Icky Medicine

I sat with my dd this morning to give her the 1st bottle of the day.  Along with it comes her regular medicine, and 2 doses of antibiotics (a 10 day supply).  She doesn't much like her regular medicine, but it's a small amount and so we usually do it quick and dirty and she barely notices now.  But add the antibiotics in large (8ml total) quantities and she is not a happy camper.  This is now the 3rd time giving them to her and she is wise to my ways.  I literally had to sit with her, pin her arms down and squeeze her cheeks a bit to squirt the antibiotics in little by little :(  We got it done.  I gave her a special mum mum cookie afterwards and she was back to her cheery self.  I feel like a momma monster now.  So, ladies, I have 8.5 days ahead of me with this and I wonder, any useful tips to giving the "icky medicine" to infants or is this our lot for the next week?  I know that with pills, etc, my mom used to crush em and put them in a spoonful of honey if they were particularly hard to take...but I'm at a loss here.  I don't want her to have a negative experience but I know this is important for her.

I usually put a little on DD2's mouth, she tastes it, gets upset, starts to howl, and I shove the the dropper into the back corner of her mouth and push the plunger. It may take several tries, but when it is the back like that, their instinct is to swallow rather than gag. If you try to do it towards the front, they push it out with their tongues. 8.5 mL is a lot, so you will have to do that several times. No honey before one, and if it tastes nasty, I wouldn't put it in her formula, because then she might not drink it all. Definitely try to aim for the cheek, near the back, and she should instinctively swallow. I don't mean in the throat, but towards the back in the cheek. Hope that makes sense.

My best advice is hang in there! My DD was on amoxicillin for an ear ache and hated the stuff! I dreaded having to fight her to take it but we got through it. I agree with pp get as far back as you can and work fast. Easier said than done now that we have LOs that can grab. Good luck, hope the 8.5 days go by quick!

Yeah!! It went better tonight.  I started with her "fav" medicine (the one she's been having every night for 6 months) and then the cherry flavour, and then the one she least likes.  The last one I had to force in, but the other two she took fairly good.  I think that momma's on to something.  If all I have to do is fight through half the volume of medicine, we're good!  She wouldn't finish her bottle though after that last one.  So, tomorrow morning I will wait to give her that last one until the bottle is almost completely done.   I'm now concerned that she's going to wake up hungry instead of sttn..but at least she has her medicine ;)
