16 Week Appointment *Twins??*

So, I went to my 16 week appointment today and my doctor had been called out for a delivery so her nurse took care of my appointment this time. She had a really hard time at first finding the heartbeat she caught it a couple of times very faintly on the right hand side, but not good enough to really do a reading. She asked me where they found it last time and I pointed to my lower left hand side and as soon as she moved the doppler she found a very strong heartbeat around 150-160 bpm. Then, it sounded like overlapping heartbeatS... I asked her if that was more than one I was hearing and she looked a little puzzled and told me, "Umm, it sounds like it..." 

Long story short, I have no idea if there is one baby in there or TWO and I'm having a mini panic attack, lol. She moved our a/s up from December 31st to December 21st.  HOLY MOLY- I'm stil hopeful there is only one little bug in there, but I would be thrilled either way. I would think that I would be feeling a lot more movement if there were more than one baby, but I guess stranger things have happened.

I can't believe they didn't do an u/s right away to confirm? Dec. 21 is still a long way away! FWIW, I am not feeling too much movement yet and I'm having twins. Although I see from your siggy you are not a FTM like me. Are there any other signs that point to twins (larger ute, more weight gain, etc.)? 
December 2011: Missed m/c due to trisomy 13 (conceived naturally)... January 2012: DH and I found out we are both cystic fibrosis carriers... April 2012: First IVF with PGD cycle resulted in ectopic pg (May 2012)... August 2012: Second IVF with PGD cycle resulted in BFP... TWIN GIRLS!!! Lilypie First Birthday tickers

I've definitely heard of twins being missed at a 6 or 8 week u/s... can you go get an elective u/s this week to find out? I would not be able to wait two and a half more weeks. Not to mention the fact that if you ARE having twins, you probably need to adjust your diet and exercise ASAP.  With twins, you should gain 15-20 pounds by 20 weeks. Good luck!

That is crazy!  I would be so ridiculously happy to find out almost half way through I was having twins!  I can't believe you have to wait to find out for sure!

Ladies, it's killing me! I just keep thinking there is NO WAY this could happen.... I mean I guess I would rather find out after the morning sickness and all of that has passed. I'm just thinking about all the extra planning I would need to do and the thought of bringing home two babies and not one makes my heart race, I'd be thrilled.

I agree! I would not be able to wait. I don't think I would have left the doctor's office without someone verifying that there is one baby or two! I don't see why the nurse couldn't have called another available doctor in and had that doctor check?! Can you call your doctor to explain the situation and see if you can make another appointment sooner to check?

PS: I would be ecstatic if I found another baby in my belly today.  I want two kids, but I don't know if I want to do this pregnancy thing twice. ;)

While going through the first few months last time I was pregnant, I swore off another pregnancy, but as soon as you hold your baby you're like.....well.... one more would be lovely. :)

Yowza! Now that would be some crazy news to be getting this far in the pregnancy! And I would be going CRAZY if they didn't do an u/s right away! I seriously would have waited until the end of the day for them to do it. You are way too sweet. 

I would definitely take up that friend of yours on their offer. Like, um, tomorrow? lol Good luck! Can't wait to find out!

So crazy! Definitely do the "practice" u/s and let us know what you find out! I was searching for anatomy scans on youtube the other day just out of curiosity for what to expect and I came across a twin surprise video. The couple had heard the heartbeat numerous times and had had an early u/s, but at the a/s there were definitely two in there! So it happens!

There is another possibility, especially in light of your earlier u/s that only showed one baby. The doppler can pick up the blood surging through the umbilical cord in time with the HB. If the umbilical cord was sitting between the heart and the doppler, it could sound like overlaps.

They saw twins for me really easily at 6 weeks, so I would think by 8 they would have a pretty good view of what is in there.  They can 'hide' but I don't think it's that common.

However, one of my babies has an anterior placenta and the other is posterior, so I haven't felt more movement like I would have expected to.  I wouldn't rule out twins just because you haven't felt much movement, especially at 16 weeks.  I hope you find out soon!

Although rare... very possible! I have a friend that did not find out until her A/S at 22 weeks that she was having twins. They only did an 8 week u/s previously and Baby #2 was hiding behind #1, and they only caught one heartbeat on the dopplers, because they only saw 1 on the original U/S...

Exciting! I'm in a similar boat with my measurements being well ahead (and I know I'm not off on my dates) and MW suspecting multiples. We'll find out in January, so I'm a bit jealous that you'll find out this month!

It would be crazy indeed if this were to happen. I will keep you updated on the "practice" u/s, but so far our schedules have not matched up and she's all the way up in KC and I'm down in Southern MO. It's hard to find a good time to get up there, the suspense is killing me. I do keep telling myself it's only one because if I let my mind wander to more than one I start to panic a bit, lol!
