Raspberry leaf tea

So my grandmother, who lives in Amish country, PA, just texted me about a "tried & true" Amish practice of drinking raspberry tea daily to aid in an easier delivery. A quick bit of googling suggests she meant raspberry leaf tea, specifically.

I'd never heard this one before. Anyone else come across this? Any STMs try it?

Naturally, there isn't any medical evidence to back it up, not to mention the standard warnings that go along with herbal teas. But I do love tea so I thought it sounded fun.

I've heard of it, but I thought you weren't supposed to drink it till 3rd tri? (could be making up that last part)

My MW said it's safe to drink throughout pregnancy.  It helps beef up your uterus.  It's pretty tasty.  You usually have to go to a health food store or Whole Foods to find it.

Yeah, that's what I've read in my quick bout of research, starting around 35 weeks. My g'mother just said daily, but she could have no clue what she's actually talking about (a likely possibility) Stick out tongue

Celestial seasonings? Yes.

Herb grown at home by an Amish old woman? No.

Reason being that it helps with uterine contractions so thats not something you want RIGHT this second but will come in handy later. More natural varieties are more potent and may not be safe so ask your Dr. They have differing views. I drink all kinds of tea all the time and Im fine, my kids are fine... But better safe than sorry.

It causes uterine contractions, so don't use it in early pregnancy.  In 3rd tri, it is supposed to help "tone" the uterus by causing those muscles to practice contracting so that theoretically labor will go smoother/easier.  I tried it in the 3rd tri with my son and it does indeed cause uterine contractions.  One hot summer day while we were living in South Carolina, I drank a ton of raspberry leaf iced tea and found that it brought on strong, hard braxton hicks. I kind of steered clear after that. But, in moderation, I'm sure it wouldn't hurt anything and maybe it would help.

A lot of the information I have read says it's safe to take throughout pregnancy.  A lot of doctors don't want you to take it until after 1st tri just as a precaution.  However, one cup per day isn't going to put you into preterm labor, and there are a ton of benefits.  Talk to you doctor if you're worried about it, but it is one of the safer herbs to take during pregnancy.

I drank 4 cups a day from 3741wks last time in an attempt to start labor with a healthy stronger uterus. I never went into labor and my induction failed. It certainly can't hurt though I would drink it until 3rd tri.

My mother swears by that stuff! She said it really helped her with the L&D. I was her first and the only vag. delivery. The rest (3) were all Cs.

I've also looked it up online and see women drinking it as early as their 2nd tri. But not before. One in particular said she drank it by the gallon. Even took to with her to deliver.

I'm planning to add it to my repertoire of herbals soon.

I've talked to my OB about it and read up on it tons.

It doesn't induce labour, but it has shown to help with uterine tone and therefore harder/shorter labour.

it IS Red Raspberry LEAF tea, and really, if you are drinking the correct stuff, and not just raspberry tea, it doesn't taste like raspberries at all, more just like stewed leaves.

A friend of mine was drinking it THROUGH labour and they asked what it was in L&D and told her to stop because it has been known to hinder active labour when being drunk during the time of labour.
