Preemies after a year and off formula question?

My girls were 2 months early and coming up on a year. They are behind on solids, meaning they still only eat purees and PUffs.  I still give them 4 bottles of formula a day and Dont plan to stop right at their bday this month.

My question is did you base switching formula to cows milk based on adjusted age?  What age did you switch and what was your experiance?

Thanks!

I would have this conversation with your pediatrician.  I imagine there are many different opinions on this.

Our pedi recommended that we start the transition to WCM soon after my 25 weekers actual birthday.  She was just barely on the charts at 17.5 lbs at a year so I expressed my concern and we settled on 11months adjusted (14.5 actual) as a goal for getting her fully on WCM.  I slowly transitioned her and was planning on waiting until this goal until completely switching over, but sped things up when we also switched from bottles to sippys.

I would also second asking your pedi, since s/he is familiar with your kids' personalized needs.

We were given the go-ahead at 12 mo. actual (31 weeker), but I had enough BM in my freezer to get us to his adjusted b-day.  So we just did a slow wean over the course of about a month around the birthday--we intended it to take about 2 weeks, but I underestimated just how much BM was actually in the freezer and didn't want to waste any.  He was ready to wean at his actual b-day, I think, just had the resources to wait.

We also made a big point to offer different food textures at that point even though he wasn't wild about non-grain, non-puree textures.  OT helped with some of his feeding issues and we fixed them in a few weeks to the point where he's eating with age-appropriate pickiness but is able to eat the food.  If you haven't already looked into EI, I'd suggest calling for a consultation.  GL!

My son's birthday was at the end of May.  We started transitioning to whole milk after his first birthday--it was so much cheaper than formula.  And my son was still on purees and puffs.  My son really did not get more into finger foods until after his adjusted age which was more in August.  As well, he did not start to walk until August as well.  That was fine with us.  He was just going at his pace.  He is 2 years old, and he is now 90 miles an hour.  And he is opinionated on what he likes to eat--chicken, chips, chocolate milk--gotta love that.

We also had feeding issues, and were behind the curve. We started introducing milk at 14 months acutal, 12 months adjusted, and kept a couple of bottles of formula per day until about 15 months actual, 13 adjusted. This was based on how she was doing with solid food. Even starting purees was a struggle, so we kept using the formula until we were comfortable that she was getting enough nutrition from food.

I would talk to your pedi.  They'll be able to give you the best advice.  There are a wide range of experiences here, and they were all dependent on the LO's individual situation.

We still have not switched to milk because of her dietary needs, and for at least the next 3 months there are no plans to start the transition.  We did, however, transition her to Pediasure at 1 year actual (9.5 adjusted) when we started working on transitioning from bottles to sippy cups.  Because she was still getting liquid with a high caloric content, her docs and dietician were ok with doing it early.

My pedi wanted us to switch between 12 months and 13 months old with my older DD. We switched between 12 and 13 months and it was based on the fact that my DD was a good size and was eating well enough. From what I remember we did half formula and half WCM until she tolerated it. We also only warmed it up for about a week or so. Now switching from a bottle to sippy cup too much longer.

I am just starting this process. On her 12 month checkup her pedi said to start the transition. For me this is going very slowly. I do not want to put milk in a bottle so we are doing the sippy and she still does not drink well from it (tried multiple sippy’s and she has been using the sippy for 4 months). Her pedi gave me the ok to switch her formula from the enfacare to toddler and she took this switch very well.

In just the last 2 months she has become much better with table foods. She still eats stage 2 but she can eat almost anything soft we eat now, just takes her a long time to swallow so she gets a stage 2 and then some table food at the same time.

I am just going by her time, no rush when she is ready she will switch. I think we will be closer to 15 months before she is fully self-feeding and on whole milk.

We switched at a year actual (DS was 6 weeks early).  He was 19lbs at the time, but then (and still now) is an eating machine.  Our pedi seemed more concerned about what foods he was eating in doing the switch, than his size.  I think that it's worth a conversation.

My DS was a 30 weeker and we switched right after his 1st birthday. He did great with WCM and loves it. My pedi said he should be getting most of his nutrients/calories from table food.
