Late Talkers?

Anyone else with late talking kids?  Seemed that our little guy hit all the huge milestones early and quite exceptionally, except for talking.  Just getting started with the whole early intervention thing, ENT exams and hearing test and iIt's all very overwhelming.  It's so hard to not try to wish for a diagnosis or underlying cause of some sort, while not really wanting one, either.  So many have told me that ",,,so and so didn't talk until he was 4! Don't worry.  He'll do it when he's ready,,."  It's getting kind of old.  For the most part, he's a happy little kid (minus the tantrums) and completely understands everything we say.  Just no words.  The signing is going well so far, though. We joke that Little Sister is probably going to talk before he does.   Just needing to hear from some others out there....

Kieran was a late talker but we started therapy around 20 months or so. At first he had only a few words and by 2 he had over 100. He's now 27 months and still doesn't talk as much as some of his friends but I can understand and have a conversation with him for the most part. I've lost track of the total words he says. Definitely do the early intervention and I bet you'll see a huge difference.

Leila hardly talks at all.  But she understands most things we say and will grab my hand and point to what she wants.  I'm giving her a few more months.  Lexi didn't talk until 2 1/2 and then one day she literally just started speaking and never shut up since lol.  If she's not talking by April I will start speech therapy.  I know it's hard not to worry and you think something may be wrong, but sometimes they just simply don't want to talk yet.

We don't have this problem with our LO, but my niece was a very late talker. They never got her diagnosed with anything, but I do believe she's got some learning struggles. She's currently 7 and really struggles with learning to read.  I think the earlier you can find the problem the better.  And honestly, he just might not be much of a talker.  It could be one of those things where some day he's just going to wake up and be speaking in full sentences!  It's not going to hurt to do the early interventions though. That way you'll know if there is anything more that you need to be doing.

Im in the same boat as you. I've been pushing his doctor about it for a long time and finally shes on the same page as me. anyways we started the process of intervention, had a hearing test (came back good, but said to see an ENT for fluid and he had an ear infection), doc gave him meds for the infection, the ent said yes he does have fluid of both ears but she has to see him a few times to see if he needs tubes. (did the fluid cause the infection, or did the infection cause the fluid) also said he could have allergies that are causing the fluid build up, we can try allergy meds to see if it gets better so we can avoid tubes. the process of getting intervention start is long (as im sure you know already) so we havent gotten to start therapy yet (thats the next part we're waiting for) anyways since we started all of this my son has become quite the parrot, started off slowly and is starting to say more and more words everyday or atleast trying to say some. some days hes quite and the next he'll mimic or say 5new words in an hour. anyways just wanted to say i know exactly what your going through and i know all the weird feelings and thoughts on the situation, also try not to stress to much (i know, easier said then done) but everyday or minute it can change and if not your being proactive about it early unlike some people who ignore or wait 4months before school starts. i've learned some kids are lazy, some just want to get it right before even trying, some need a little help.       p.s the evaluators said to us "he's doing so good in all of the other areas that my guess would be that he'll do just fine and fly through therapy very quickly".....and it sounds like you got the same report.     good luck

Oh and they also said we can start thing before therapy happens like. Holding an object up to your mouth and say what it is, that way he can see the way your mouth moves as he sees the object. So maybe you can try that.

I am sorry you are feeling overwhelmed. DS turned 2 in Sept., and the pediatrician recommended that we have him tested because he wasn't saying sentences yet. I ended up canceling the entire process because it was just too overwhelming. Honestly, I don't believe in the entire labeling/milestone thing, and DS is doing just fine now, two months later. Each child grows and develops differently, and when they are this young, it's so difficult to determine if there is something wrong, because they are just learning everything at once!

I hope it gets better for you and you get what you want out of the process.
