name stealer!

Ok, so before I was pregnant I had told my friend I wanted to name my future son Dillinger. She said it was an awesome name. End of convo. 6 months later Im pregnant and find out I'm having a boy. My friend ends up getting a puppy and names him Dillinger! Wtf? I know its kind of trivial but Wtf? Who does that s? Should I say something? DH doesn't like the name anyway so we wouldn't name him that but it's principle right? I can't help it but I'm seriously pissed.

I ended up saying something on the lines like "didn't tell you that was one of my baby names?" And she just replied "I had no idea. I can change it if it's a big deal."


It's just still really bugging me. Am I being hormonal?
Would any of you say something again to your friend or do you think I should let it go?

I would be upset too, I am sure she didnt do it on purpose because no real friend would. But still it would leave a bitter taste in my mouth. =(

That is SO terrible, I would be pissed too. At this point the dog has the name, so it kind of is what it is. You might say something since obviously that was not cool and it bothers you, but it's sort of water under the bridge now since it can't be changed. Sounds like she made sort of a rude remark back to your comment, just speculating but by that response seems like she did it on purpose?? That's a really tough situation, I'm really sorry that happened to you. How disappointing! Hopefully you come up with another name that you love just as much.

I would let it go.  It's entirely possible your friend completely forgot about the conversation and the name just happened to pop back into her head when she was naming her puppy.

Now, if you had actually had a child named Dillinger prior to her getting the puppy I think your WTF would be completely justifiable.

If it was some common name, I could maybe understand how she forgot. Like she had heard it, liked it, and tucked it away without remembering where she heard it. But Dillinger? That is super unique, there is no mistaking she got it from you.

I would be annoyed too. 
Mommy to three babies here (seven year old twins and my new little guy!), and three babies in Heaven, including Miss Lily Grace who was lost at 20 weeks due to a cord accident.

There is an episode of Sex in the City, season 1, where they go to a "friend's" baby shower and find out that Shayla, Charlotte's secret baby name, was the option for if it was a girl. I think there is a Friend's episode about it too. It must happen a lot of comedy shows use it as a plot line.

I think unique names like that are something you get in your head and forget where it came from. You could still use it if you really wanted to. My sister's pet rabbit was Sven and my 5 year old nephew Sven could not be named anything else.

All this. It's definitely possible that she had it in her head but just couldn't pin point where she had heard it before. Especially as it was 6 months ago and you weren't pregnant yet at the time.

Are you being hormonal?  Probably.  Would it upset me?  D@mn right!  In fact, when my friends and I were younger we had a conversation about favorite baby names and the actual purpose of that conversation was "These are my favorite names, I'm laying claim to them now, don't use them!"  It ended up being very amicable, and we didn't fight over a name once!

Yes. I think Dillinger is awesome. I'm not a traditional kinda of girl so I def don't want to name my kid something 5 other kids in his class will named. Anyways, I don't care about the name itself, it's the principle. It just erks me. I just don't get how people can be so unoriginal and so obvious. Lame.

Started IF Testing- Oct. 2011 CD3 b/w & PCT- Normal
DH SA- 11/17- great! HSG- 11/23- All Clear! DX- Unexplained IF
IUI #1 Scheduled for January 2012 (canx due to annovulatory cycle) Appt with New RE- 1/13/12
DX- Compound Heterozygous MTHR (C677T/A1298C) and possible uterine abnormality
Possible DX of genetic issue (10% abnormal cells-mosacism issue??)
Hysteroscopy- 3/7/12 no uterine abnormality!! Finally all clear to start treatment!
IUI#1 May 2012- 100mg Clomid + Trigger = BFN
IUI#2 June 2012- 100mg Clomid + Bravelle + Trigger + progesterone= BFFN
Moving onto IVF with PGD July 2012- Start stims 7/9 ER 7/20- 8R - 6F

i dont know if this really has much to do with the OP, but...

 I named my dog Ava, and a year later my old college roommate named her daughter that. 

She got a dog and named it Riley, and that's the name i had wanted to name our baby if it was a girl. 

We didnt plan on this, as we never talked about names. We arent super close anymore, so its not like we talk everyday. I just thought it was ironic.

1. She named her dog and not a person, technically, the name can still be used (how many people know her dog AND your child?)

2. You can't claim names

3. Your husband already vetoed the name so you were not going to use it

Seriously!!! just asking about the situation, not opinions. i stated that its BOTHERING me. im not trying to be a *** on PURPOSE, like some chicks go out of there way  to be. The acual name is IRRELEVANT. 

was bound to get some negitive comments. should have known better. what about the old saying "dont have anything nice to say..". i guess some women cant help themselves :)

This is my worst fear!! I live in a small town and it just so happens that there are about 5 or 6 of us all around my age expecting either may or june ( im due in april). I was talking with one of the girls the other day and she said how excited she was to discuss names, I told her (maybe a bit too bluntly) that I wont discuss names with anyone expecting cuz I dont want my name to be used, then I giggled and thought to myslef at least if the names I like slip out they are all due at least a month after me ;) regardless of your name choice I think it was a low blow on your friends behalf...even if the name isnt popular with other people I agree that the principal of it sucks!!! This is one of the reasons I have contemplated sharing the sex but not our name choice until lo arrives...partly cuz I dont want it stolen and partly cuz I dont want the imput of people whos opinion is not one I care about GL with name storming :)
