Update on my speech-delayed 18m/o

Everyone here was so lovely and welcoming, I just wanted to check back and let you know I had both of my boys evaluated. They are both speech delayed and I was worried about some other stuff with my younger one. The 18 month old doesn't say any words at all, doesn't point, doesn't wave, doesn't ask for/demand things. The big boy (2.5) passed all areas with a delay in speech, but not one they feel needs intervention. The little one passed everything except communication. Based on what the evaluator saw and what the pedi checked, it's his hearing. Now that the idea has been put in my head, I feel silly for not noticing sooner. So we're seeing an ENT in a few weeks and we'll see from there what needs to be done. I feel awful that he has gone this long without hearing while we made no effort to help him, but right now I'm focusing on the positive, which is that we are moving in the right direction. We are keeping our fingers crossed for an easy fix, but we'll do whatever we have to do to help him.

So thank you, thank you, thank you for nudging me to make the call. Who knows how long I would have waited and how much time we would have wasted.

So glad things worked out and you can do what needs to be done!

Don't beat yourself up over the hearing thing. Like you said you're on the right track now! One of my nephews is seven and just dx'd with severe hearing loss on one side during a routine school check -- it was probably congenital with a gradual loss over time, but he compensated so well for it that no one even knew it was a problem. These things can be subtle, that's why we go to the pros. :)

Wonderful news!

Thanks for the update. Don't dwell on "missing" the hearing piece, it can be subtle to see day to day.

Don't beat yourself up. You did the right thing by getting your children evaluated. 18 month olds (typically developing or otherwise) are notorious for not listening to parents so it's an easy thing to miss especially at that young an age.

Keep us posted on how you make out with the ENT.

Thanks so much for the update!  I was hoping you would follow up.  I know it is hard when no one else seems to see what you see (or be concerned about it).  Has your son had an official hearing test or are you going to the ENT first?  KUP on how the apt goes! As I said originally, the difference for DS was significant (in terms of receptive language).

Thanks for the update. We like getting them :)

I agree with others about beating yourself up. My son had a lot of fluid in his ears that never amounted to ear infections. It wasn't consisitantly there in the 3-4 hearing tests we had. We didn't find out about it until he had an MRI for other reasons!!

I felt like total crap even though he already has hearing loss and wears hearing aids. He was missing out on an additional 10 decibels with that sludge in his ears.

Let us know how the hearing tests go. A lot of kids get tubes so I am sure you will find a bunch of advice if that is the route you have to go.....

We are going through the ENT for testing. They said we could also go through the school system, but they're on break right now and it would have been faster to do the testing through the ENT.

I don't know a lot about hearing loss, and we're assuming it will be that he just needs tubes. We're hoping. His pedi seemed a little concerned because there's no visible fluid or swelling, so I guess we'll see how it goes.

Thanks again, everyone. It's so nice to have a place to come where you're all so supportive. I'll let you know what the ENT says when we go.

Our pedi didn't see the fluid either and was surprised at the finding. The ENT has stronger/better tools to see stuff like that so it is very possible your pedi just doesn't have the right tools.
