First overnight trip/car trip - any tips

Hi ladies,

We will be traveling to my ILs for Christmas next week for 2 nights - they live 3hrs by car.  DS will be 6.5 wks then and this is our first car trip and overnight trip. It's a small gathering, just 6ppl at ILs and 2 extra ppl for Christmas lunch.

We plan to bring our PnP (for our bedroom) and RnP (for naps in living room), and a play mat.   I know we'll have to bring lots of burp cloths, clothing changes, diapering supplies, swaddle blankets, MBF pillow.

I know most (if not all) of you have done car trips and overnight trips - what other things we need to bring?  I'm sure I'll forget something important so it'll be nice if I can get a list of must-haves from you so I can check the list off as we pack.  My ILs live in a very rural area so it's not that easy to go out and buy baby supplies if we need some.

TIA!

It sounds like your list is off to a great start :) I know for me I found it helpful to keep things as close to like it is at home as possible.  Are there any sound's your LO is used to that you might not have at your IL's?  Does baby M have a sound machine?  Not everyone uses one but if you do you might want it with.  Hope you have a fun time & that someone else is taking care of all the cooking so you get a break!

TTC on our own for many years finally moved on to IF treatment, diagnosis for me, ovaries with PCO appearance, hypothyroidism, DH MFI, IUI 1-3 BFN moved on to IVF, IVF #1 BFP! Sound machine, swaddling blankets, pump/bottles if you are using them.

We forgot swaddles and sleep sheep this weekend and I had to race to target at closing time to rectify the situation. It was ugly.

A good friend of mine forgot her pump power cord when visiting us... Not fun.

Most things you can replace if necessary, but I find things are fine as long as I pack from a detailed list. Winging it doesn't work out.

Have fun!

After a loss and 4 IUIs, a surprise BFP while on rest cycle due to cysts and "supercharged ovaries" brought us baby M.

We don't live near either family so we travel a lot with DS. Try to have your ILs get as much as possible so you don't have to pack it. They can get diaper changing supplies, burp cloths... lots of the small things. Make a packing list and go by it. Mine is separated by category - sleep, feeding, clothes, play, etc. I made it over the course of a day or two and added everything I used with DS as I used it. Have fun!

Thanks for the replies so far!  Keep them coming!

* sound machine *  that may be a problem!  Originally we bought sleep sheep, but then I returned it b/c we have a fairly noisy humidifier in our room. I thought it's silly to have a sleep sheep when we already get a drone from the humidifier.  So, we don't have a sound machine!!!  Do you think it'll be the end of us if we don't have one at ILs?  It is really quiet where they live (rural), yet I don't want to spend $30/40 for sleep sheep if we're only using it for 2 nights!

We are driving 9hrs with Baby C on Saturday for the holidays and I did what the pp mentioned about a list divided by categories. I've been working on it for the past couple days and making changes/adding things I see myself/lil man using during those times sleep, play, eating, etc.  Can you get apps on your cell phone? There are lots of free white noise ones that you can get. That's what we use and it works great.

Good luck on your trip!

Our sound machine is invaluable.  We use it in addition to whatever fan or humidifier is on, but for the times of year when neither of those things are needed, I think you'll find that a sound machine is very benificial.

Sound machine....whether or not its a waste to buy one for the trip depends on LO and you/DH ability to go with the flow, really. Its only two nights. If it were me I wouldn't spend the money. A 6.5 week old baby is still unpredictable - LO might not sleep even if you DO have a sound machine.

Do you have a smartphone? I've heard there are white noise apps you can download. you could plug your phone into electric outlet for the night & let it play until LO falls asleep.

Or, something that in-laws would probably have is a radio - turn it on in between stations so that it's just static.

How big is the humidifier...maybe just take it with?

Good luck with your trip!

Hi pb.  FX for your first trip!  I know it's very nerve wracking.  Our first trip went fantastic, but we vastly over-prepared.  I took her swing and her jumper because those are her two favorite things in the world.  My parents ended up getting E a swing and an exersaucer to keep at their house so we didn't have to travel with those.  The PNP did great for overnight (it's what she sleeps in anyhow) and the swing worked for naps (it's what she naps in at home.)  Try to keep things as close to home as possible.  Like PP said, a radio between stations works great as white noise.  Another thing we did, was for our short trip we traveled in the morning when she usually has her long nap.  When we did a 6 hour trip, we left at her bedtime so she slept the whole way there.  Make sure you think about what time you are going to travel.  Make sure you have plenty of snacks and bottled water for you and YH.  If LO is sleeping, don't stop the car!  GL, I hope you have a fantastic drama-free trip.

I really appreciate all your advice and suggestions!  DH & I are probably the last persons on earth who don't have smartphones, so white noise apps won't be useful!  But I'm sure we can find a radio at ILs and just tune in to static.  OTOH, we may still get a white noise machine, but not sure if I have time to do that before we leave.

FWIW, last night we turned off our humidifier just to see.  Baby M did fine during the first half of the night, but got very fussy after MOTN feed.  I think it was b/c of gas (we weren't able to get him to burp) rather than the lack of white noise. He day time naps are in the living room and I don't have white noise on anyway.

He is usually most calm in the mornings so we'll try to do the car trip then.  But since majority of the trip is on the Mass turnpike (with few exits and few service areas), we may have to stop before he wakes up/gets hungry just to feed him, or else we may be stuck with 30 miles of nonstop screaming!

We did a trip to my parents for Thanksgiving when she was 3 weeks old, and it went great! Are you pumping at all? If so, you might want to bring all of that gear, in case you need it.

Sounds like you've got a good list. Just make sure you have more diapers and wipes than you think you need, since it won't be easy for you to go out for more. GL!!
