I work for a police department. And I know this probably won't help, but there are devices that will get that information back for you. We do it all the time when people erase stuff they don't want the cops to see. It isn't really erased. Is that going to help with your problems? No, probably not, but it is there. Hopefully by the time your daughter is old enough for it to matter, you won't need those texts to prove that her father loves and wants her, and you will be in a place where he either means a lot or very little to you. You know what I mean???
