We're in the midst of this exact situation. DH had been unhappy at his job for a while and last spring he put his resume online just to see what would happen. He got contacted by a head hunter and with in a week he had an interview and a job offer. It was very quick and an offer that he just couldn't refuse. He started the job in May and has an hour and 15 min commute one way. We didn't want to move right away because at the time I was still pg and if this job, for whatever reason, didn't work out we didn't want to be completely unstable.
The new job has been going really well so far. He has a pretty flexible schedule, so what he does, is he leaves our house at 6am, gets to work early between 7:15-7:30am, works straight through lunch and leaves at 3:30pm, gets back into town between 4:45-5:00, and picks up L on his way home. We end up getting home around the same time at 5:30. The mornings are shorter, but we still get the same amount of time at home together in the evenings.
There are good things and bad things about the new job. DH has put a lot of miles on our car, but it's a Subaru, so it can take it. Then there's the cost of gas and tolls, since he takes the toll road. He's also become a frequent coustomer of Panera Bread and Tim Hortons for on the go breakfasts (even though I offer to make him something at home!). The drive definitely wears on him sometimes, and he never wants to go for long drives on the weekends now (which I can't really blame him for!) But his salary is a good bit higher than it was, his company benefits cost less for families, and he's much more fulfilled in his job than he was. He tells me all the time about all the new skills he's learning and how he's expanding on the things he already knew.
Our current plan is to be moved by this time next year. If we were still renting, I probably would have considered moving sooner. I feel like there's so much less to do when you rent! Since we own, though, we need to fix up our house a bit and sell it before we can move. I get exausted just thinking about it!
Sorry this got so long!! I just wanted to give you a sence of how we're dealing with a long commute.
