Transitioning: From Nanny to Daycare :(

I am hoping some of you may help me.  This is the last week we will have our nanny and although it saddens me, I know it is time for my daughter to be around other children. She will be 21 months when she starts Daycare. I am just wondering, if any of you made this transition, did you take your LO in a week or so before they were going to start to familiarize them with the place, or did you just drop them off cold turkey?

It makes me nervous having to trust a whole new set of people with her, but I know it's for the best. I am also not looking forward to my daughter getting sick :(

Any advice helps,

Thanks.

Trust the daycare on this.  They'll know what has worked in the past.

Mine suggested half days for the first day or two, but then said it's usually best if the kids just kind of jump in.  That worked well for DD, who was 2 1/2.

When we switched daycares for SS at about 26 months, our MIL took him in for an hour or so for a day before our first week. They played, hung out, talked with all the teachers, let him get familiar with the layout and rooms, meet some kids.

But other than that, pretty much cold turkey.  He did ok, it took him a week or so to really adjust, but we tried to keep it positive. And remind him of all the new toys he could play with, new books, and new friends, and how exciting and fun it was. He's one of those kids that really would follow our lead... ya know?

I understand how sad it can be to leave one place, and nerve-wracking to see how the new place does. But the staff at daycares are pros at this, it's what they do. Each kid was new at some point.

We moved DS1 from an in-home provider to a daycare center right at 2 years old. I dropped him off for 2 short days as a trial run first. First day went fine, but the second day (when he knew mommy was going to leave) that he threw a fit. I will honestly say that he cried every time I dropped him off for almost the first 2 weeks...with the crying gradually getting less and less every day. Now, he loves daycare and I cant seem to get him to want to leave! He loves his teachers and so do I. I was also nervous about the transition from crib napping to mat napping, but he did great!

We transitioned DS when he was 19 months. Our director recommended that we do shorter days for the first couple of days. It took a could of weeks before drop offs didn't involve crying. Now he loves it.

LO's day care requires the children to meet their teachers twice before being left alone for the day. Some of the preschools in the area have a transition period where to go half day for a week. ( they are in education than DC, but I can't afford a week of half days, plus school vacations)

LO's only had one 'sick' instance from DC. Also, better now than in primary school where they can miss tests or field trips!
