Placenta Previa: So nervous!

At my mid-pregnancy ultrasound, the tech informed me that the placenta is only 1 cm away from the cervix, which amounts to partial or marginal placenta previa. I was told another ultrasound would need to be performed at 28 weeks to determine whether or not I still have placenta previa and will need a c-section. I'll be 26 weeks tomorrow, so I'll find out for sure in about 2 weeks. In the meantime, I'm just plain worried and anxious over how this could impact me and the baby.

Of course research is power, but it can also scare you! While I realize a lot of times the placenta will shift upward as the uterus grows, I know it doesn't always do that. And if it doesn't, the risk of premature birth is really scary to me, not to mention the real possibility of bed rest.

Has anyone else dealt with placenta previa? Did it clear up before delivery? If you still had it at delivery, did you make it full term and did it have any other impacts on you?

I haven't dealt with placenta previa, but I know what you mean about science scaring the crap out of you.

My baby has a calcium deposit in his heart which is a soft marker for down syndrome. I took the MaterniT21 test, which is supposed to be 99.6% accurate, and had to wait two weeks for my results. As you can imagine, I was a wreck for 2 weeks when the results came back negative.

Just remember that 99% of the things you worry about, never come true. Try not to stress too much!

At my 18 week A/S I had partial previa.  It had resolved at 24 weeks.  They did scare me and gave me all of the risks when the MFM met with me right after the scan.  Then the emergency OB told me it was nothing to worry about (I went in for pre-e symptoms).  When I went back to my regular OB he put me on almost every restriction possible including modified bed rest both for the pre-e and the previa.  Now that it has resolved, some of my restrictions have been lifted.  It was scary to get to that point.  One of the doctors did tell me that it resolved 98% of the time in cases where it is a partial with only 1 cm or less being covered.

Good luck to you.

I was told at 20 weeks that my placenta was 2 cm away from my cervix, so there was a chance it could turn into placenta previa.  However, my doctor told me that 90% of the time it resolves itself.  I went back last week at 24 weeks 2 days and it has moved away from my cervix and is now where it should be.  Good luck to you.  Hope it resolves itself.

Lots of ladies have dealt with it and lots of ladies have it resolve on its own.  Stay away from Dr. Google.  You can't do anything to change things so why stress yourself out?!

I didn't have placenta previa, but I did have a "low lying" placenta. It was about 1.5cm from my cervix. I had an ultrasound 4 weeks later and my placenta was 2.5cm from the cervix. My doctor said that I can now have a vaginal birth.

In most cases, it does move and doesn't cause any concerns. Just try not to worry unless it is still low closer to the time of delivery. Good luck!

If you have a marginal now, I think it's got a great chance of resolving, so I definitely wouldn't worry about it at this point.  I have what my peri is calling a complete (although my OB thinks it's marginal).  It's just a waiting game to see if it moves.  If not, it sounds like the plan would be to have a section somewhere between 36 and 39 weeks (peri said 37 weeks with no bleed, 36 with a bleed; OB said 39 weeks).  My DDs were born at 36 weeks and while they had a few days in the NICU, they had no long-term issues.  Step away from Dr. Google and just take it one day at a time. :-)

I was diagnosed with partial previa at 15 weeks, by 19 it had completely resolved and my placenta is right where it should be. They had me on bed rest for 6 weeks just as a precaution. While it was really annoying, I made it through. Hang in there, it'll all work out.

Yikes... At my U/S at 22 Weeks... My placenta was 2 cm away from my cervix. They didn't seem worried or make it seem like they'd check again...

I am in your exact same situation.  I have marginal and will be going back on 12/20 to see if it has resolved itself.  My doctor said most marginal placenta previa do end up resolving on its own and not to stress.  I hadnt heard anything about it being linked to premature birth, just that if it doesnt resolve itself, then a c section would be needed and natural birth would not be an option.

 Good luck :)

Thanks everyone for the support! I will try not to research anymore for the next two weeks (when I find out for sure), and hopefully it will resolve itself, as it seems it has done in most cases for people that have dealt with it. This pregnancy is just so different than my first, there's a lot more pain and discomfort, and this placenta previa to boot! It's easy to read too much into every low-lying pain that I have. At least I'll know something for sure pretty soon.

I have Placenta Previa (both at 18 then 22.5 weeks). My Dr doesn't seem super worried. If I start bleeding, I bust it to the ER. I get rechcecked again at 32 weeks, and if it remains, there might be restrictions, depending on my "situation". I have a 50% chance of it moving, it was about 1cm away at 22.5 weeks. If not, then I'll have a c-section at 37 weeks, which wouldn't be the end of the world (hey 3 less weeks of uncomfortable pregnancy).

I stressed my entire first pregnancy and now I know that all the worry in the world and all of the internet research isn't going to help the situation. Don't spend too much time on the "What ifs" wait for your Dr to tell you whether to worry or not.

I didn't have placenta previa with DD but I had a low lying placenta and it ended up shifting up. I ended in a c-section anyways but for different reasons. I would try not to stress about it for now and see what happens. A lot of things can change from now until when you deliver. Just be prepared for all scenarios.
