When to ask for pumping time?

I'm lucky enough to be a sahm for a while now but I'm ready to go back to work. I'm looking at changing careers and wondering when is an appropriate time to talk to your employer about being a breast feeding mom and having to pump during the work day. Who do you talk to your boss, HR person? Does anyone have experience on how other employees feel about the new employee getting extra "breaks" to pump?

I think it is a conversation you would have with HR after you accept a position. Once you have accepted it then I would ask what their accomodations are for nrusing mothers who need to pump, that way they can tell you if they offer a nursing room and what they have done in the past. Ont thing to remember is that they are not required to pay you for your pumping breaks so that would be something you may want to address.

I pump 3xs a day and from set up to clean up it is 30 min each time. One is during my lunch but during the other two I actually take my laptop and work for at least 1/2 of it since i am entitled to 2- 15 min breaks anyways( i am pumping right now actually!).  Some employers may require you to come in early or leave late to make up for the time you are pumping.

I switched jobs when DS was 8 months old.  I waited until I had accepted the job offer, then emailed the HR person to let them know I planned to pump during my lunch break and would need a place to do so. They gave me a key to an empty ooffice and I had absolutely no problems.  Depending on how much time you will need per day, you may need to plan to shorten your lunch break or extend your day.  The law says employers must allow time to pump, but it does not have to be paid time.  Talk to HR about it to determine their expectations.

I asked the HR person after I concluded the technical interviews.  I wanted to know what the accomodations were at each company I interviewed with because that would play a part in considering the offers I received.  I mentioned it to my boss after I had started working.  I work in a male-dominated field though, so I feel like my boss was a bit uncomfortable talking about it.  I just let him know what I needed and he was fine with it.  It didn't affect my work negatively and I'm not sure that the other employees knew what I was up to when I wasn't at my desk.
