Food allergy?

We started solids on Saturday. The only thing he's had so far is organic baby oatmeal. He didn't poop the rest of the day on Saturday, Sunday or Monday. Finally, he pooped this afternoon. When DH changed him, he noticed DS' bottom was EXTREMELY red and sore. It's almost blistered and sort of shiny looking. The redness is localized on only one side of his bum where the poo had collected (he was lying on his side). Could this be some sort of allergic reaction to the food? We cloth diaper and he's never had this bad of a reaction before so quickly.

I would think it had something to do with the diaper before the food honestly.

Could it just be that the poo was more acidic this time? FWIW DS got really constipated the first few times we tried oatmeal, but after a week or so he got used to it and his system worked itself out.

Whenever ds had bad diaper rash it was always a reaction to the food he ate.  I'd give ds plenty of naked time and some natural diaper cream. I'd skip the oats and try something else.  What were the ingredients in your oatmeal?

Our LO has pretty much had zero diaper rash problems.  But last week one day I changed her diaper right after I noticed her pooping and her little bottom was pretty red, only on the spots the poop was touching.  We used some Buttpaste for a day or two and it went away just fine.  I think it had to  do with the acidity of the poop and almost gave her a little "burn" more than a rash.

I think it could be something to do with the acidity of the poop. I had just changed him less than an hour before. Guess we'll see how it looks tomorrow.

That doesn't sound like a food allergy to me.  When we first started solids my LO went a couple days without pooping and then had some very different looking poop diapers.  It was just because he had not had anything except breastmilk up until that point and his little digestive system had to get used to it and adjust.  I have read in Baby 411 that it's typical for them to have some changes like that when starting solids.  My LO also had diaper rash for the first time when we started solids.  Once his poop got normal again (new normal compared to before) the diaper rash cleared up.  One thing we do when he has a diaper rash is wipe him with wash cloths instead of wipes.  You might already be doing this since you cloth diaper.  Just try to stay on top of it and glob on tons of whatever paste you're using.

Also, my LO has been drooling and putting everything in his mouth so much that his face has been really red and splotchy at times.  It also has gotten chapped from the winter air.  This happened around the time we started solids too and I was concerned it was the food (along with the different poop).  We called and they said if it was a food allergy it would most likely be all over his body.  So we've had to glob Aquaphor on his face now too.  It's hard when they have several things going on.  Turned out none of ours were related.

It doesn't sound like it to me but I would ask your pediatrician.

Same thing happened to us after peas.  I had to use disposables for several days and desitin and the rash went away.  I think it was just more acidic on her toosh.
