Sling question

I have an ergo, that I like, but I"ve been thinking about getting a sling.

How long can you use a sling?  My 9mo is about 20 lbs.

Are they useful for a hip carry?

I saw some by Slinglings on zuilily- is this a decent brand?  What brand(s) would you guys reccomend?  I don't want one that is too expensive.

I have a Zolowear ring sling that a friend passed on after her daughter was finished using it. It is great! My daughter is 9 months and, so far, I've mostly done the hip hold and chest to chest. I know there are a ton more holds I can do, but I need to watch the DVD again to figure out how to do them.

I love this sling since the fabric holds up quite well and the pattern is very pretty. It also has a large zippered pocked which can fit keys, a diaper, etc.

Slinglings are actually a pouch sling vs. a ring sling which is adjustable.  Slinglings are nice pouches and for a 9 month old would be a good option (pouches aren't great for small babies since you can't adjust them) - they make a quick, compact hip carry.  The tricky part is getting the right size since they aren't adjustable - the slinglings chart is pretty good though (check out their site).  I prefer a ring sling though because it can be adjusted - even something like the clothes you are wearing can make a fit difference.  www.sleepingbaby.net has affordable slings that are great quality (although she may be closed for the holidays at the moment).  And you can totally use a sling as long as kiddo wants to be held - they are really great once kiddo starts walking and wants up and down.

I had a pippalilly pouch sling given to me as a gift, and I love it.  great for hip carries.  My LO is 6 months old, but I expect to use it for a long time.
