is this horrible?

So we have planned to let our nanny today its something that has been building and building and last week when ds screamed bloody murder at the sight of her we decided that we could not wait any longer for ds's sake.

However, I am feeling horrible as it is so close to christmas and I feel like maybe we should wait, but is right after christmas any better? We are trying to make it as nice and painless as possible we are telling her that we had applied to an amazing day school awhile back and they called today to say that they have an opening for the first of year due to a last minute cancellation and that we were next on the list but have to start on the first if we want the spot fyi our nanny is on vacation through jan 7 after today. So we will say that we would still love to use her a sitter in the future and would be happy to give references we are also planning to give her 400 in severance pay as we will say that given the situation we aren't able to give her much notice when really we just don't trust her alone with ds after we tell her that her services are no longer needed but bottom line is the timing too horrible? Thanks for listening I am sick over this and its probably why we have kept her this long even though she is a pretty srummy nanny. Thoughts and advice are greatly appreciated.

Timing aside, if you don't trust her with you're child, it's time to let her go.

I think you're being generous with references and severance. Trust your gut.

Thanks! I really do feel that this is what needs to be done and if someone did call for a reference I wouldn't paint a glowing picture because I don't want someone else to find themselves in the same spot we are in. I think we are just trying to sugarcoat what we tell her today to spare her feelings as much as possible.

Answering as a former career nanny: a scrummy nanny can be fired on the spot. No need for notice.

Severance is a kind gesture.

I would be honest with the reasons for termination. If she want to be a nanny she should have an honest review and the chance to change (in the future) the ways she is sucktastic.

Thanks for your input and my hubbie and I had actually talked about whether we should be honest about why we are letting her go and we both felt that she has absolutely no chance of being a career nanny as really just doesn't get what a nanny should do she's a babysitter and I think that's it disapointing from an early childhood ed major, but seems to be true she a nice person with a bad homelife which she brings the baggage to work a lot and we basically decided that because we can't fathom her making a career out of this we should spare her feelings. Hopefully its the right call appreciate your input greatly.

I wouldn't feel too bad, I'm sure she knows that she isn't putting in her best effort. Some people take nanny jobs because they think its an easy job with little to no work.

Feel good you're putting your child's needs first. And please don't give her references and put another family in this position.

So it actually went well- almost weirdly well.  We told her the story about a spot opening up at this day school that is really tough to get into and she was like you should definitely take it!  We were very surprised and for a second, I was like maybe I was wrong and this is was a sign about how good she is and then I was like naaaaahhhhhh- fallen for it too many times this year.  So we parted ways amicably Smile

I really appreciate the support and it feels great now that we are done.  We will definitely not be giving out references if someone contacts us in regard to her I will be totally honest with them.  When we interviewed her she was not honest with us and we felt tricked I don't want that to happen to anyone else.  Thanks again!
