Pregnant: Calling moms of 2+

Just found out Im about 4 1/2 weeks pregnant. I have a 2 year old that weighs about 31 lbs. He is pretty self sufficient, i very rarely have to lift him...maybe into crib and car seat (he is still in the middle of car)  Ive read that its Ok b/c your body is used to this type of lifting and to just limit it (see Dr mid Jan) Im making myself nervous about this....Im just picking brains here....anyone that has already experienced this do you have any advice?

I dont want to take away from my Toddler by doing less but dont want to hurt baby either.

Thanks!

I'm 21 weeks and lifting my son has been no problem until this week. My lower back has been hurting a lot. As long as you lift using your knees, you and baby should be fine. Hope this helps

From what I've heard, it's ok to pick up your toddler. However I had a scare last week where I picked DS up while I was ordering my lunch and he was fighting me a bit, I got a little crampy, got home and started spotting. All is good. But was enough to scare me into avoiding picking him up now if I can. He's pretty independent anyways, so he doesn't mind.

"heaving lifting" (which is what lifting your toddler is considered) is primarily a concern later in your pregnancy, not in first tri unless there you had restrictions/issues during your last pregnancy.  Congrats and good luck.

DS was just under 2 when I found out I was pg (he weighed around 27 lbs).  I continued lifting him as much as before throughout my entire pregnancy and it was never an issue. He was pretty self sufficient so I didn't have to do a lot anyhow.

Towards the end I limited the amount of lifting and carrying only because I wanted him to get used to me not doing it as much knowing that my hands would be full with a newborn.

Congrats!!!

Don't worry... You are fine to continue normal activity lifting, working out, etc. unless you have complications and your doctor tells you otherwise or it becomes painful. I am a few weeks away from #3 in 4 years and lift my 2 year old (30lbs) all the time and sometimes my 3 year old (32lbs), and sometimes both at the same time - no problem. The less you carry LO#1 the more independent they become which is good because then they won't be as upset (maybe) when you have a newborn and are unable to pick them up. To this day, not much has changed with the way I interact with my other kids. Some days I'm more tired so we aren't as active, but still doing lots of arts and crafts, reading books, etc. HTH

A few things that might make your life a little easier:

  • transition into a toddler bed -- if he's ready, it'll be a fight but well worth
  • move the car seat to safe but more comfortable position for you to reach
  • teach your son to walk to the car/home/store/wherever so you don't have to carry him
  • teach him to get in and out of the car on his own and to get in his car seat
  • start potty training -- again, if he's ready

I carried my 27lb daughter up the stairs daily until I delivered. And returned to my normal routine the minute I was home. It's not ideal or recommended but it's what I had to do and I was perfectly fine. Do what is comfortable for you and what works for you.

I carry my 31 lb, 2.5 yo all the time. I still go to the gym and lift weights, and generally 30 lbs is my lowest amount. Really, if you're used to lifting then you can keep doing what you have been.

DD1 was 11 months old and 19ish lbs when I found out I was pregnant with #2. I lifted/carried her throughout my entire pregnancy. She weighed around 22-23lbs by the end of it, if I remember right. Doctor told me even if she weighed 30lbs I was okay to keep lifting her because it was something my body was used to.

It gets hard towards the end, but doable. I tried to get someone to help whenever possible, but with a toddler there are just times where you need to pick them up. Go slow and you'll be ok.

Agree with everyone else - as long as it's not painful for you (or your doctor restricts your lifting for any reason), it's fine.  I was able to carry DD until I was maybe 30 weeks and then it was too painful due to SPD.

One other thing to think about is that it's good to get your toddler used to you not being able to lift him, or for you to figure out how to manage while having a baby in your arms.  While I was pregnant we moved from an apartment with no stairs into one on the second floor that has stairs to the third floor.  The last couple months of my pregnancy we practiced having DD going up and down the stairs so that she knew how to do it safely if I couldn't carry her.

I was fine lifting my 35 pound DS, but I wasn't high risk or anything. Listen to you doc and you should be fine.
