Birthing Ball

At our childbirth/baby care classes this weekend our teacher brought birthing balls (same as pilates/exercise balls) for all the mommies-to-be to sit on. Let me tell you, I ran right out and bought one after class! It was amazing! It helped my posture, while not irritating my (ahem) hemroids like sitting on a hard chair does, and it also has tons of pre-birth baby-positioning benefits. We practiced all our breathing and relaxation techniques on it and the teacher also mentioned that after baby is born it's awesome for soothing baby- just hold them and bounce on the ball gently. Mine was less than $20 and I think it may be the best pregnancy investment to date. Just had to spread the joy if anyone like me had never heard of it! Do yourself a favor and get one ASAP!

My birthing ball becomes a permanent fixture in the family room during the last months.  When my hips start to ache it feels good to roll them around on the ball.  I've also used mine quite a bit during labor - even at the hospital.

I have one too and I love it! My Hypnobirthing teacher was saying last week that it's great to sit on to encourage breech babies to move head down for anyone who is concerned about that.

Where did you get yours? We have our first class tonight, so I am hoping they can recommend one.  I was actually thinking today how I hear a lot about using a birthing ball but I don't know how/why it would be used... YouTube here I come!

all of this! We got an exercise ball at Marshall's for like...10-15$ and it was soooooo worth it. Plus DS loves to play with it.

I got mine at Target but they sell them on Amazon, and I'm sure a zillion other fitness stores. Our teacher recommended the 75cm anti-burst kind, so that's what I bought.

Yes, yes, yes!  Jack "dropped" really early and for the last few weeks, sitting on the birthing ball was the only way I could comfortably sit upright.  I sat on it a lot during labor and found it really soothing, too.

My doula recommended the type that re weighted. They are a little bit more stable, so less likelihood it will slip out from underneath you if you are particularly clumsy, like I am.  Love the ball, helps my achy back and hips. I sit on this at night and stretch while catching up on TVland.

+1.  I have used a ball as a desk chair for about two years and it makes a HUGE difference.  The first couple of weeks, your back and core is kind of sore because the ball forces you to sit up straight and keep your lower back muscles engaged. I have had almost no lower back pain with this pregnancy and I totally credit the muscles I have built from the ball. It just feels SO much better than a chair.

Bonus - if you a fairly large ball, you will be forced to sit with your knees lower than your hips.  According to the birthing class I took yesterday, this type of posture is really important for keeping your pelvis in prime laboring position.

My sister gave me hers to use from now until Feb. I haven't inflated it yet, but I definitly plan on using it as sitting becomes uncomfortable, and of course during labor.

My back has been killing me at work, so you guys have just about convinced me. How do I know what size to get? Just "large"?

A couple of non-pregnant women in my office sit on exercise balls sometimes to force good posture and work their abs. I'm going to feel a little silly, like I'm being a copy cat... But whatever. I'm totally in the "starting to get uncomfortable" stage lol

I was told "get the biggest one they have on Amazon" if you wear heels.  I am only 5'4 and the biggest one is NOT too big - especially now that I want my hips above my knees when I sit.

I think mine is 75 cm, but you would also be fine with the 65 cm.  We have a smaller ball at home (55 cm size) and I don't find it as comfortable to sit on.
