, but very high protein and I occasionally indulge in higher fat choices, and my baby is very healthy, and my blood sugar is steadily great.

As far as low carb diet options, I'm not sure about filtering your search results to avoid chicken, but I've had a lot of luck with great recipes on Pinterest, as well as this site:
http://www.alldayidreamaboutfood.com/

I have other sites I visit, but I'm on my phone right now and can't remember any!
