smelly stuff...

DH loves smelly stuff...Candles, detergents, fabric softeners, plug ins, those twisty things with the smelly gook inside... I really dislike using that stuff in the house because of the toxicity of those products.

He's generally pretty tolerant of many of my "eco-isms"... but this is something we have difficulty with...

Anybody have any ideas?  I tried making an air freshener with some essential oils, rice and a jar, but your nose has to be in the jar to smell it.  I personally don't care if the house smells like meadow-mango-peachytangerine or not... smelly stuff has never really been my thing... but DH likes it....and I don't want this to be a battle...but don't want too many chemicals in the house.

Are there any favorite natural candles, diffusers, or DIY things that really work?

How are the Lampe Berger things?!?  They say on the website they are non-toxic... is this true?

Its not something completely passive but you could take orange peels, cloves and cinnamon sticks and simmer on your stove in water.

You could do an essential oil reed diffusers or an essential oil candlelight diffuser. I've had good luck with those and they really smell up the house nicely.

I burn soy candles and use a lavender/water spray on the carpets and furniture.

I also burn incense, not sure if that's good or not. But my house always smells great. I usually just burn it in a room we're not in or it's too strong.

There are tons of soy wax candles out there that are safe to burn in the house and smell great. Also look up Mrs. Meyers (their fabric softener smells great) and the Good Home Company for linen sprays, potpourri, etc. They have a scent called Beach Days that I LOVE.

I make a stove-top air freshener that I hard about on Pinterest. Supposedly it's what they make in Williams Sonoma stores. It smells delicious and can be made with all natural ingredients. Just simmer water, vanilla extract, rosemary sprigs and a few slices of lemon and your home will smell beautiful. I re-use the concoction for 2-3 days, just adding water when necessary.
