gagging on food

Hi all,

My LO is a pro with purees and even things like Mum Mum's, mashed potatoes, pieces of banana, etc.

So I figured I would move up a stage in baby food to see. It has little pieces of potatoes and carrots in there. He did mostly fine, but a couple times he did gag/spit up. He still wanted more right after!

Is this a normal reaction to learning how to eat these little pieces, or is he maybe not ready? Like I said, he ended up eating it all and wanted more even after that little bit of gagging.

He does chew, so maybe it was just a gag reflex rather than not being able to handle it?

Thanks :)

Is it the stage 3 foods?  We had the same problem, she gagged or she spit out all of the "chunks".   Our ped said most babies do not like and gag on the stage 3s, so to skip them.  Then DD started refusing purées (and letting me feed her), so we moved to table food instead.

Yep, it was the stage 3's (says 8 months+ on jar).

I just found it odd he kept wanting more! But yes, I think I will end up saving the jars for the diaper and just feed him our food, if appropriate. He does eat soup and pasta and foods like that when we eat them, so found it odd he gagged/puked with this jar food. Thanks!

Gagging is scary but completely normal and the babys way of learning to manipulate food in their mouth.  You could definitely try offering more table foods.  My LO eats purees af daycare, but mainly tabld food at home.  She still gags, but with more experience she is getting better.

Gagging = Totally normal.  It's just part of the process of baby learning how to break down foods and move the right amount to the back.  Scary maybe for mom, but totally part of the process.

Thanks ladies! I have such a fear of choking ever since I have seen my sister choke when he was younger (she was fine after). But it still freaked me out. I just know I have to put that fear behind me and not not let him explore different textures because of that.

Thanks so much, glad to know it is normal :)
