I don't know that the spike is that exact (or even always that evident depending on your consistency of times while temping, illness, etc), but yes... a spike means ovulation.  Then it will stay high.  If you are KU, it will not drop again, otherwise it will drop right before AF.

Good luck!  :)

Not exactly.  First I highly recommend picking up a copy of Taking Charge of Your Fertility.  It's such a great book to help with fertility.

Your temp will be in a lower range pre ovulation then dip slightly on O day then spike up after you O.  Once the temp spikes up you've in your post O or two week wait stage.  If you conceive you'll have another temp spike and it will stay up from that point on.  The book explains it so much better.

I also recommend using fertility friend to chart.  Its very helpful and if you temp properly, it will tell you exactly when you O'd.  I used it with both of my pregnancies and loved knowing it was or wasn't time to test.  GL!

I agree with Shanda.

Although, once you O, it may not be a dramatic "spike". Usually it's a sustained increase of at least 0.3 degrees. My temps always show a slow climb over the course of a few days. I also use OPKs together with charting so I know when to expect O.

Definitely buy the book, sign up for fertility friend and start lurking on the Trying to Get Pregnant board. You will learn a ton! Good luck!

Read about it.  I did it and it was most helpful because after a few months I could see a pattern.  I found that I would ovulate on day 19 then have 11 days before my period started.  DH and I could plan our timing around that.  Although the month we conceived DD I had a very noticeable temp drop on O day and then a spike.  It was very clear.

I also recommend TCOYF -- it really explains it all well. If you're charting online, like on Fertility Friend, you will get an ovulation date/crosshairs after three days of a temperature increase/shift. So, you can't pinpoint ovulation until after it has happened, though after you do it for a few months, you can get a good idea of when you generally ovulate. That's why monitoring CM or using OPKs (or both) work well in conjunction with temping.

I just started temping again this month -- I haven't done it in 2+ years, so I'm trying to get the swing of it again. Good luck with TTC!
